1. The Global ERP market

Globalization, centralization, and regulatory compliance are the key drivers for continued

ERP investment among large corporations. In the small and midsize business (SMB)

segment, which continues to outgrow the overall market, companies are buying new ERP

systems in response to new customer requirements and the desire to participate in the

global market.

Shown below are the revenues and estimates from ERP Applications from 2006 to 2011.

The graph shows an ever increasing trend which means that the ERP Applications market

is continuously growing at a fast rate and is also expected to grow further by a great extent.

Source: The ERP Market Sizing Report – AMR Research

Traditionally, the ERP market has been segmented by the size of customers the vendors

targeted: large enterprise vendors, midmarket vendors, and small business vendors. It was

thought that the same vendors and products couldn’t serve multiple segments, but that

notion has been disproved recently. We are now seeing many ERP vendors competing

effectively in all segments

1.1 Market Shares

According to a survey conducted by Gartner in 2008, the leading ERP brand in terms of

market share is SAP, followed by Oracle and Microsoft. The other players are all smaller

players having very less market shares. Infor has a market share of 2.9% of the total ERP

market. If we add up Baan, which was acquired by Infor, the total of Infor + Baan comes out

to be 5.2% of the total market.

1.2 The Indian Scenario

Looking at the Indian scenario, the situation is still the same as far as the market leader and

the challenger are concerned. I.e. SAP and Oracle are leading the markets in India too. But

the point to be noted here is that Tally which is a product developed in India and mainly

used for accounting is holding quite a significant share in the Indian ERP market. And

another Indian ERP vendor Ramco is also in the list with a significant market share.

Infor only has a meager 2.75% market share in the Indian ERP market which is not a very

good sign.

2. Company Profiles

2.1 Baan

Baan offered a comprehensive portfolio of best-in-class, component-based applications for

front office, corporate office and back office automation. These applications were used at

over 7,000 customer sites worldwide at some point of time. Baan Company products

reduced complexity and cost, improved core business processes, faster to implement and

use, more flexible in adapting to business changes and optimize the management of

information throughout the entire value chain

History

Founded in the Netherlands in 1978 by brothers, Jan and Paul Baan, Baan has dual

headquarters in Barneveld, The Netherlands and Reston, Virginia, United States of America.

Since 1995, the Company had significantly expanded its sales and service presence in North

America, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

In June 2000, facing worsening financial difficulties, law suits and reporting seven

consecutive quarterly losses and bleak prospects, Baan was sold at a price of US$700

million to Invensys, a UK automation, controls, and process solutions group to become a

unit of its Software and Services Division. Laurens van der Tang was the president of this

unit. With the acquisition of Baan, Invensys's CEO Allen Yurko began to offer "Sensor to

Boardroom" solutions to customers.

In June 2003, after Allen Yurko stepped down, Invensys sold its Baan unit to SSA Global

Technologies for US$ 135 million.

Upon acquiring the Baan software, SSA renamed Baan as SSA ERP LN. In August 2005, SSA

Global released a new version of Baan, named SSA ERP LN 6.1. In May 2006, SSA was

acquired by Infor Global Solutions of Atlanta, which was a major ERP consolidator in the

market.

based view, tailored or templated to the specific needs of industry groups or individual

customers.

applications from a single view, helping to ensure that the Baan Company enterprise

application accurately reflects a company's most current organizational structure, business

practices and operational procedures.

hardware, operating systems, databases, networks and user interfaces without any

modification to the application code and Microsft SQL Server

7. Baan supported popular Unix platforms as well as Microsoft NT, and was the first

solution provider in its class to earn the Designed for Microsoft® BackOffice' logo

certification. Products also support major relational database systems (Oracle, Informix,

DB2, Sybase)

8. Served Vertical Industries - Aerospace and Defense (A&D):

Infor has acquired a lot of companies dealing in ERP software’s. Each of these acquired

companies had their own ERP packages. All these packages may need to talk to each other

if they are implemented in the same enterprise so there should be some arrangement by

which these different packages can communicate, which is in the form of Infor Open SOA.

3.11 Infor Open SOA

With a huge Portfolio of solutions, there is a requirement to enable all these solutions to “talk” with

each other and with other third party software installed by the client. To enable this, Infor has come

out in 2007 with Infor Open SOA which helps the enterprise software vendor integrate its many

acquired product lines.

Infor Open SOA is based on an "event-driven" architecture, whereby end customers can deploy and

upgrade interoperable applications and software components with little or no disruption to other

enterprise systems. Infor's middleware is platform-independent by adhering to industry standards

such as the XML-based Open Applications Group Interoperability Standard (OAGIS). Customers are

able to create their own ecosystems of Infor and non-Infor software components, without having to

rip and replace systems to conform to proprietary middleware technology.

The main use of the Infor Open SOA lies in its ability to help customers enable their existing

software and systems to support greater reuse of software assets, interoperability among assets

and faster and more cost-effective adaptation.

7. Additional advance planning tools within the application are highlighted on the master plan

screen. From one location, you can see a complete snapshot of demand, by item and by

facility. You can easily move from high-level planning right down to detail item planning for

Sales and Production Orders.

a.) Belden Brick Company:

The Belden Brick Company manufactures approximately 225,000,000 bricks annually.

Acknowledged as the industry's quality leader, especially in architectural brick for

residential and commercial use, Belden operates seven plants in Ohio and the mid-Atlantic

and Northeast regions of the U.S. It also operates 160 wells producing natural gas used in

the brick manufacturing process. Though Belden was founded in 1885, there is nothing

antique about its competitive spirit. In modern times, many brick companies have come

and gone. But the challenge over the years has been (and always will be) to respond to the

times while maintaining focus on the qualities that are immutable, both in the product and

the company itself.” Belden understands the role information technology can play in

meeting that challenge.

When Belden acquired Redland Brick Co. in 1996, the companies standardized on SSA

Global’s MK ERP system until 2006, when Infor acquired SSA and began offering the web-

based Infor ERP LN solution. The solution is built on Infor’s open SOA (service-oriented

architecture) and offers extensive lean manufacturing functionality.

Business Specifics:

• The Redland implementation involved converting customer numbers to a new

system, though item codes stayed as they were. On the Belden side, however,

executives were dissatisfied with the old item coding structure and wanted a change

that Infor’s migration toolkit handled beautifully.

• The combined companies also had total inventory on hand consisting of

approximately 70 million units numbered with item lots and location. It all migrated

successfully.

• The filtering functionality of Infor ERP LN is a key. Users such as production

managers and salespeople can create their own filters for each screen, so they can

focus on the data that is important to them.

• Production managers appreciate having only one transaction screen for analyzing

the quantity of scrap produced on a production run and why it occurred.

• Salespeople are using the Infor ERP LN system to answer customer questions

quickly.

• Customers can look up the status of their open orders, their delivered orders, their

invoices, and their acknowledgments.

b.) AB Mauri/Fleischmann's Yeast

AB Mauri/Fleischmann’s Yeast is a yeast and bakery ingredients manufacturer and supplier

to bakers in the United States and Canada ranging from major industrial bakeries through

small craft bakers and food service companies. Its four manufacturing plants consist of two

To achieve the company’s customer service and cost containment objectives, AB

Mauri/Fleischmann’s Yeast evaluated its legacy system and concluded that it lacked the

reliability and flexibility it needed to streamline company processes and revitalize the

business. AB Mauri/Fleischmann’s Yeast chose InforTM ERP LX. Representatives from

various functional areas graded the products on manufacturing capability, including cost

containment, customer service-related applications, and financial control.
