Youth Council Offers Youth Development Fund The Clutha District Youth Council wants to hear from young people or groups in the district who need a financial boost to help them realise an event, project, trip, course or training opportunity. Applications are now open to the Youth Development Fund, established by this year’s Clutha District Youth Council, to help young people aged 12 to 24 to achieve their goals. The Youth Council has allocated up to $2,000 of its annual $5,000 project fund to the Youth Development Fund. Youth Council Chairman Brendan Morrison said the Youth Development Fund is intended to help more young people in the Clutha District reach their potential. “Youth Councillors felt that there were limited sources of funding available for young people in the Clutha District and we wanted to do our bit to try and help.” Mr Morrison said the Youth Council had left the criteria for the fund fairly open and each application would be assessed on its merit. “There are so many different things that young people in our district are involved with whether it be sport, music or academic activities just to name a few, so we don’t want to be too restrictive in who can apply to the fund,” he said. Applicants will be shortlisted and then interviewed by a panel consisting of four youth councillors, one
councillor and one Council staff member. The panel will then decide on the number of recipients and what amount they will receive. Applications to the Youth Development Fund opened on Monday 14 June and close Wednesday 14 July. More information and application forms are available online at www.cluthadc.govt.nz, or by contacting Council’s main administration office.
Surprise Visitor While visiting his great aunt Ann Scott in the Independent Cottages last Wednesday, All Black Brad Thorn learned, over a cup of tea heard he had an ardent fan in the nearby Ashlea Grove Rest Home. Kate Heads always enquired when Ann visited her of Brad’s activities and where abouts. The life long friends, Ann is the sole remaining member of the Stevenson Family of North Branch and Kate the last of the Scott family of Kinness. Curiosity drew Brad to visit his 101 year old admirer who knew his grandfather, local identity Bob S t e v e n s o n . S o m e w h a t bewildered by the presence of the burly lock until Bob’s name was mentioned their conversation never waned. Enquiries among the staff as to “who was the big block talking to Kate”, until a staff member identified the illustrial visitor. A camera was soon produced with the request for a photo, to which Brad replied’, if it’s alright with Mrs Heads its ok by me”. Brad Thorn’s half hour visit gave his elderly fan immense pleasure and left her on a two day high, and Kate’s verdict on her visitor, “ the pearl in the oyster”.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora Sports Exchange Thanks to all parents and supporters who came and watched the Blue Mountain College sports exchange last Wednesday. Thanks to the organisers of this school interchange plus all those involved in ensuring everything happened as it should. Events such as these are an important part of our schooling experience. The teams get an opportunity to play against different opposition outside of their local area. Matariki At assembly this week we celebrated matariki, with a visiting speaker, Marcia Cassidy speaking on the significance of matariki. Relieving Teacher The Board of Trustees are pleased to announce that Mr Tim Lewis has been appointed to teach Science and Chemistry, as from the beginning of next term, taking Mrs Chalmers’s classes as she takes maternity leave Reports On Friday, this week, students will be given their mid year reports to take home. Parents, please ask your children for these reports on Friday and go through the report with them. Then on Wednesday 30th June, from 3-40pm to 7pm, we are having our ‘meet with the teachers’ report evening. Please take the opportunity to attend this and meet the teachers. Bookings are registered on the form that is sent home. Tena Koutou Tena Koutou

HABIT OF MIND Applying past knowledge to new situations is one of the habits of mind identified by Art Costa as being important to acquire as a good learner. An example of this is the participants in the Blue Mountain College sports exchange. Individuals in a team will learn the basic skills required for their code. This skill development can only move to another level by those individuals practising those skills and applying them to new situations. Every time a team plays a game this process continues. How much we engage in this process depends on what goals we have as an individual and as a team.
CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Karta Hewitt and Samantha Drinnan on their selection to the South Otago Year 7 netball team. Also, congratulations to Lucy Pringle and Abby Harrex on being selected in the South Otago under 14 netball team. Well done girls.
MATARIKI Matariki was observed at our school on Monday 21st June. Marcia Cassidy was our guest speaker at assembly and spoke about her life journey, and how she was able to make changes. Although she left school at aged 14, and her teen years were rocky, she has now obtained a Masters degree and works for the Ministry of Education. Marcia provided our students with some powerful messages to take on their own life journey. At lunchtime we watched a DVD about visiting a marae and what happens in a powhiri. This was in place of the scheduled activity of building a human poutama (stairway) to knowledge, which the weather upset the plans for. At the end of the school day students were gifted a piece of fruit each. Our thanks to Tokomairiro Waiora for gifting the fruit and helping to provide sustenance for our youth. A happy Matariki (Maori New Year) to our whanau and community. (Jo Taylor)

St Mary’s School has purchased four interactive whiteboards for each of the four classrooms. They already have a mimio interactive whiteboard in the Library and 24 computers throughout the school. Principal – Mrs Diane Hayes said that St Mary’s School spent 3 years in an Information Communication Technology (ICT) Contract and that purchase of the interactive whiteboards was the obvious next step. The teachers and children are delighted with the acquisition of them and are enjoying teaching and learning using the latest technology. St Mary’s School is grateful to the local Licensing Trust for their support of their venture into futuristic education.
St Mary’s School The Otago Secondary Schools
Netball Tournament The Otago Secondary Schools Netball Tournament was held at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin on June 13th and 14th. Tokomairiro High School was represented by our ‘A’ team and our Year 9 Navy team. Both teams had to play three games of netball each day and even though the games were shorter there were some very sore and tired bodies on Monday night. The Year 9 girls beat Logan Park in their last game and ended up 13th in the junior grade. They had to play some tough competition from around Otago and it was a great learning experience for them and they got better at playing as a team. The ‘A’ team had their two toughest games on the first day against Roxburgh and Catlins and won four out of six games to end up 3rd in the Senior B grade. This is a great accomplishment considering we have five new younger members in the team this year who have not played at this level of netball before. Jessica Brock was our school representative umpire at tournament and she was awarded a Promising Young Umpire award which was a great achievement. Jessica also received the honour of being selected to umpire the Intermediate Grade final. Thank-you to Nikki Milford, Wendy Flett, Jeanine Harrex, Lorraine Tapp and parents who drove cars through and all our supporters. By Julia Flett

Milton Senior Citizen’s Report Twenty one members attended the annual Chinese Dinner at the Nan King Palace in Dunedin on the 10th June. The meal consisted of many courses based mainly on rice, with chicken and fish dishes. John Stewart celebrated a birthday on the day by winning two raffles. It appeared the Chinese Meal was losing its appeal by the numbers attending although those in attendance enjoyed the experience. Entertainment was provided by Edgar Fraser on keyboard and Jim Tomlin on guitar. Last Friday there was a good attendance at the Tokomairiro Parish Hall to watch Green Island’s “Happy Feet” Line Dancing Group perform. President Shirley Garbutt welcomed Yvonne Chandler and Denise Finch to our Club. Dressed in black stetsons, trousers, shoes and lemon shirts they certainly looked smart with a performance to match. The co-ordination of the five ladies was impressive as was their memory to recollect the movements to each dance. Raffles were won by Joan Crankshaw and John Stewart. A sumptuous afternoon tea concluded an entertaining afternoon. Coming Events 2nd July – Taieri Ladies Choir 16th July – Alison Ward sings Country and Western 13th August – Our Concert in the Coronation Hall. Our Club welcomes anyone over 65 years young at heart with an interest in friendship and a programme of events to entertain. “Is there anything worn under the kilt? No, it’s all in perfect working
order.” – Spike Milugan. Last week at Tokoiti School. Room 1 has been learning to count in twos for maths. They have also been putting together an art display for Matariki (Maori New Year). They have been making an alphabet book for Ms Anderton’s new baby. Room 2 has been learning about the Football World Cup and South Africa. They have learnt that the South African flag has a green ‘Y’ shape on it that represents the green, grassy land. They have been making some fantastic posters on the world cup too. Room 3 has been making Maui and the sun art. Once we had finished drawing, three people at a time dyed their pictures with orange, red and yellow dye. We have also been working on our slideshows for presenting our playground models.

Milton Primary School is preparing to perform its school production ‘Little Red Writing Hood, written by our deputy principal Mr Kieran McLennan. This topic was chosen to support the school’s literacy focus for this year. The show will be performed on Friday 25 June at 1:15pm, and again on Monday 28 June and Tuesday 29 June at 7:00pm at Coronation Hall, Milton. The story is about a grandmother, who is an author, telling her granddaughter the story of Little Red Riding Hood which she wrote. The granddaughter loves the story so much that she goes off to sleep and dreams of being an author herself one day. She meets a big bad wolf who tells her she is wasting her time trying to be an author, but she also meets many other characters who try to teach her the skills she needs to write wonderful stories just like her Gran. The show runs for about an hour and includes seventeen original songs all accompanied by our school band with children playing drums, keyboard and bass guitar. It promises to be a highly entertaining performance. Mini Master Chef Competition On 5 June Room 6 had a mini master chef competition. The main ingredient had to be potato, and the dish could only have five ingredients. Each student had to come up with a recipe. There were six groups and four students in each team. Each team had to choose the best recipe out of their group. They then had to design an advertisement for their dish. The event was held in the hall and each group had to set out the ingredients before play lunch and when the bell rings after play the children had to start cooking straight away. Each team had an hour to cook and decorate the meal. There were marks for the advertisement, the flavour and creativity and presentation of the dish. The marking was out of 50 and the highest score was 42 out of 50. The winning dish was called potato savouries’. We had a great time at the mini master chef competition. All of the dishes made were very tasty and we enjoyed eating them once the judging was completed!

We all had fish and chips for dinner, a great chance for family and friends to catch up. This was followed by a special performance the children had prepared then the much anticipated lantern walk. Candles were placed around the Kindergarten grounds which set the scene for a great atmosphere. Even though we could not see the stars on Friday night, the c h i l d r e n r e a l l y enjoyed their walk with their lanterns and looking at the glow of the candles.
