COA Executive Director’s Comments Hello, everyone! It is hard to believe that we are already to the month of August. The past five months sure have been challenging. I hope that you are all doing well and have stayed safe and healthy throughout the pandemic. Nothing has changed regarding our closure since last month for us here at the COA. All county facilities remain closed to the public as we wait for clearance that it is safe to
open the doors. We are conducting as many services as possible via the telephone, and if absolutely needed, by appointment. Many of our staff continue to work from home, when they are able to do so, to keep the number of people in the building to a minimum.
We are continuing to deliver our Home Delivered Meals three days each week, providing a combination of hot and frozen meals to our consumers. Delivery is being tag-teamed by our wonderful COA staff so that we can continue to keep our volunteers safe. We were very excited to get our In-Home Services (Personal Care, Homemaking, and Respite Care) back in place in July. We are so thankful to be able to provide those very important services and are taking every precaution to keep both our staff and clients safe.
We will continue to keep you updated of any changes. We are eager to be able to open our doors and see all of you hopefully very soon. We miss you! In the meantime, please know that we are here for you should you have any questions or needs – call us at our main line: 989-772-0748. We hope to see you soon! Take care!
Jennifer A. Crawford, M.S.A., COA Executive Director

Beat the Heat As temperatures rise and public places continue to
remain closed, the Commission on Aging would like to remind you that there may be help available to beat the heat. Unmet Needs funds are intended for older adults who are 60 and older, who meet certain income/asset guidelines, to use for emergency needs.
The Commission on Aging can help with a request for air conditioning units to help prevent heat related illness. Case Managers would also like to remind people to stay hydrated, protect against sunburn, take extra precautions with certain medications and to make sure to not leave pets or loved ones in vehicles in the hot weather. For more information on the Unmet Needs Program, please feel free to contact the Commission on Aging at (989)772-0748 and ask to speak to an available case manager.

Voting by Mail With the election coming up in November and the
concern over the spread of COVID-19, you may be wondering ‘can I vote by mail and how?’ You can vote by mail in Michigan if you are a registered voter. To obtain a ballot by mail, you must first submit a written request by filling out an application and sending it to your city or township clerk. If you need assistance in locating the address of your city or township clerk, you may look it up at Michigan.gov/Vote. All applications for a ballot by mail must be received by your city or township clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Friday before the election. If mailing in your ballot, it must be received by the Saturday before the election. Your city or township clerk’s office can provide you with a large print application. Applications are processed immediately.
Once you receive your ballot in the mail, you have until 8:00 p.m. on Election Day to return your completed ballot to your city or township clerk’s office either by mail or in person. Your signature on the return envelope must match the signature on your file. If not, that ballot will be voided. You may receive assistance in filling out the ballot by a family member or another individual living in your residence. If you do receive assistance in filling out the ballot, that individual must have their signature on the return envelope as well. Family members, individuals living in your residence, mail carriers or election officials are the only people authorized to deliver your ballot to the clerk’s office.
If you have additional questions about the voting process you may contact 989-317-4070 or visit https://www.isabellacounty.org/departments/county-clerk/voting-polling/?limitstart=0 to view State of Michigan Election Information.

COA Walking Path Needs Support Because the COA building is still closed for a while, we hope that everyone feels welcome to come out and walk on our improved path. Plans for 2020 are to complete the beautification project by adding more flower beds and trees. The monies spent for this project have been and will continue to be independent from those funds allocated to the COA for their programs and services. The walking path beautification project is supported solely from donations that are dedicated specifically for that project. If you would like to support the continuing efforts to enhance the beauty of the walking path, please send a check to Friends of Isabella Seniors, 2200 S. Lincoln Rd., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858 made payable to: Friends of Isabella Seniors with Louise Plachta Memorial Fund in the memo. Also, if you would like to have a favorite or memorial tree or ornamental planted on the path, let us know and we will try to plant it this summer. THANKS to ALL who have helped support this beautiful project! Stay Safe.
Caregiver Support
Attention Caregivers: Respite Care, Podcasts, & Powerful Tools for Caregivers, Caregiver Support Group – During This Time of Covid-19 from Mary Ellen Walsh, Caregiver Support Specialist and Trainer
Caregiver: I am glad to have the Respite Care – but where should I go and what can I do? Someone buys my groceries, I don’t want to go into a restaurant, the library is closed, my friend is in a nursing home and no visitors are allowed.
Some Thoughts: Have a lunch date with a friend or family member – lots of places have outdoor seating now. Take a walk, a drive, a nap! Find a cozy spot and read a book – uninterrupted. Have a meet up with a friend in a park. Pick up lunch and have a visit with a friend in his/her home. Set a goal for what you want to do/accomplish during the time your Respite Care worker is in your home – plan ahead.
Do you ever listen or watch Podcasts? Go to: https://www.familycaregiversbc.ca/podcast you will be able to hear some caregivers from British Columbia talk about – support networks, communications, relationships and self-care. The podcasts are facilitated by a therapist in private practice. These conversations are full of rich and helpful information. I hope you can check it out.
Some tips from MSU’s Powerful Tools for Caregivers:
Caring for Yourself -- • Participate in activities you enjoy when you can. • Treat your body well by eating properly and getting some
exercise. • Use relaxation techniques when you can – stretch,
release, repeat. • Read or Listen to books that are uplifting. • Get a good night’s sleep when you are able – nap in
between if you can’t. • Reach out to friends for social support. • Participate in a Support Group for encouragement and to
learn from others. • Write your thoughts/feelings down to stay in touch with
yourself. • Change any negative self-talk into positive self-talk.
Don’t give up hope – a sense of hope is ‘knowing that your present moment has meaning.’ (R. Randall)
“We need not walk alone. We reach out to each other with love and understanding and with hope. We come together from all walks of life, from many different circumstances…We need not walk alone!” Compassionate Friends
Caregiver Support Group – August 18 at 12:30 p.m. we will have our second Zoom Support Group. You can be linked in via the internet or you can call in on your phone. Let me know your interest and I will put you on the list to receive the link!

Rural Older Adult Mobile
(ROAM) Are you or someone you know 60 and older and having trouble getting to or finding primary health care? Then check our Rural Older Adult Mobile (ROAM) care by Central Michigan University. ROAM care provides mobile home care visits to older adults living in Isabella, Clare, or Gratiot County. We provide full geriatric assessments, and routine follow up care for all health concerns. Our goal is to provide care to those who are having trouble accessing primary care, and to reduce the need for emergency services, and inpatient hospitals stays. We aim to do this through thorough assessments, patient and caregiver education, and investigative routine testing. If this care is right for you please contact Myra at 989-774-7026 or email her at [email protected]. For more information visit us online at: http://med.cmich.edu/ROAM

Isabella County Clerk ~ Sharing a
COVID-19 Update Our office is working diligently to keep the voters of Isabella County well informed for the August 4, 2020 Primary Election. I have just received the following information from Lansing and want to pass it on to you all. Please be assured that our office along with every township/city clerk is working to keep the polling locations a safe, clean environment for in-person voting. The State of Michigan PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) is scheduled to be shipped Monday, July 20 to the County Building so we can disperse it to each polling location. If you have any questions about in-person voting please contact me. Please see the link to the most recent executive order further clarifying the mask requirement. Sec. 2 (i) of the EO clarifies that a mask is not required to be worn (but is strongly encouraged) by a voter at a polling location for purposes of voting in an election. Also the FAQs for EO 2020-110 and 2020-115 have been updated to make clear that the indoor capacity limits do NOT apply to voting related activities.
https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/0,9753,7-406-98178_98455-530654--,00.html
Question: Do the limitations on the number of people at indoor gatherings or events apply to voting activities (e.g., at school cafeterias that are used as polling places or to count ballots)?
Answer: No. The gathering and event limitations in Executive Order 2020-110 and Executive Order 2020-115 do not apply to voters coming together to cast their individual vote or to poll workers coming together to cast their individual vote or to poll workers coming together, as necessary, to count votes. Polling places should take steps, however, to enable voters and poll workers to remain six feet from one another at all times.

Early Warning Sirens Isabella County has 29 warning sirens strategically located throughout the county. The sirens are used to warn the public of possible danger in our community. The warning system uses two distinct siren signals in the event of an emergency. First is the SEEK SHELTER siren which is a constant wail lasting for 3 to 5 minutes. If you hear this signal, immediately enter a safe building, go to the lowest level and stay away from windows. Immediately turn on your NOAA weather radio if it hasn’t already activated. Or immediately turn to a local radio station or local cable TV station. Listen for emergency messages and follow instructions. Stay tuned for updates. If you are located approximately within four miles of the Isabella County building in downtown Mt Pleasant you may tune your radio to 1610 AM Emergency Alert Radio. When the dangerous conditions have passed the ALL CLEAR signal will produce an intermittent air horn sound again lasting for 3 to 5 minutes. Do NOT call 9-1-1 to find out what the sirens mean. Please leave phone lines open for actual emergencies. All outdoor warning sirens are tested on the first Thursday of each month at 3:00 p.m.
