VETERANS DAY 2014 On the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour, World War One came to an end by armistice. Although recognized immediately by President Wilson as a day of remembrance; it did not become a federal holiday until 1935. Then in 1954, the Congress passed legislation changing the name of the holiday to "Veterans' Day". This was done to recognize the service and sacrifices made by all men who served sub-sequent to the First World War. So we met on the lawn of the Robert J. Osgood Middle School, on a mild autumn day. There were the bands and flag squads of Kings Park High School, Kings Park Junior High School. There were marching units from Fr. Seyfried Council Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Boy Scouts - Troops 75 and 539, the Girl Scouts of America had several dif-ferent troops. The line of march was short and pleasant. The viewers along the route were warm and cheer-ing. At Veterans' Plaza, Fr. Sean Gann gave the invocation, to start the speeches for this occasion. Among the speakers was our Past Grand Knight Anthony Paruolo. Tony spoke about the "The Lost Battalion", of the 77th Infantry Division, during the battle of the Meuse-Argonne. He said, "Five hundred fifty-four men started the attack, during the next six days of action; 197 men were killed, 150 were captured or missing in action, 194 men were rescued. A captured officer told his captors "these men are Irish, Italian and Jews, they grew us fighting for their lives, they don't know the meaning of surrender". During this engage-ment members received 5 Medal of Honor and 31 Distinguished Service Cross. As an impromptu speaker was WWII veteran Matty O'Reilly, he spoke briefly about life in Kings Park, but then quieted the crowd when he said, "I was one of the lucky ones, I got to come home". AN INTERVIEW WITH THE REV. SEAN GANN ON THE CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS. by Rich Garland

RG: "Father what is your relationship with the Catholic War Veterans?" Fr. Sean: "About four years ago, I wanted to honor our Catholic War Veterans with "the Garden of Remem-brance", located in front of the School of Religion. I was intrigued with their emblem. After some corre-spondence, the Parish was given permission to use the emblem on the Memorial Stone. The CWV Emblem explained: The Celtic Cross represents to us the symbols of Christianity preserved and protected by valiant forefathers. The letters U.S. on the star are for these United States and stand for the Constitution on which our principles are based. The Star stands for the glory of victory. The Wreath is for the remembrance of those who died that liberty might live. The Circle denotes the perpetuity of the Church, which will last until the end of time as guaranteed by its founder JESUS CHRIST. The Olive Branch of peace signifies our attitude toward all men in fulfillment of our Lord's behest, Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself. RG: "What do you see as the main goals of the Catholic War Veterans?" Fr. Sean: "The most important thing is to be present. That is to give advice, to help in any way, or just give encouragement to veterans in need. It is good that CWV sponsor legislation on the needs of those who served. The best act of all is to visit with the veterans and interact with them. RG: "What is your assessment of the recent scandal at the Veterans Administration, on the deferred or de-nial of care?" Fr. Sean: "Those that served did not say wait two hundred days and I'll serve, they went when they were called. The bureaucracy causing the delays is out of control. It seems as if serving the veterans is second-ary to their existence. Making the veterans wait for care is wrong. RG: "What do you think the Catholic War Veterans and Knights of Columbus could do to improve the lot of veterans?" Fr. Sean: "The simplest thing that can be done for these men is to visit with them, some day when a few of you can spare an hour, go to a Veterans Administration Hospital or home and say hello, and talk awhile with them. RG: Do you have any other comments? Fr. Sean: "The atheists are suing the Department of Defense to have a chaplaincy. They have no belief system, they reject God, they have no symbol, what do they offer. Fr. Sean: "Fr. Kapaun was given the Congressional Medal of Honor, for his conduct during the Korean War. Why did it take fifty years for him to receive the Medal? RG: "There had been a policy that medals of heroism were not granted to non-combatants. The citation of his heroism took place over a long period of time. The verification process is time consuming. After a peri-od like this, the usual explanation is that a strong advocate pushed the process forward.

NEW HEATING SYSTEM FOR HALL With the installation of a National Grid gas meter at the end of August, our new boiler, and hot water heat-er became operational and made us oil independent. It is anticipated that our new system will reduce our en-ergy bill by 30% and with proper maintenance contin-ue to run efficiently for many years to come. Special thanks to Brothers Joe Barbara, Terry Roche, Eric Johnston, and Peter Lehr for planning and coordi-nating the project. Brother Joe Saladino for preparing the blue prints that were submitted to the Smithtown Building Department and Brother John Esposito who installed the system and coordinated the fuel tank clo-sure. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR LIFE

Help Secure Your Future — With Long Term Care Planning Now

Achieving financial security and living life the way you want, that’s what independence is all about. But achieving independence requires sound financial planning, including taking into account how the future need for long term care can impact your assets, your quality of life, and your family’s well-being.

For more than 125 years, the Knights of Columbus a trusted and highly rated fraternal organization has been serving you in the local communities. The Knights of Columbus Long Term Care insurance can help you cope with the cost of long-term custodial care – while maintaining your dignity and choice of care options. The Knights of Columbus can serve as a valuable resource for long term care planning, providing answers to questions you might have and affordable coverage options tailored to your needs. What is your plan for Long Term Care? Long term care (LTCi) insurance can play an important role in the overall financial planning process, provid-ing a variety of important benefits: It can be one of the most realistic means in this market for covering the costs associated with long term care and helping you protect your retirement assets for their intended purpose. It can help to reduce the worry of care that often falls on the spouse or other family members. It may enable you to manage where you receive your care, via a nursing home, assisted living facility, adult day care center, or at home — where most people prefer to reside. The cost of coverage is based on your age when you apply. It may be less expensive than you might think. So the younger you are when you apply, the lower your premiums. Many of us can expect to live a long life. In fact, the life expectancy of people has never been longer than today! While we can expect to live longer lives, the quality of that life can be another matter. You’ve worked hard to create the kind of lifestyle you enjoy. By thinking ahead now about how you would want to manage your future long term care needs — and putting a proper plan in place today — you can feel confident that you’ve taken the necessary steps to secure your future.

To learn more how the Knights of Columbus could fit your personal needs and help secure your financial fu-ture, please contact me today at 631-678-2354 with no obligation to you.

Sincerely and fraternally,

James E. Nealon

PORT JEFFERSON FERRY TRIP On Sunday, September 28, a summer like day, a group of us took the Port Jefferson Ferry-Essex Outing. The excursion included touring the hilltop medieval Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam, CT. The Castle was the home of the late William Gillette, famous for his stage portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. It’s unique period of architecture from 1914-9 with amazing stone work is situated on a 104 acre estate, offering views across the Connecticut River from Haddam to Deep River. Then we proceeded to the historic hamlet of Essex lunching at The Griswold Inn which opened its doors in 1776, catering to yachtsmen. This was a great day for getting together. Hope to see you next time. Jim Sherrard
