Saint Agnes Parish, Arlington, Massachusetts - Pent ecost Sunday - May 14-15, 2016

Parish-wide pilgrimage to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross

On Labor Day, September 5, 2016, Saint Agnes parish ioners are invited to participate in a pilgrimage to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. Some people will want to walk, others to ride. Right now we are asking people to let us know if they are interested In participating in thi s pilgrimage.

In his pastoral letter issued on the recent Sunday of Divine Mercy, Cardinal Sean reminded us of the possibility of earning a plenary indulgence during this Jubilee Year of Mercy by making a brief pilgrimage to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and passing through its Holy Door. Individuals may make the pilgrimage once to earn a personal plenary indulgence, or even more times to earn a plenary indulgence for deceased family members and/or friends.

To complement these individual pilgrimages, we propose here a parish-wide pilgrimage in which parishioners will walk as a group from Saint Agnes Church in Arlington to the Cathedral in Boston, a distance of seven and a half miles, or 12 kilometers. Of course there will be many who will be unable to walk but who

nevertheless wish to participate in the pilgrimage; we plan to accommodate these parishioners by using suitable transport, for example, hired bus(es).

The pilgrimage will take place on Labor Day, September 5th, 2016. Doing so on a Monday enables us to involve the priests without further burdening them as it would on a Saturday or Sunday. We should also be able to count on reasonable weather.

The conditions for reception of the plenary indulgence are . . . Sacramental confession of sins; Profession of faith; Participation in the celebration and reception of the Holy Eucharist with a reflection on Mercy; Offering prayers for the intentions of the Pope.

It is proposed that the pilgrims fulfill these conditions according to the following scenario: On Saturday, September 3rd, pilgrims will make their confessions between 3:00 and 4:00PM or before the 5:15PM Mass. On Labor Day, Monday September 5th, those walking the pilgrimage will gather at Saint Agnes Church around 8:15, in time to leave the church at 8:30 with the expectation of arriving at the Cathedral around noon.

Those using transportation to the Cathedral will leave from the church at a time such that they will arrive at the Cathedral at noon, around the same time as the walkers arrive. All pilgrims will then process together through the Holy Door. Once inside the Cathedral, in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Father Flatley will celebrate Mass with Father Jack concelebrating. There will be a homily reflecting on God’s mercy, and we will recite the Creed as our profession of faith. At the conclusion of Mass, we will offer prayers for the intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Following Mass the Holy Eucharist will be exposed for about one hour.

Returning to Arlington at the conclusion of the ceremony, walkers will make use of pre-arranged rides or public transportation. Riders will be returned to the Church using the hired transportation.

Clearly there will be logistical considerations the scope of which will not be known until we have a clear picture of how many parishioners wish to make this pilgrimage. We hope to have in hand a reasonable estimate of these numbers – walkers and riders – by Memorial Day, at which point we can begin dealing with the logistical aspects of the pilgrimage.

Please express your interest in joining this pilgri mage by filling out a registration card available i n the vestibule of the upper church, or on the counte r at the back of the lower church, and placing the completed card in the brown box provided.
