Last weekend the Sacrament of

Confirmation was conferred with the

laying on of hands, the special prayer

invoking the Holy Spirit, then the

individual anointing with Chrism and

sign of peace. Bishop Terry Brady

confirmed 59 from our community.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus used both word and action to

bring about the miracle of physical healing of the blind,

deaf and dumb man. Jesus put his fingers into the man’s

ears and touched his tongue with spittle … he looked up to

heaven, sighed and said to him ‘Ephpheta’ be opened.

The Church continues to use both words and actions to

convey the deeper reality of God’s love and presence in

our lives and our world. The liturgy is full of symbolic

actions and ritual gestures: the sign of the cross, kneeling,

standing, raising the host and chalice, striking the breast,

signing the forehead, lips and breast with a cross before

the gospel is read, bowing to the tabernacle or altar, the

sign of peace. The words and gesture of the Ephpheta in

the Infant Baptism ritual are worth repeating today: The

Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. May

he soon touch your ears to receive his word, and your

mouth to proclaim his faith, to the praise and glory of God

the Father.

Are you good at keeping secrets?

You might have been asked to

keep a confidence. This is a

secret, I will tell only you, but

please don’t tell anyone else.

Then that person can’t resist and

whispers to the next person. This

is a secret, don’t tell anyone. Sooner or later the secret is

out in the open. This happens in today’s gospel. Jesus

took a deaf and dumb man aside with only a few people

around and healed him. Jesus ordered them to tell

no-one about it, but the more he insisted the more widely

they proclaimed it! Mark’s purpose is to reveal Jesus as

the crucified Messiah, not simply an itinerant

wonder-worker. Jesus is about spreading the Good News

of the Kingdom of God and hoping to avoid the attention

of the religious and political leaders who were out to trap

and arrest him. Mark has Jesus travelling in Gentile

territory indicating the Church’s mandate to go out to all

the nations.

† The PPC would like to invite any interested parishioners to consider being part of the ministries of Welcoming, Hospitality and Transport. We invite people to consider the very important work of these ministries in our Parish involving looking after new parishioners and welcoming regulars at weekend Masses; being part of a team to provide support for parish morning teas and other gatherings; and to provide assistance to those of our community who may need help with transport to get to Mass or other functions held within the Parish.

† There are plans for a mini Advent Retreat to be held in the Parish Centre, early in Advent to help us to prepare for this wonderful season, and plans also for a Spirituality Companion Group and a Social Justice Group – opportunities for people to connect.

† At the conclusion of 2015, there will be some PPC members for whom their term is complete, leaving vacancies – please consider the possibilities for your personal growth in this service of our community.

Enquiries can be directed to PPC Members at Mass, or via the Parish Office.

If anyone in our parish would like to attend this, please contact Credo direct on 9307 8477 or email: [email protected]

We give our thanks, Creator God, for the fathers in our lives.

We ask for Your blessings for them all

and forgiveness where it is needed.

This Father’s Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for

their children and families, and the ways – both big and small – they

lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach.

So too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when

fathers pass early or are absent – grandfathers and uncles, brothers

and cousins, teachers, pastors and coaches – and the women of our

families.

For those who are fathers, we ask for wisdom and humility in the face

of the task of parenting. Give them the strength to do

well by their children and by You.

In Your Holy name, O God, we pray.

† PRIESTS’ RETIREMENT FOUNDATION APPEAL

The Word Made Flesh

The Council documents declare that ‘it is Christ who speaks’ when the

Scriptures are proclaimed in Church. This has incredible implications, not just

for the readers who enable Christ to become present amongst us through

their word and the example of their lives, but also for us the assembly. How

do we ensure that our hearts are fully open to receive God’s Word? This

requires prior preparation. It also requires our physical attentiveness to

engage with the proclaimers and preacher during the Liturgy of the Word.
