A Note From the Director

¨ This Rockin’ Seniors issue was sent to the publisher prior to the Craft Show, so look in the January issue for pictures/financials/results from our biggest event of the year.

¨ HOLIDAYS CLOSURES: The Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, December 24th and 25th and on Friday, January 1st.

¨ INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSURES: Please make sure you read the notice on page 14 of how to check if we are closed during inclement weather.

¨ Our Massage Therapist, Marquita Pattur, has decided to retire; we are sad to see her leave after all these years servicing our members, and we wish her the very best. Please see a note she wrote to you below. We are pleased to announce there will be no break in our chair massage services. December appointments are being made for our new Therapeutic Massage Therapist, Cheryl Eastburn, who has been licensed since 2003 and knows how massage can help with chronic pain, headaches, anxiety, tension, stress and other aging issues. She looks forward to meeting many of you.

oorrHappy Holidays!!!!! I just cannot believe that the season is already

upon us. I love this time of year, with all the sounds, sights, and

smells of the season. One of my favorite things to do is listen to

Christmas Carols (Little Drummer Boy – my fav!) while wrapping

gifts. No gift bags for me, paper and homemade bows are on all

my packages (call me old-fashioned). What are some of your

favorite things about the holidays?

The Center has some wonderful celebrations and events this

month. Please check them out and join us. We especially

hope to see you at our Holiday Dance on December 19th, at our Holiday Potluck on

December 16th, and at the Gift Exchange on December 23rd.

Many people make year-end charitable contributions. Please help us spread the

word about Colorado Gives Day on December 8th where anyone can give to us

online; it’s great for those out-of-state relatives. See more information on page 6.

Your staff wishes you each a happy and safe holiday season. May your new year

Greetings Members,

After ten years providing massage therapy services, I have made the difficult decision to wind up my time at the Senior Center. Many thanks to the Board of Directors, Wellness Coordinator Colleen Morton, and the staff who have made massage affordable for members by securing funding and providing support. I truly appreciate the opportunity made available to me. Most important, I have deep gratitude to all the members who came in to receive massage. This experience has helped me hone my skills, connect in meaningful ways, and fulfill my aspirations to meet the stress and strains of aging by creating an experience of relaxation and pain relief. I will miss you all and promise to keep in touch.

Please know that due to the Center’s commitment to this aspect of the Wellness Program, and the popularity of massage, this service will continue with new therapist, Cheryl Eastburn. If you haven’t taken advantage of massage therapy (at a very affordable fee), please consider it at this time. You will be amazed by the magic of massage!

Our Holiday Potluck is a big event where we serve 100+. We need

people to volunteer for set-up, tear-down and preparing/serving of

the food. It will help us immensely. See Steph.

Don’t you want to be a part of our transportation program?

More riders means we need more drivers. This is one of the most

rewarding volunteer positions there is. See Valerie or Steph.

Our own Joan Marshall is famous!! She is a featured

volunteer in the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer

Program) newsletter, which is a program for volunteers from all over the metro

Denver area. Currently Joan is a driver, receptionist, pickle

canner, and runs the bake sale at the Craft Show. She is

a former Senior Center President. Congratulations!

Membership costs $36 for an entire year, and with a $6 discount per activity for members, it pays for itself as you get involved. You can join by stopping in the Center, filling out a membership form, and paying your $36 dues. There is also

So, what do truck drivers do when they retire? That’s right, they do whatever they can to do

what they love - they drive. This month’s Volunteer of the Month, Mark Schoeberl, didn’t take

long to find himself behind the wheel of a Senior Center vehicle after he joined. It’s obvious that

he truly loves to drive and feels quite at home in the driver’s seat of our buses going on trips and

events, bringing everyone home safely.

A few months ago when he heard that a Facility Chairperson was needed for our Board of

Directors, Mark eagerly stepped-up; he hasn’t stopped working, as he’s been loading all the

donations for the Craft Show from the Center to storage, along with handling a variety of things on

the staff’s to-do lists around the facility. The best thing is that he does it all with a smile.

Perhaps it was that smile that Shirley first saw in her junior year of high school when she met

Mark on a blind date after a basketball game where their two schools played, as they were in

neighboring towns in South Dakota. Mark was on that basketball team, so perhaps she was also

smitten with his athleticism; whatever it was, they never dated anyone else after that. They will be

celebrating their 54th anniversary just before Christmas.

Mark was born in Conova, South Dakota, and grew up in Colman with his five brothers and three sisters on the family farm.

He played football and basketball in high school, and loved to hunt. He joined the National Guard and was still active when he

and Shirley married and settled back in Colman. They have four children, two boys and two girls. Today their children are in

South Dakota, Colorado, Arizona and Oregon. The couple has twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who they love

visiting whenever they can. You can usually tell when the Schoeberl’s are off to see the grandchildren because the copy room

becomes filled with items for Mark to put in storage when he returns.

Mark and Shirley moved to Castle Rock in 2013, after living all over the country during Mark’s career. They lived in New

York, Grand Junction, Washington and in New Mexico where he took up quite a hobby before he retired. The couple raised

horses on their property and Mark took that to the next step as he learned to do rodeo roping. He was taught by Jimmy Cooper,

an all-around cowboy on the rodeo circuit. Mark roped and competed in many local rodeos in New Mexico. Today Mark likes

to hunt, fish, travel in their 5th wheel, and to garden. Besides the volunteer time he spends at the Center, you’ll often find him

playing poker here a couple of afternoons a week.

What he still likes most, however, is getting behind the wheel and driving our seniors out to a meal or to an outing. We are

so glad truck drivers never truly retire. Thanks for all you do, Mark.

A FREE hearing screening is offered once a month

& includes cleaning/checking all types of hearing aids as well as ear wax removal. Please sign up in

advance at the front desk.

Our September Lunch and Learn presenters were from the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue. They had

some great informa!on about smoke detectors that I want to pass on to those who were unable

to a"end. Did you know that your smoke detector unit is only good for 10 years, so if it’s hit that

age and/or has turned yellow in color, it needs to be changed to a new one to assure it's working

correctly? If this task is more than you want to tackle, buy a new replacement and call your handy

rela!ve or handyman who helps with those types of tasks. If you do not have someone, you can call Neighborhood Network at

303-814-4300 to arrange for one of their volunteers to come and install it.

Now let's talk ba"eries, as most of us have heard the annoying li"le beeping that occurs when

your smoke detector ba"ery is ge#ng low - and that’s usually at 3:00 AM! If you change your

smoke detector ba"eries rou!nely once a year, you can avoid that rude awakening. Smoke

detectors usually take a 9-volt ba"ery. If you have no one to assist you in climbing up to change

the ba"ery, you can call Castle Rock Fire and Rescue at 303.660.1066, and they will come to your

house and assist you on a non-emergency basis. Buy your 9- volt ba"eries ahead, so you have

them on hand; store them in a gallon bag in your freezer. When you call, just let them know you

need assistance changing ba"eries (and remember to have cookies ready when they arrive for

this service, as everyone loves cookies).

You should also have a carbon monoxide monitor on every floor of your house, especially in your bedroom, as carbon monoxide is

called the silent killer because you can't detect an odor. These only have a life span of 5-8 years (check the manufacturer notes when

you purchase for the exact date they expire) and need to be exchanged periodically for a new one. Those in our home recently started

beeping and said "end" in the li"le lighted area - no deba!ng what that meant! You can also purchase a combina!on carbon monoxide

monitor/smoke detector so they are in one unit.

Many people use daylight saving !me to check all these monitors and change ba"eries, but another op!on is the start of a new year. It

doesn't ma"er what the day is, as long as you remember at the same !me each year. I remember in the 1970s when my parents first

put smoke detectors in their home which was built in 1900. When the first ba"ery started giving its low warning beep, they were

convinced there was a bat in the basement and were trying to find it and chase it with a broom. They never did find that bat, but did

discover the ba"eries need to be changed rou!nely. Be proac!ve and you may avoid waking up to a late-night beeping "bat"!

December 8th is a day when Colora-doans give sacrificially to their favorite non-profits. It’s “Colorado Gives Day” and our third year where people can

give tax-deductible online donations to our Center, and help us receive a por-tion of the $1 Million Incentive which is

divided among the non-profits. We ask you to please encourage family

members to give on your behalf.

Thanks to all of you, we did it! We were one of only six charities (out of 21) in the recent Shopping Extravaganza that surpassed the 100 tickets sold mark, and, thus were

awarded a higher donation. We received a donation check for $6,183.00 from the Outlets at Castle Rock (compared to last year's donation of less than $1000 when we didn't make

our goal). In addition, we were the winners of an online ticket sales contest; the Outlets donated a gift basket for the

Silent Auction at our recent Craft Show, resulting in even more money for us. Thanks to everyone who participated

as you helped us go over the top.

Purchase Castle Rock’s MotoSpa car wash gift certificates for $10 each (a $15 value) at the Center. Use them yourself or give as gifts. They are one-time-use cards. The Center receives a donation of $5 back from MotoSpa. What a great deal for everyone! The cards don’t expire - and everyone needs to wash their cars in the snow - so buy a bunch of them.

If you sign up for an activity and find you are unable to participate, let the front desk know as soon as possible. No

credits are issued for cancellations made the day of or the day before an activity. If you cancel before the deadline, notify the

Senior Center during business hours of 8:30am-4:30pm Monday-Friday, and we will issue you a credit. We do not

refund ticketed events. Credits expire after one year.

Besides, it’s the holidays and we consider ourselves family, so why not enjoy a good old-fashioned family dinner together as we end 2015. Your Activity Fee includes your transportation to this beautifully decorated famous restaurant in Lakewood, along with your complete all-you-can-eat served dinner consisting of their famous fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, cottage cheese, kidney bean salad, pickled beets, cole slaw, hot corn fritters, sodas and coffee, a hot fudge or strawberry sundae, and all taxes and gratuity. We will start with brunch and then go on to a Denver tradition. Hope you can join us on this old fashioned trip. There is walking/standing involved for about 30 -45 minutes. It will be indoors. Activity Fee doesn’t include the cost of your individual brunch or any purchases you may make.

CONCERT - A Classic Holiday Concert Parker PACE Center with Parker Symphony & Chorale Sunday, December 6 1:00 PM $28 ($34 non-members) There is nothing quite like hearing your favorite holiday and Christmas classics played by an orchestra and sung by a large choir of voices. If you agree and want to enjoy some professional caliber music without traveling to the city, join us for this matinee concert in Parker. You’ll be inspired and ready to usher in the holiday season. CASINO TRIP - Ameristar in Blackhawk Tuesday, December 8 8:30 AM $10 ($16 non-members) We’re headed up the hill (hopefully no snow) to one of the biggest and grandest casinos in Blackhawk. Will you have some luck. Your Activity Fee does not include gambling and food costs.

TRIP - Evening Holiday Lights Tour in Denver Monday, December 14 4:00 PM $8 ($14 non-members) This is our 4th year doing this trip because it is so popular (and there are no parades to get in our way, like last year, so it will be better than ever). What is it about outdoor light displays that gets everyone in a great mood? If you feel that way, join us and take in the sights without worrying about the traffic. We stop first for dinner at Black Eyed Pea (on your own), and then take a walking “Blossom of Lights” tour at the Denver Botanic Gardens ($9 senior fee which you will pay at the door if you feel you are up to it in the cold, or you can stay on the bus). From there you’ll get in the warmth of the bus for a driving tour of downtown Denver and some of the city neighborhoods known for great lighting displays. Dress for the weather at the Botanic Gardens. Activity Fee doesn’t include the cost of your individual dinner or the Botanic Gardens ticket.

THEATER - The Nutcracker of Parker Parker PACE Center Sunday, December 20 1:00 PM $32 ($38 non-members) If you’ve ever seen The Nutcracker at the Buell or another big city theater, it is spectacular, but you were probably a great distance from the stage. We love going to the PACE Center because the intimacy of the theater really allows everyone the opportunity to be near the stage to really see the gorgeous costumes and dancing; you’ll really feel like you are transformed right into the magical settings of Tchaikovsky’s most famous of ballets. This is the 12th year of this show and you will not be disappointed.

BOOK CLUB MEETING Tuesday, December 1 10:00 AM No Activity Fee This has really grown into a wonderful group of folks who like to read and to hear what others are reading. Anyone is welcome to stop by. You’ll get ideas for books to read and for authors to check out. If you like, let the group know what you’ve been reading. No need to sign up, just come when you can on the first Tuesday of the month.

NEW YEAR’S EVE DAY OPEN HOUSE Thursday, December 31st 8:30-2:00 Bring food to share The game tables will be open all day for you to enjoy with old or new friends, so stop on by and shuffle the cards. We’ll bring in some board games if you want to play something different. Bring an appetizer or other dish to share, and we will have the food out to munch on all day. At noon we will toast the new year and wish everyone blessings for 2016. The Center will close at 2:00 PM. Note that there is no transportation or VOA Lunch on this day.

BINGO FOR FUN - Tuesdays December 1 & 22 1:00 PM On the 1st it’s a nickel a card per game and you can play as many cards as you desire and can handle. On the 22nd it’s White Elephant Bingo - please bring in wrapped or bagged white elephant gift(s) and each bingo winner takes one home. We play until they are all claimed.

SENIOR ART CLASS Thursdays, December 3 & 17 2:00 PM $6 ($12 non-members) You won’t find a better deal on an art class anywhere, as all the materials are included in the fee. Our instructor, Blair, walks you through each project, step by step, so no art experience is needed. Yes, you can be an artist and take home what are sure to be some wonderful holiday original pieces of art.

We learn to “craft” our first drafts into compelling pieces. This is a group open to those experienced in writing and to those just wanting to give it a try.

STATE-WIDE FUNDRAISING EVENT - Colorado Gives Day Tuesday, December 8 - All Day If you - or any of your friends or family members - want to give a tax-deductible year-end financial donation to your Center, this is the day to do it because of the $1 Million Incentive Fund which will be divided up among all the participating non-profits in Colorado, depending on how many donations each receives on December 8th. WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION

We occasionally close the Center to keep everyone safe and

off icy and snowy roads, not always following the school

closures. Sometimes we may delay our opening.

There are 4 ways to check to see whether we are closed or opening late: 1) Call the Center and listen to the message - if there is no special

message, we are open; 2) Watch 9NEWS, CBS4 and Fox 31 - our information will be scrolled across the bottom of the screen; 3) Check

the homepage NEWS on our website as we will post it - you must actually go into the website, not just look below the map if you Google

it; 4) Like us on Facebook and you will receive notices. We try to have these announcements in place by 7:00 AM, although please

understand that occasionally we have technology issues. Also, in the event of a delayed opening, please check our phone message before coming to the Center, just in case we have to close. Thank you for

understanding as we make decisions regarding your safety.

The Rec Center provides indoor courts for us for Pickleball, the fastest growing senior sport in the

U.S. We have round-robin games during these open times. There are some extra paddles if you just want to give it a try. You do need to sign-in

LEAP stands for Low-Income Energy Assistance Program. It is a federally funded program that

operates from November 1 through April 30 and is designed to help low income households with

winter home heating costs. To be eligible you must pay home heating costs to an energy provider, fuel dealer, or as part of rent. You must be a permanent

legal resident of the US and Colorado, or have household members that are US citizens. Also, the maximum family household income must fit within certain guidelines. To find out more about LEAP,

Phyllis Tumey competed in the Huntsman

Senior World Games in St. George, Utah, in

October. This was the 29th year of the event,

which had over 10,000 participants in 42

different sports competing by age bracket.

All 50 states and 19 foreign countries were

involved. She has represented Colorado on a

women’s softball team for 8 years, this year

in the 65+ category. After many games of

tough competition among 16 teams, in 90+

degree heat, she and her team were awarded

the gold medal. Phyllis is amazing; she even

had enough energy to hike in the nearby

national parks and can’t wait until next year.

The Denver Regional Mobility and Access Council (DRMAC), which

oversees transportation programs throughout the metro area, had their

annual awards ceremony on October 1st. Of the 6 awards given out

to individuals, 2 were to the Castle Rock Senior Center, and we

couldn’t be prouder of these two gentlemen who were recognized for

their selfless service to our transportation program. Congratulations.

Bill Kelly, our Board Fleet

Manager, was given a “Special

Recognition Award” for all he

does on a daily basis to keep our

cars, vans, and buses operating

and maintained. Think about all

those vehicles, all needing

regular oil changes and tire

rotations, among other things,

and he makes it happen.

Joe Straher was named

“DRMAC Volunteer Driver

of the Year,” quite an honor

considering how many

drivers there are throughout

Denver. Joe is truly a

backbone of our program,

averaging about 116 hours a

month, four days a week,

driving for the Senior Center.

Dan Daley won the

Dining-to-Donate award

for October after he ate at

Duke’s Steakhouse
