syracuse 13, hobart 11 February 18 • Carrier Dome • Syracuse, N.Y.
Four unanswered goals late in the fourth quarter saved No. 3 Syracuse from a second straight loss to Hobart. The Orange rallied from an 11-9 hole for
a 13-11 victory, reclaiming the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. Daryl Veltman and Jeff Colburn led the Statesmen with two goals and two
assists each. Dan Hardy paced the Orange with five points (3-2). Nick Currie gave Hobart the early lead, scoring on the game’s first shot
just 30 seconds in with a laser from the right side of goalie Peter Coluccini (13 saves). Brandon Baer stopped the first two shots he faced, before Syracuse countered with back-to-back goals. Baer turned in a spectacular first start, recording 15 saves, including several from point-blank.
Veltman pulled the Statesmen even with a shot on the doorstep thanks to a behind the cage feed from Jamie Kirk. Less than two minutes later off an assist by Mike Suits, Veltman put Hobart back in front.
SU responded with three straight goals spanning the first and second quarters. The Orange equalized three seconds before the end of the opening frame, when Hardy ran from behind the cage, leaped in the air from the goal line and shot from 4 feet above the 5-foot-7 Baer’s head. Syracuse opened the second quarter scoring with back-to-back goals to take a 5-3 lead.
A near mirror image of their earlier connection, Kirk got Hobart back on track, dumping home a feed from Veltman. SU answered when Max Bartig came charging in on a substitution, unchecked, and scored from 5 yards out on a pass from Hardy to make it a 6-4 game.
Sean Murphy made it 6-5 with a great individual effort. Emerging from a scrum in front of the Hobart bench, he raced 30 yards to the cage and beat Colluccini under his right elbow.
Syracuse scored the opening goal of the second half, but Colburn needed less than a minute to respond, collecting a rebound on the edge of the crease and burying his first score of the season. Less than two minutes later, Murphy made it 7-all, spinning off his defender and firing a shot from 10-yards out.
The Orange went back in front on an extra-man goal by Mike Leveille, but James Dussich forged another tie, rifling home a shot through traffic. Kirk netted an extra-man goal to give the Statesmen their first lead of the second half. Both tallies were set up by Colburn. The run continued when Mike Lazore posted his first Hobart goal off an assist by Veltman.
Perritt stopped the bleeding with a shot that ricocheted off Baer’s elbow across the goal line to close out the third quarter scoring.
Colburn put Hobart back in front by two with a frozen rope to the upper right corner of the cage with 13:17 remaining, but it proved to be the final score of the contest for the Statesmen.
Sixty-one seconds later, Kenny Nims, scoring on a tough catch and shoot, made it 11-10, and Hardy tied the game with 5:49 remaining. SU won the ensuing faceoff and took a quick shot that Baer saved, but an immediate turnover gave Leveille a shot on a wide open cage and the home team was back in front 12-11. Hardy scored the final goal with 4:21 to go.

Tim Brandau scored with 1:16 remaining in overtime to lift Bucknell to an 11-10 victory over Hobart. Brandau led the Bison with four points (2-2).
The loss overshadowed several exceptional individual performances by the Statesmen. Jamie Kirk recorded a game-high eight points, the most since Daryl Veltman produced eight points at Canisius in 2006. Kirk dished out seven assists, including four feeds to Veltman, who finished with six goals, the most by a Hobart player since Feb. 23, 2003, when John Bogosian ’03 netted six against Butler.
Hobart’s Dan Spinella dominated the faceoff X, winning 17 of the game’s 25 restarts, including all 10 in the second quarter, while Matt Smalley collected a game-high 11 ground balls, many of them on faceoffs, leading the Statesmen to a 44-29 advantage in that category. Smalley’s total is the most by a Hobart player since Tim Booth ’03 recorded 11 against Lehigh on March 22, 2003.
The teams alternated goals in the first quarter, heading to the second tied, 2-2. The Statesmen began the frame with three quick goals and looked poised to break the game open. The first Kirk to Veltman connection started the run at the 13:01 mark. Less than a minute later, Kirk scored on a feed from Mike Suits. Nick Currie, assisted by Kirk, closed out the run at the 10:45 mark.
The tally chased Bucknell starting goalie Matt Antonelli, who finished with five saves. Nick Sciubba provided the Bison with the lift they needed, stopping the first shot he faced and posting 11 in 43:29.
Bucknell snapped out of its offensive funk with four unanswered goals and five of the half’s final six goals to carry a 7-6 lead into the break. Brian Gargan scored twice during the resurgence.
Like the first quarter, the third quarter featured a total of four goals in alternating fashion. Each time Hobart tied the game, Bucknell went back in front, taking a 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter.
With 12:02 remaining in regulation, the final Kirk to Veltman feed tied the game, 9-9. Veltman’s final goal, assisted by Currie, with 1:26 to go gave Hobart its first lead since early in the second quarter, but Perry Menzies’ score, set up by a great behind the cage feed by Austin Winter, with 47 seconds remaining, set up Brandau’s heroics. Menzies had a team-high three goals, while Winter had three assists.
Both teams got off two shots in overtime, but Brandau made the most of his, putting his in the upper right corner of the cage on a blistering shot from 10 feet away. Goalie Brandon Baer made nine saves for Hobart.

Hobart 10, Marist 5 March 13 • McCooey Field • Geneva, N.Y.
Daryl Veltman recorded the 100th point of his career while leading the Statesmen to a 10-5 victory over Marist College on McCooey Field.
Veltman (above) netted a pair of goals and set up two more to raise his career total to 103.
Veltman needed just three and a half minutes and one shot to reach the 100-point plateau in his 32nd career game. He is the fastest of the six Division I Statesmen to reach that milestone, beating Nathan Roost ’98 by one game.
Hobart outscored the Red Foxes 4-1 in the first quarter and never looked back. The Statesmen won all of the major stat categories, outshooting their guests 45-31, collecting more ground balls (43-24), winning more faceoffs (13-6), and clearing at a much higher rate (91.6%-64.2). The Hobart defense was sharp all afternoon, but excelled in man-down situations, killing off all six of Marist’s extra-man opportunities.
Chris David netted a hat trick for the Statesmen, while Jamie Kirk handed out three assists. Jeff Colburn also contributed three points on two goals and an assist.
Paul Santavicca paced the Red Foxes attack with a pair of fourth quarter goals.
Matt Smalley collected a game-high seven ground balls for Hobart, while Matt Ranaghan and Dan Spinella each picked up six. Spinella dominated the X, winning 12 of the 16 restarts he took.
The Statesmen might have won by a much wider margin if not for the efforts of Marist goalie Ryan Penner. He turned back 16 shots, including two from point-blank range, and helped his own cause with the second of the Red Foxes’ two first-half goals. With Hobart employing a 10-man ride, Penner saw Hobart starter Brandon Baer stray too far from his cage. Penner launched a shot from his own restraining box that bounced just inside the crease and hopped up just under the crossbar.
Baer played 43 minutes, stopping nine of the 11 shots he faced. Brad Hester and Max Silberlicht combined for four saves in relief.

Colin Checcio scored 23 seconds into the second overtime to lift Rutgers to a 12-11 ECAC Lacrosse League victory over Hobart at McCooey
Field. Hobart won the faceoff to start the second OT, but a quick turnover
sent the ball in the other direction. Checcio was able to free himself and put home the game-winner from point-blank range, his game-leading fifth of the day.
Daryl Veltman led the Statesmen with three goals and an assist, while Chris David added a hat trick of his own. Matt Smalley also enjoyed a strong outing, scoring twice and collecting eight ground balls.
For Rutgers, Justin Pennington had two goals and two assists, and won 5-of-6 faceoffs. Michael Hurwitz was 10-of-20 at the X, collected a game-high 10 ground balls, and scored a goal.
In the first half, Hobart broke a 4-4 tie with three unanswered goals. Veltman started the string with an
unassisted tally at the 4:07 mark. Smalley posted his first goal of the season just over two minutes later when his pass, intended for a cutting attackman, instead got past its target and goalie Peter Pantages. David netted his third goal of the first half with 33 seconds remaining to lift the Statesmen to a 7-4 advantage.
Seventeen seconds later, Hurwitz ended Hobart’s run with a breakaway score, but Smalley beat the halftime buzzer to send his team into the break with an 8-5 lead.
Pantages recorded just two saves in the first half. He was replaced by Bill Olin at the start of the third quarter. The substitution energized the Scarlet Knights, who outscored Hobart 4-2 in the third quarter. Olin allowed just three goals and finished with seven saves.
After the teams traded goals to start the third frame, Rutgers went on a three-goal run of its own. Checcio sandwiched goals around an extra-man tally by Chris Doctor to tie the game at 9-9 with 3:23 left in the third.
Hobart netted another buzzer beater at the end of the third quarter, this time Will Harrington did the honors for his first career goal.
Veltman converted Hobart’s lone man-up situation to start the fourth quarter to put the home team in front 11-9, but Doctor and Pennington scored at 3:06 and 1:58, respectively, to force OT.
In the first extra period, Rutgers nearly got the win on a shot by Mike Dugan, but an acrobatic save by goalie Brandon Baer, his ninth stop of the day, smothered the chance. Hobart got off a pair of shots in OT as well, but neither was on frame.

Hobart 11, #17 Fairfield 10 March 31 • McCooey Field • Geneva, N.Y.
Max Silberlicht recorded 17 stops in his first collegiate start to lead Hobart to a thrilling 11-10 victory over 17th-ranked Fairfield in ECAC
Lacrosse League action. None was more important than his smothering stop on Greg Downing’s shot as time expired.
In conjunction with Silberlicht’s tremendous defensive effort, Jamie Kirk recorded six points to lead the offense. He registered a pair of goals and dished out four assists to raise his season total to 28, the most in a single season by a Division I Statesman. Nate Hill ’05 held the previous benchmark (26 in 2004).
For the second consecutive game, both Daryl Veltman and Chris David notched hat tricks. Jeff Colburn recorded a goal and an assist, while Nick Currie added a pair of helpers for the Statesmen.
Travis Nelson and Greg Downing led the Stags with four points a piece. Nelson recorded three goals and an assist, while Downing netted a goal and three assists. Conspicuously absent from the scoring column was Michael Bocklet, who had scored at least a point in 19 consecutive games before coming to Geneva.
By the 3:57 mark of the second quarter, Hobart built a 6-3 lead, thanks in part to extra-man goals by Veltman and James Dussich.
Fairfield’s Casey Martin scored the final goal of the first half to send the Stags into the break down two.
The visitors carried that momentum into the third quarter, scoring three straight to seize their only lead of the day, 7-6, midway through the frame. Hobart struck twice before the end of the stanza on goals by David and Veltman to regain the lead.
Fairfield forged the final tie with the first goal of the fourth quarter off the stick of Nelson, but just over a minute later, Sean Murphy collected a ground ball in the defensive end, raced through the midfield and shot as he was dragged to the turf by a defenseman for his seventh goal of the season. His tally was followed by both of Kirk’s goals giving the Statesmen an 11-8 lead.
Downing assisted on and scored Fairfield’s final two goals in a last ditch effort to avoid a second straight loss, but Silberlecht posted three of his nine fourth quarter saves in the final two minutes to preserve the win.
In goal for the Stags, Michael Kruger finished the day with seven stops.

Penn State kept Hobart off the scoreboard over the final 29 minutes of the contest as the Nittany Lions posted a 12-7 ECAC Lacrosse League
win in Holuba Hall. Chris David scored twice for Hobart, while Jamie Kirk added a goal and
an assist. Max VanArsdale paced PSU with two goals and two assists. In goal, Drew Adams posted 15 saves and the win, while Max Silberlicht
battled the substandard lighting and still came away with 11 stops. The Statesmen carried the early play, outshooting their hosts 10-1 in
the first five minutes. Unfortunately, the barrage only earned a 1-1 tie. The teams traded goals twice more before the end of the first quarter.
Penn State started the second quarter with back-to-back goals to build a 5-3 lead, but Hobart rallied with three of the next four scores to close out the first half.
Hobart broke a 6-6 halftime tie when Mike Suits fired home his second goal of the season. The extra-man tally came just 17 seconds into the third quarter.
Penn State responded with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to seize an 8-7 lead. Daryl Veltman appeared to forge another tie a short time later, but the goal was waived off by a crease violation. He was limited to just one first half goal, his team-leading 27th of the season.
The Nittany Lions struck once more before the end of the third quarter and three more times in the fourth quarter.
Hobart outshot Penn State 39-35, but the Lions held a 40-33 advantage in ground balls and a slim 12-11 edge at the faceoff X. Both teams scored once with the extra-man.

Massachusetts 17, Hobart 12 April 14 • McCooey Field • Geneva, N.Y.
Hobart scored the most goals against the Massachusetts defense this season. Unfortunately, the Minutemen did the same to the Statesmen
defense, as UMass came out on top of a 17-12 ECAC Lacrosse League decision on McCooey Field.
A well balanced Hobart attack saw eight players crack the scoring column, paced by Jamie Kirk, who netted two goals and added two assists. He has 31 helpers on the year, tied for 17th on Hobart’s single season list. Daryl Veltman, Chris David and Mike Suits all contributed a pair of goals.
The Minutemen offense mirrored Hobart’s balance, as 11 different players scored. Leading the way was Jim Connolly who registered a game-high five goals. Supporting Connolly was Brian Jacovina and Rory Pedrick who both recorded a goal and three assists.
Massachusetts won the ground ball battle 40-33 and gave Hobart fits in the transition game. The Minutemen failed on just four of their 23 clear attempts, while riding the Statesmen 10 times, creating several scoring opportunities in transition.
The final result hinged on the second and third quarters. After the squads fought to a 4-4 first quarter draw, UMass netted five of the first six goals of the second stanza to build a 9-5 lead. Kirk got the Hobart offense back on track by setting up a goal by James Dussich and scoring one of his own in the final three minutes of the half.
Hobart trailed 9-7 at the break. The Massachusetts defense was perfect in the third quarter, limiting
Hobart to just eight shots. All but Nick Currie’s were wide, while Currie, who had a goal and an assist, hit the crossbar. Meanwhile, the Minuteman offense rattled off five unanswered scores, including a pair by Tim Balise.
Max Silberlicht made seven saves for Hobart in the first 38 minutes before yielding to Brandon Baer, who made five stops in relief. UMass goalie Doc Schneider finished with eight saves, including six in the fourth quarter.
Hobart refused to go down without a fight, winning the fourth quarter 5-3. Veltman deposited both of his goals in the final 15 minutes.

over the Statesmen. The Big Red scored the game’s first eight goals, including seven in the
first quarter. Chris David put the Statesmen on the board midway through the second frame with his 74th career goal, tying Mike Conklin ’06 for sixth place on Hobart’s Division I list.
Cornell scored two more before the break to carry a 10-1 lead into halftime.
Three straight scores to start the second half gave the Big Red a 13-1 lead. The Canadian Connection—Daryl Veltman and Jamie Kirk—broke the string when they teamed up for the 25th time of the season. Veltman’s goal was his team-leading 33rd, which is tied for third since Hobart moved to Division I. The assist was Kirk’s 38th of the year, tying Frank Boyar ’69 for 12th on Hobart’s all-time single season list. The helper also raised Kirk’s point total to 50, making him just the third Statesman since 1995 to reach that plateau.
Cornell scored once more before the close of the quarter to take a 14-2 advantage into the final frame.
Matt Smalley and Sean Murphy scored in succession to start the fourth, but the Big Red answered with the last three goals of the game.

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) is the nation’s largest athletic conference and only multi-divisional conference, with 322 member institutions and over 122,000 student-athletes ranging across 16 states from Maine to North Carolina and westerly to Illinois. Established in 1938 with 58 charter members, the ECAC has since emerged as the nationwide leader in service. The Asa S. Bushnell Center, named after inaugural commissioner Asa S. Bushnell, serves as the main office for the ECAC. It is located in Centerville, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. After Asa S. Bushnell molded the organization from its formation to his retirement in 1970, George Schiebler took over as commissioner from 1970-1972. Robert M. “Scotty” Whitelaw (1972-1989) guided the ECAC through one of the most significant events in its history, as the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIAW) was consolidated into the ECAC in 1983. With the addition of women’s sports, the ECAC doubled its number of championships and greatly increased its membership. Clayton Chapman (1989-1998), Phil Buttafuoco (1998-2006), and Steve Bamford (2006-2007) have also carried the title of commissioner through the last 19 years. Current commissioner Rudy Keeling assumed chief administrator duties on May 1, 2007. The ECAC maintains two primary websites – one dealing with administrative issues, while the
other serves as a fan-friendly site for news and results from all athletic events. Through the ECAC.tv web casting, the conference has the ability to showcase the excitement of college athletics within the 16-state footprint to a national
and international audience. The ECAC also coordinates with institutions, television vendors and broadcast partners to televise quality sports programming on regional networks including Comcast (CN8 Sports), College Sports Television (CSTV), Entertainment and Sports Programming Network - University (ESPNU), and the New England Sports Network (NESN). The prestigious Asa S. Bushnell internship program, named after the first commissioner of the ECAC and established in 1976, offers college graduates from ECAC member institutions hands-on experience in all the areas of the only multi-divisional conference in the country. Former interns proudly represent the ECAC in all fields of the sports industry as directors of athletics, commissioners, broadcasting executives, professional franchise front-office executives, sports information directors and coaches.
