Every photographer, professional or amateur has probably tried oncein a while (the latter probably on bonfire night with a sparkler) to createpatterns in the air using a bright light and a long exposure. SanFrancisco based photographer Meghann Riepenhoff’s Instar series ofphotographs is a particularly aweinspiring example of this.

Sunflares bounce off orbs, solar winds shape dust which glows againstthe black background and distant galaxies sparkle as if Riepenhoff hasdiscovered another Witch's Head nebula. The celestial landscapes areRiepenhoff’s investigations into how small insignificant things canbecome fascinating.
Instar is the name for the biological term of the molting stages ofinsects and Riepenhoff was inspired by writer Rebecca Solnit’s quoteon the subject: ”The strange resonant word instar implies somethingboth celestial and ingrown, something heavenly and disastrous, andperhaps change is commonly like that, a buried star, oscillatingbetween near and far”.

from above. Riepenhoff further manipulates the images usingtransparent materials and additional light sources to create her otherworldly images.
Meghann Riepenhoff Instar Series
The objects I use are domestic detritus and the negatives are ofpersonally significant landscapes,” she says. “I’m interested in thepotential for the insignificant to evoke the immense, the personal toresonate at massive scale, and the oftenreactive meeting places ofseemingly opposing forces in the midst of transformation.” It's a trulylovely series. If however, you prefer to view the real thing, there's noone who does it better than our very own David Malin.
