Billy’s Bylines

Billy Smith The Fruit of the Spirit This is the season for tilling the soil and planting the seed for gardens that will produce an abundant harvest during the summer and fall. The Christian life is based on the principle that the seed of the Spirit produces the fruit of the Spirit, a process that is not easily nor quickly accomplished, but grown over the course of time. Paul discussed this theme in Galatians 5:22-23, where the harvest of nine spiritual qualities occurs when the word of God takes root in the human heart. He begins with love which means benevolent good will toward both friend and foe. This is the word Jesus used when He said, “Love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44), which helps us understand what seems to be the impossible command. The second fruit is joy, the quality that results from being in a right relationship with God, leading to right relationships with others. It is not the happiness resulting from what we have, but what we are, the joyful children of God regardless of our circumstances. Peace is the fruit of rest in the knowledge that no matter how great our enemy may be, God is always stronger and will grant us the peace that passes understanding (Phil. 4:7). Next is the fruit of patience which refers to patience with people rather than things or events, even to the point of forgiving those who deliberately hurt us. The fifth and sixth fruits are closely related, kindness and goodness, which together describe a goodness that is kind. They refer to the goodly kindness that not only helps a person, but also provides loving correction and discipline when necessary. Faithfulness is the fruit that is trustworthy, loyal, and true, the person who is reliable. Gentleness is the quality that is considerate of the needs and feelings of others. Paul brings the list to a close with self-control, referring to the mastery and discipline of one’s body with all of its powerful desires. Wouldn’t you love to possess each of these qualities? Paul says these fruits will be our harvest when we keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).

Family Matters I hope you are planning to attend our upcoming Family Matters lesson series. We have four (4) outstanding speakers coming our way and this should be a very positive and encouraging series of lessons. Here are a few things I would encourage you to do:

Page 5: 240 White Avenue Phone: 731-989-5161 FAX: 731-989-9822 ...hendersoncoc.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/MESSENGER-17-4-2… · 1. Heaven is a REAL, literal place – John 14:1-6 2

• Pray for the success of this lesson series • Tell your friends and family about it • Make a commitment to attend the series yourself

The dates for this lesson series are April 30 – May 3. Teens and all adult classes will meet in the auditorium and all other classes will meet as usual. We will have a Picnic in the Park at 12 Noon at Gene Record Park. This is a “Bring Your Own Bag” picnic. We will have a devotional at the park. Sunday worship services will be at 10AM and 5PM. Start time on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be 7PM. Mark your calendars now. You will be blessed by attending this lesson series. Thoughts about Heaven I recently taught a class on the subject of heaven and thought that I would share some of the scriptures that were used. We need to be thinking about heaven on a daily basis, determining to live in a way that we will be named in the Book of Life.

1. Heaven is a REAL, literal place – John 14:1-6 2. Heaven is a place of glory, a rest for the weary – Revelation 21:1-4,23,25 3. Heaven is a place of Godly, righteous inhabitants – Revelation 22:14; 20:15 4. Heaven is a place that we will see and be with Jesus – 1 John 3:1-3 5. Heaven will last forever – Matthew 25:46; Romans 6:23; 1 John 5:11 6. There is no reason NOT to go to heaven – Matthew 11:28-30; Acts 2:38; 1 Corinthians 10:13; 2

Timothy 4:6-8 I hope that you will have a great week and will receive many blessings from God through the study of His Word.

Youth Notes

Senior Graduation Sunday is May 7th. We will be honoring our seniors and their families. If you haven’t already turned your pictures in for your video presentation, please do so ASAP. We enjoy honoring our seniors on this special day. You certainly have earned it and deserve it. Summer is just around the corner. MSYC, Maywood, Horizons, Six Flags, etc. are just some of the things that we are working on and our hope is that you will want to be involved with as much as you can. Some trips will cost more money than others. Please do not let that be a hindrance to you. Let Jared or me know if you will need some help. Parents, encourage your kids to attend church camp during the summer. It’s always an uplifting and fun time and much can be learned. Lifelong friendships are created every summer at church camps. Our eldership has agreed for several years now to pay ½ of one week to either MSYC, Maywood or Horizons. This is a great benefit and shows their commitment to providing for spiritual growth of our kids. Be sure to thank them for this.

Please let Jared or me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything associated with the youth group. We appreciate and value your input. Have a great week!
