MISSION STATEMENT

Our goal, as the Tri-Cities Wood Carvers Association, is primarily to promote and advance

the Art of Wood Carving while encouraging Wood Burning, Intarsia, Woodturning,

Marquetry, and Scrollwork, as well as carving in other media.

To reach this goal, the Association will promote advancement of all carving techniques

through carving classes of a formal and informal nature, providing a positive environment

for those wishing to learn this form of art. By sponsoring an annual juried competition,

carvers are encouraged to enter their carved works for an assessment of skill, critiques of

workmanship and an opportunity to display their art to the public. Every effort will be

made to provide knowledgeable, qualified and impartial judges so that through these

critiques wood carvers can grow and diversify their skills in creating a personalized Artistry

in Wood.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SHOW COMMITTEE

Welcome to our Twenty Second Annual Juried Exhibit and Sale. Thanks to you, our

exhibitors, we continue to improve and expand our show and awards. In addition to

providing a forum for carvers to compete, this show is the primary support for our annual

Wood Carvers’ Rendezvous, a non-competitive, non-commercial gathering of wood

carvers. Join us at the 19th Annual Wood Carver’s Rendezvous June 10-12, 2016 (see

enclosed flyer for more information on the Rendezvous).

Again, we extend our thanks for your participation in our show. Enjoy your time with us.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

The carving clubs in the Northwest and British Columbia, Canada have joined in an effort

to standardize terms and meaning of rules and regulations in order to offer each of you a

less confusing and more equitable arena in which to enter your carvings, no matter which

show you are entering. Noncompliance with the following will cause a carving not to be

judged.

ELIGIBILITY – This is an open show and everyone is eligible to enter under the

following guidelines.

ENTRY FEES – $3.00 per entry except when classified as Section VII (page 13).

ENTRY LIMITS – A limit of two entries in the same numbered category by the same

competitor. There is no limit on the total number of carvings a carver can enter in the

show.

REPEAT ENTRIES – No work submitted should be more than two years old. A

competitor may repeat an entry from previous shows or previous year to see if a better

award can be won, unless the carving won a “Best of Division” in which case, the

carving needs to be moved up one skill level the following calendar year. Carvings

more than two years old may be brought for display only and sale. (Section VII,

category 700). Bring and display as many of your past show carvings as possible.

Fellow carvers and the paying public would enjoy seeing your work.

NAME(S) – All carvings must be registered in the name of the Competitor. If the

carving is the work of two or more people then all names must be on the registration

entry and on any place cards during the show. All group carvings will be entered at

the skill level of the most advanced carver.

ENTRY SKILL LEVELS – Each individual carver is expected to read the show

rules and determine their skill level. The carver will move up when sufficient awards

have been won and show rules direct. Should a novice or intermediate carver enter a

piece above their competition level and it places third or better, the carver must move

to the higher skill level the next show year (January 1), with the exception of the

advanced level (See Advanced). Once established at a skill level a carver cannot step

down to a lower skill level.

ENTRY CATEGORY CHANGES – The show committee may change an entry to a

more appropriate Section, Division, or Category if deemed necessary, for equality of

the competition. If there is only one entry in a category, the carving may be moved,

by the show committee, to another or mixed category. Seasoned carvers or carvers

competing for the first time are encouraged to enter competition no higher than the

intermediate level.

Page 6: 22nd Annual Artistry in Woodwoodhacker.com/pdf/tcwc/2016 Prospectus.pdf · 2016. 1. 16. · 2 MISSION STATEMENT Our goal, as the Tri-Cities Wood Carvers Association, is primarily

6

1. RECOGNIZED SKILL LEVELS (CLASSES) – The show committee will

recognize the following levels of competition; JUNIOR, NOVICE,

INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED (previously OPEN), and EXPERT.

TWO JUNIOR ENTRY LEVELS – No entry fees for juniors age 9 and under;

and 10 to 16. If two first place awards have been received at this level the carver

is encouraged but not required to enter at the novice level.

NOVICE: A NOVICE carver has grasped the basics of carving and uses a

limited variety of tools. The novice learns to create form in his or her work and

the need for effective presentation of the carving. A certain degree of eye appeal

is necessary to earn awards at this level. The NOVICE level is the appropriate

entry for beginning carvers who are developing their skills. The carver remains

at this level until winning three (3) Best of Division awards on three different

carvings or a Best of Class.

INTERMEDIATE: An INTERMEDIATE carver is one who is moving to more

complicated work and displays considerable skill in his or her work. The

INTERMEDIATE carver understands basic carving techniques, uses tools with

confidence, coordinates a habitat and includes more detail in carvings than at the

NOVICE level. In addition, painting and finishing of the carving takes on more

importance and contributes to the overall artistry of the piece. INTERMEDIATE

is an appropriate entry point for seasoned carvers who are entering competition

for the first time and whose work reflects skills consistent with this skill level.

The individual who is entering competition at this level should believe that his or

her work is of a quality to compete at this level. After winning four (4) Best of

Division awards at the INTERMEDIATE level on four (4) different carvings, the

carver moves to the ADVANCED level.

ADVANCED: The ADVANCED level carver produces work that reflects

creativity, difficulty, craftsmanship and accuracy. Awards are more difficult to

achieve, as the expectations are higher. An ADVANCED level carving also

reflects excellence in carving, finishing technique, originality and the

presentation of the piece as an art form. A seasoned carver may enter the

ADVANCED category by approval of the show committee, but upon winning a

first place or Best of Division award, CANNOT step down in skill level. Upon

winning five (5) Best of Division awards at the ADVANCE level on three (3)

different carvings, in three (3) different shows, the carver moves to the EXPERT

level.

EXPERT: The EXPERT level reflects excellence in the art of carving.

Technical and artistic attention and care are reflected in all areas of the piece. At

the EXPERT level, the artist more readily captures its essence and has advanced

the art of carving with new and innovative creations. The EXPERT carver could

display expertise in one section or a variety of sections. An individual will

achieve a designation of EXPERT for a specific section by winning a blue ribbon

within that section while competing at the EXPERT level. After achieving the

status of EXPERT in one section, the carver may continue to compete at the

ADVANCED level in sections where EXPERT status has not been achieved.

This means that a carver may simultaneously enter pieces at the EXPERT and

Page 7: 22nd Annual Artistry in Woodwoodhacker.com/pdf/tcwc/2016 Prospectus.pdf · 2016. 1. 16. · 2 MISSION STATEMENT Our goal, as the Tri-Cities Wood Carvers Association, is primarily

7

ADVANCED levels but in different sections of the competition. When the

EXPERT has obtained at least four (4) blue ribbons at the EXPERT level, one

each out of the six (6) possible sections, the MASTER Carver designation will be

bestowed.

MASTER CARVER - Achieving MASTER CARVER status is the pinnacle of

carving expertise. MASTER CARVER is not a level of competition but rather an

honor bestowed on an individual reflecting his or her achievements. The

MASTER is able to produce EXPERT carvings in several styles and sections of

competition. To achieve MASTER CARVER status, a carver must earn the

EXPERT designation in at least four (4) of the six (6) sections of competition

plus a minimum of one blue ribbon in each of the same sections while at the

EXPERT level.

2. SEMINAR CARVINGS - Carvings done in a class project or seminar by Novice

or Intermediate carvers will be entered in the appropriate Category. However,

Carvings done in a class project or seminar by Advanced or Expert carvers will

be entered only in Category 710. These are carvings (Category 710) that will not

be judged but will be displayed so that a carver can obtain a critique from one of

the expert judges and improve their understanding of the process.

3. JUDGES AND JUDGING - A judge’s determination shall be final and not

subject to review. The judges will be available to provide an oral critique of

entries at the carver’s request. Judges should be available all day Saturday and

until noon on Sunday. A clerk, recorder or assistant is not to make reference to

any piece or attempt to influence the judges or the judging. A comment sheet

will be completed for each carving

JUDGES ARE INSTRUCTED AS FOLLOWS - Judging at the Novice level

will be for encouragement and growth, carvings will be judged against each other

and judges are to be generous with first, second, third and honorable mention

ribbons. Carvings in the Intermediate level will have higher expectations but

awards may reflect encouragement. Carvings in the Advanced and Expert level

will be judged at the highest standards with carvings receiving ribbons only when

judges feel they have been earned. More than one Blue/Red/White ribbon may

be awarded in each category if warranted. Judges are encouraged to award

second and third place ribbons at this very difficult level rather than disregard a

carving entirely. In the Expert class, more than one blue ribbon per category may

be awarded.

THE JUDGING PROCESS-The process of judging is a consideration of the

following criteria: originality, craftsmanship, design and artistry.

ORIGINALITY - Creative or unusual interpretation of a subject.

CRAFTSMANSHIP - Cleanliness of cuts, execution of detail, surface treatment,

application of color and finish and use of wood grain.

DESIGN – Correctness of anatomy (size, proportions and color). Positioning of

components making up the composition.

Page 8: 22nd Annual Artistry in Woodwoodhacker.com/pdf/tcwc/2016 Prospectus.pdf · 2016. 1. 16. · 2 MISSION STATEMENT Our goal, as the Tri-Cities Wood Carvers Association, is primarily

8

ARTISTRY – Overall effect to create artistic appeal.

4. HANGERS - All hanging pieces must have sturdy wires or hanging devices

securely fastened or have a table stand provided by the carver.

5. LIABILITY - The Tri-Cities Wood Carvers Association, any officer or member,

the hosting facility or an employee cannot be held responsible for any loss or

damage due to any cause before, during or after the show. The club, officers, or

members cannot be held responsible for any checks issued for sales of carvings or

supplies during the show.

6. SPECIAL DISPLAY - Arrangements must be made in advance of the show

dates for special handling or other attention required especially for large, unusual,

or chain sawed pieces.

7. ACCEPTABILITY - Everyone is reminded this is a family show so the carver is

asked to use good judgment in regard to any entry. Generally nudes are not

considered to be in good taste.

8. LASER ART/SAND BLAST/COMPUTER GENERATED ART - Will be

accepted for display only.

9. A carving with 25%+ painted is considered painted. A natural finished carved

piece must allow all of the grain to show through any finish.

10. Allowable parts of a carving in addition to wood:

Novice – Anything is permissible-but remember that only the wood carving is

being judged.

Intermediate/Advanced/Expert – Materials other than wood are permissible in a

minimal quantity. As a carver moves from class to class, less and less non-wood

items should be used.

11. If different type carvings are on one piece, the highest percentage of carving type

will dictate where the piece will be placed.

12. Any problem, disagreement, complaint or comment may be filed in writing with

the show committee for review.

13. Happy Holiday carving. After judging is completed, the show committee will

move all holiday themed carvings to a special table for public judging.
