The Florham Park men’s platform ten-

nis team is looking for new players to

join the team this fall. Platform tennis

is a cross between regular tennis and rac-

quetball, with a playable screen around the

entire court, which measures about a quarterof the size of a conventional tennis court.

The sport is typically played only in the fall,

    winter and early spring.

Emmett Park, part of the borough’smunicipal complex at 111 Ridgedale

Avenue, is home to two elevated enclosed

courts that are maintained by the Recreation

Department. New team players do not need

to be experts or even have prior experience

playing platform tennis. The team is simply

seeking players with an interest in the game,

as well as some familiarity with playing rac-quet sports. The team practices on Monday

    and Wednesday nights.

Matches against teams from surroundingtowns are usually played on Saturday morn-

ings. Clinics will be held on Tuesday and/orThursday evenings, if there are enough

    interested beginner players.

    For more information, contact the

    Florham Park Recreation Department at

    973-410- 5390, or visit www.florhampark-

For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients

with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure

has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the

recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utiliza-

tion to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure f it. As they

provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini

implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier.

Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an

integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, insert-

ing crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch recon-

structions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

Your comfort and convenience are always Dr. Chiu’s top priorities. To

learn more about these procedures, please call our of fice at 973-377-0224.

    New Jersey Blood Services has

    planned the following blood

    drives:

Sept. 20- Seventh Day Adventist Church

    1:30 p.m..

    Sept. 28- Knights of Columbus, Netcong,3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

New Jersey Blood Services, a division

of New York Blood Center (NYBC) is

asking for help to maintain an adequate

supply of all blood types, but especiallyO-negative – the “universal” blood which

can be transfused into anyone in an emer-gency. In addition, hundreds of addition-

al blood drives need to be scheduled to

meet projected hospital demand. Currentinventory of several blood types is run-

ning below the desired target level.

    “It’s simple: hospital patient demand

for blood often outpaces our best efforts

to recruit donors and schedule blood

    drives,” said NYBC Executive Director

    of Donor Recruitment Andrea Cefarelli.

“There are always reasons but we have toovercome that for the sake of hospital

    patients who need us.”

“This is one of the toughest times of the year,” Cefarelli added. “We’re asking

for our dedicated supporters to roll up

their sleeves to make sure we’re able toprovide our hospital partners with what-

ever they need to take care of their

    patients.”

Blood products have a short shelf life

     – from five to 42 days, so constantreplenishment is necessary. Each and

every day there are patients who depend

on the transfusion of red blood cells,

platelets and plasma to stay alive. Butblood and blood products can’t be manu-factured. They can only come from vol-

unteer blood donors who take an hour to

attend a blood drive or visit a donor cen-

    ter.

how to organize a blood drive call 1-800-933-2566; visit: www.nybloodcenter.org.

Recently, a new concept has taken

    hold across the country with

“Virtual Runs.” A virtual run can

be done by individuals, families, or even

    groups. It’s a self-marathon – on a tread-mill, in a park, or wherever.

The Rogue Runners, a new local com-

pany based in Rockaway, combines the

runs with raising money for charity,

offering even more fun with monthly

special themed events and medallions. The first event is for the kickoff of the

Virtual Runs Celebrate Favorites And Help Charitiesnext season of the Walking Dead in

    October, called The Running Dead.

    Registered participants receive a special-

    ly designed commemorative medal

(bling) and can choose one of two chari-ties to benefit from part of their registra-

tion fee. Individuals or groups can walk,

jog, or run. For even more fun, fans of

the various series or movies can make up

event costumes! The Rogue Runners site

and Facebook pages will highlight photos

    sent in by participants.

Those interested can get more details

    at http://www.theroguerunners.com/.

Registration for the first three virtual

runs is under way now. For those whohave entered 5K runs before, cost can be

    anywhere from $45-$75 for registration

fees. The Rogue Runners only asks for

$25 per registrant, with much of fee

going to charity and for the “bling”

    medallions. A pretty good deal!

    Besides The Running Dead in

October, there is another one in

November tied into the fourth and final

movie in the Hunger Games franchise

called “The District 10K” and for the

new Star Wars movie coming out in

    December called “The (ma=) Force

Awakens Run.”Carry Crawford of Rockway, the com-

pany developer, admits she, her family,

and many of her friends are real geeks.

“We all love all these great TV series

and movies,” said Crawford. “We wanted

to come up with a way of having fun

while exercising, and raise money for

some worthy charities at the same time.”

She went on to suggest that, “groups of

fans can plan a special event day with

props and costumes and they’ll get a spe-cial remembrance of their event with the

    great bling we’re offering.”

The Rogue Runners will continue to

use themed ideas and parodies inspired

    by favorite movies, television shows,

    comic books or web-comics.

Any questions or have ideas for future

    Rogue Runners events, email

    [email protected].

    by Kerry Breen

On Sat. Aug. 15, residents of EastHanover stepped up to the plate at asoftball tournament that doubled as a

charity event to benefit the Be The Match

national registry. The softball tournament was a way forpeople to learn about donation, and registerthemselves, all while enjoying a popularsport on what turned out to be a beautifulSaturday morning in East Hanover’s LurkerPark. The softball tournament, held by theNew Jersey Career Fire Chief ’s Association,is an annual event, although their causechanges from year to year.

Eight teams played. It cost each team$1,000 to register, and each team also helpedraise money that was donated to Be The

Match. Donations are used to help grow thedonor registry, assist patients financially, and fund important research. Overall, thetournament raised $8,000, according toRebecca Kolas, a spokesperson for Be TheMatch.

The East Hanover Fire Department team, captained by Joe Sperli, raised $1,000. TheEast Hanover PBA, captained by JesseNovalis, raised $1,000. The Fire Departmentof Jersey City, captained by Jason Greco, raised $225. The New Jersey State FMBA,captained by Tim Duecsch, raised $1,000.

The Livingston Fire Department, captainedby Dennis Britt, raised $1,000. The NewarkFirefighter’s Union, captained by CharlesWest, raised $1,000. The New Jersey CareerFire Chiefs Association, captained by Bob

Caruso, raised $1,000. The U.S.C.A., cap-tained by Gerard Centanni, raised $1,000.Each team set individual donation goals,

an ideal amount of money that they hoped toraise by the end of the tournament. Everyteam was successful in fulfilling its goal.Donations were made mostly through awebsite created for the event.

The first pitch was thrown by five yearold Delaney of Woodridge. Delaney wasdiagnosed with cancer at three months old,and is the president of Delany’s Clubhouse,a club for platelet donors at Community

Blood Services. She and her family supportother patients by hosting marrow and blooddonation events.

Be The Match is a nationwide servicethat helps blood cancer patients find thebone marrow transplants they need. Theyalso fund lifesaving research and helppatients overcome the financial barriers thatcan arise due to the costs of bone marrowtransplant. Representatives from Be TheMatch were present to help register newpotential donors, and answer questionsregarding the registration process. They also

Softball Tournament Swings In $8,000 For Bone Marrow Charity

helped explain how to host a marrow and/orblood donation event.

Registering as a bone marrow donor is along term commitment, explainedJohannson, but it is often the only way tohelp those suffering from diseases such asleukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, sick-le cell anemia, and other serious illnesses.Approximately 70 percent of patients cannotfind matches within their own families, andtherefore must turn to the Be The Match reg-istry in hopes of finding a donor.

“We work every day to save livesthrough transplant,” as stated on its website, found at https://bethematch.org. For the past25 years, it has been the largest and mostdiverse bone marrow registry in the world.

“We only registered three new donors,”said Elise Johannson, a Be The Match repre-sentative who was present at the event. “Wealways have a great turnout, but at the end of the day education and awareness is our goal, and we succeeded in that.”
