History of the Texas Annual

For those not familiar with the evolution of this exhibition , it is worth repeating the following facts.

In 1940 the directors of the museums in Houston, SanAntonio and Dallas organized a painting and sculpture competition open to all artists of the state. The original plan of the threeoriginating museums was that in alternating order one of themwould collect the entries, hold the judging, exhibit the show andthen circulate it to the other two. All three would contribute prizesand share costs. Other agencies in Fort Worth, Austin, Beaumontand Lubbock have exhibited the show at different times.

At first, Texas General was chosen for the name of theexhibit because prints, drawings, and ceramics were included. Bythe time of the eleventh consecutive competition in the season of1949-50, these categories were withdrawn since special competitions for each had come into existence. That year the exhibition wascalled the Texas Painting and Sculpture Annual and this name hascontinued.

The State Fair re-entered the scene in 1952 by promisinga Purchase Prize Fund of $1,000 yearly and the exhibition becamea feature at DMFA during the Fair. Since then DMFA has organized the exhibition and shown it first with continued help from SanAntonio and Houston in the form of prizes, shared circulation costand exhibition. The first of the annuals in 1940 had seven prizestotaling $350, not inconsiderable reward then.

This year prizes for the 23rd competition amounted to$4,000 of which $3,300 is money for five purchases for the permanent collections of the sponsoring and exhibiting museums.

Because of the steadily increasing number of artists submitt ing to this exhibit in past years, it has been necessary to limitthe number of entries to one per artist. Even so, 518 entries weresubmitted to the 1961 exhibit by artists in 72 Texas towns. Thejury accepted 85 works.
