Shocking news ... ! I told you, right herein this column not too long ago, there wouldbe shocking news in the New Year . . . andthere it is right on page two. But, hold on toyour hat, it's not over yet! (EC: Talk about aship without a rudder . . . !)
Frustrated musicians . . . ? It's a realexperience to sit in on a listening/auditionsession with a bunch of record people. It'salmost like going to a seance. (EC: A spiritualmeeting . . .?) One holds his head as if in adeep trance, one starts snapping his fingers, and then goes wild, playing imaginary drums, another gets so caught up in the music heflings himself all over the room . . . and theguy who's going to sign the band, appears tovery calm, if not slightly bored. (EC: But dothey hold hands . . . ?)
I'm confused ... ! With all the mergers andtakeovers, there's news of a major MAJORretailer going public . . . and I think that's afirst for Canada. But the deal is socomplicated, it'd take a Bay Street lawyer tounderstand what's going on. But have heart.I'll call my old friend PP, and he'll explain itin recordbiz language. (EC: What's wrongwith a record industry lawyer?)

Shades of the disco era . . . ! Rememberwhen disco was hot and then, all of a sudden, the industry shot itself in the foot again."Disco sucks" was the war -whoop fromA&R and promotion and publicity people, and out the door it went. But, notcompletely. Along came dance music anddance clubs, and like discos, dance clubshave provided a wedge for today's radioprogramming. Just look at the number ofdance -oriented records are being played onradio today, moreso in America, but . . . youtell 'em Ellie. (EC: As America goes . . . sogoes Canada . . . !)
Take a deep breath ... ! Caught ya! Lastweek, right here in this column, I mentionedthe gas mask I received in a plain box, andsuggested that it might have something to dowith WEA's upcoming Greenpeace album.Well, on that same page was a short piece onBrighton Rock's album . . . and guess whatthe title is? You're absolutely right, Take ADeep Breath. I received more than a fewphone calls, pointing out MY MISTAKE, butwas it a mistake or was it a teaser? Of all thephone calls I received . . . not one personfrom the record company questioned it! (EC:Is that a double entendiv . . ?)
The value of promotion . . . ! When itcomes to promotion and publicity,Canadians must be at the lower end ofwhatever gauge that measures such things. There have to be a couple dozen weekly and
monthly publications in this country, all witha lot to say about the music business, but veryfew take advantage of this FREE INK. Now,take the Americans for instance. On average,I receive six to seven phone calls each weekfrom U.S. promotion and publicity peopleasking about what's "going down in the landof the ice and snow," and sometimes they'lleven use a quote or two. Americans useeverything available to them, and the Britishand Australians are even more interested inutilizing news, chart numbers and anythingthey can work with. (EC: Maybe that's whythose countries have all the hits . . . !)
Musical chairs in the industry! Watch fora few moves within the industry. Thereare some nice jobs up for grabs, some noteven publicized, and there are raiders.(RAIDers??) But that opens the door for thebright, bushy -tailed people looking forcareers and hopefully, they will be reallydedicated to the people who opened the doorsfor them in the first place. (EC: Is thatanother double entendre?)
Broadcast profits are up ... ! With all theshakin' and dealin' going on in the broadcastsector, the word profit is being tossed aroundlike it never has before. There are more thana few personnel moves as well, and just lookat Page 15 this week . . . WOW . . . are thebroadcasters on the move or are they on themove! (EC: Some are even moving out!)

COVER STORY -
by Graeme Boyce
Skid Row singer slams Canadian record labels If his family had moved directly to
Peterborough, Ontario, instead of California, when they left the Bahamas, then
perhaps Sebastian Bach might have dreamed of playing in the NHL. However, Gretzky
was not yet living in Los Angeles at the time that Bach was there, so he dreamed of
playing in a rock 'n' roll band. Then, his family moved to Peterborough, which was
close enough to Toronto, fame and fortune. Skipping ahead a few years, Bach now
lives in Long Branch, New Jersey, a stone's throw from Ashbury Park and across the river from New York. He plays in a band, a hard rock band, called Skid Row, who have just released their debut album on Atlantic
Records. A North American tour for Bon Jovi is underway and Skid Row is the opening act. Guess who manages both Bon Jovi and
Skid Row? Doc McGhee. But this story isn't about McGhee and his outside interests, it's about Bach and life before Skid Row.
There are a lot of hard rock bands trying to make a living in Canada, especially the big
cities like Toronto, Edmonton and Van- couver. They survive by playing the usual venues but, with the passing of time, the
seasoned veterans slowly have to make room for the youthful contenders. Bach played in his fair share of bands, the last one prior to

Score puts together a new Flock Of Seagulls
Mike Score, founder, lead singer, chief songwriter, arranger and producer of A
Flock Of Seagulls, has put together a new band, signed to Jive/Arista, with distribution
in Canada by BMG Music. The original band racked up an impressive hit list in the early eighties with the release of their self -titled
debut LP. This popularity carried over to Listen, their second LP. Their biggest chart
successes are included on their current LP, The Best Of A Flock Of Seagulls.
The new band comprises Liverpudlian's lead vocalist Score, keyboardist Mike Railton
(from Keep It Dark) and drummer Jonte, bassist Mike Radcliffe (from Robert
Hazard's band), percussionist Kaya Pryor (from Pretty Poison), lead guitarist Ed
Berner and lead guitarist Dave Maerz, all from Philadelphia where the band is now
based.
The band has already played Moncton, New Brunswick's Little Rock Beverage
Room, and are firmed for The Spectrum in Toronto (Jan. 31), Brampton, Ontario's
Club Highlife (Feb. 2), Harpo's in Victoria (15), and Vancouver's Commodore (16).
crew had to fly down to New York City to interview me. I said 'Here I was living on the
same street for three years, and you have to fly to another country to talk to me.' It's just
kind of ironic. "I know so many guitar players and singers and drummers, who can play rings around a lot of established bands, that are
painting houses right now. They're turning thirty and it's over with. It's really sad. I don't know what the deal is with the music in-
dustry in Canada, but I hope this goes platinum or whatever, so some of my buddies
will get a break up there. There's a lot of bands that just can't buy a break though," Bach continues.
"I guess if the labels up there have a hit with Glass Tiger, then they'll sign a bunch of
bands just like Glass Tiger. It was really frustrating. In the early '80s I was in bands
that were drawing thousands, at $10 a head and no booze, and nobody really cared. I just
hope that someday the A&R people will realize musical aggressiveness is just as valid
and marketable as those bands appealing to people over thirty."
Now signed to a worldwide recording contract by Ahmet Ertegun, after this tour
with Bon Jovi the band is certain to be a household name among hard rock
neighbourhoods. Another thing will be certain if the Skid Row album does indeed
sell through, especially in Canada, in the months ahead; Bach will be able to get that
"break" for all his Canadian musician friends still struggling on the circuit.
"When you're in a band and you're twenty years old, it's just a dream come true
to walk into a record store and see your
Dark Light's Bunnett firmed for East 85th
Jane Bunnett, well-known jazz flautist and soprano saxophonist, has been firmed for a Feb. 14th to 19th engagement at
Toronto's East 85th. This is her first appearance since the release of her Dark
Light debut album, In Dew Time. Appearing with Bunnett will be jazz saxophonist Dewey
Redman, and Bunnett's own group which she co -leads with her husband, trumpeter Larry
Cramer. The other members of the band are keyboardist Don Thompson, bassist Scott
Alexander and Bob McLaren on drums. Redman, who is also featured on four of the
six tracks on Bunnett's album, has appeared, over the years, with many jazz greats in-
cluding Keith Jarrett, Ornette Coleman and Pat Metheny.
Bunnett's popularity as a jazz composer and arranger has led to several television and
feature film scores including the National Film Board's For Richer Or Poorer. The Jane
Bunnett Quintet is the first of such groups to be invited to perform at all five Canadian
jazz festivals in the same year. As well, Bunnett plays in Ladies Of Jazz with top Toronto female jazz artists Jane Fair
(saxophones) and Jill Hoople (piano) and Music In Monk Time, a group featuring the music of Thelonius Monk.

poster on the wall or to pick up Circus and

. . . it's very overwhelming," he con-
cludes. "But when you're working to get to that certain level, you're not really thinking
of it going gold or platinum, you're just psyched to see it go vinyl.
"There are no delusions though. There's nothing in the contract that says five million
kids are going to buy the album. That'd be nice, if you could get that written in
somewhere. But we're just going to have to go out there and give it everything we've got,
and that's the only way we're going to prove ourselves. But it is funny
. . . that it seems
you really do have to go somewhere else, and then come back, before you get any attention
at all."
Fairvlay pushes Butter with television campaign
What began, nearly four years ago as a simple plan to diversify corporate holdings in
Canada, has led to a major television campaign for Butter, a Quebec trio, and the
advertising of Melody, their debut album. The first phase of the campaign, according to
Regis Nadeau, the General Manager of Farvlay Productions, begins this month in Quebec and Ontario, in all markets, a
campaign that will be supported by a print campaign geared at retailers.
Butter is signed to Gilles Godard's Bookshop label, which is distributed in
Canada by BMG Music. The single, the title track of their LP, has just shipped. The
album, repackaged, following the band's name change (from Butterfly) last year, was
also released this week in all configurations. The second phase of Fairvlay's advertising
Butter (formerly Butterfly) campaign will include markets in the Maritimes and the Western provinces.
"It all started about three years ago," Nadeau continues, "when people wanted to
invest in Canada in different businesses, they and the president of Horus, the owner Harry
Lela, were staying at the Skyline Hotel in Toronto and the group was playing there. We
said, 'Well, this is something that could be a diversification, which we were not in yet.' So
we saw the group and said 'Well, we're look- ing for opportunities' and now we are where we are."
Showcases are planned in Montreal for mid -February and then in Toronto later in the year. Nadeau believes the timing is right for the band to break and, at least is willing to put his money where his mouth is; indeed a
rarity in the independent sector.

ANNUAL EXECUTIVE PROJECTIONS
1988 was a year to build both labels and actsThis past year was a building year for bothnew independent and established labels, anda year to expand and build on new andestablished acts. There was a heavyconcentration on concert and television datesfor recording acts, both domestically and onthe international scene, which paid off inimportant chart numbers.
While some independent labels directedall their energies on building their roster ofartists, others made moves into theinternational distribution and publishingfields. The new year already looks promisingfor internationally -distributed Cancon labelsand for Canadian distribution ofinternational labels, particularly in thejazz field.
There is a large delegation of Canadianindependent label owners and publisherscurrently in Europe, attending MIDEM '89 inCannes, France, the majority participatingthrough the Canada booth, established
1988 - Penta's first activeyear as an independentby John FordManaging Director - Penta EntertainmentWhile 1988 held a few quiet successes,it was, for the most part, not a banneryear, international-ly, for the industry. For Penta, it was ourfirst active year asan independentlabel. Raymond Maybecame the firstsigning and albumrelease. Towardsyear's end, AlfieZappacosta, one ofCanada's premieresinger/songwriters,came on board. The publishing branch ofPenta, Pentachord/Pentarch, secured a coupwith the acquisition of writer Jeff Neil. Neilcontributed a song to the current JimmyBarnes album which has sold over half amillion units for the Geffen artists inAustralia alone. Neil is currently downunder, writing with Barnes for the artist'snext album.
1989 has started off with a bang with theacquisition by Penta Entertainment Inc. ofthe Gaia/Gramavision line. Penta Disc hasbeen established as an arm of the parentcompany to distribute, market and promotethe New York -based jazz line. In conjunctionwith this, Penta Disc has also finalizedan exclusive licensee agreement for the soon -to -be -released Bill King album.
Our search for fresh new talent has alsoresulted in the recent scrambling of TheScramblers. This hard -edged Vancouver rock'n' roll band have been dubbed "the localheroes" and their debut album for the label isexpected early in '89.
Penta Entertainment Inc. looks forwardto a prosperous '89 and theopportunity to increase Canada'sinternational music profile.

George Fox, Balmur's most recentsigning, is off to a great 1989. In January, hewill be in Nashville for some co -writing withthe likes of Rory Bourke and Charlie Black, more touring with Randy Travis and moresingle releases from his debut LP. The newalbum should be released in the fall.

Ralph Quirino, Marketing Manager for Quality Special Products, reports good initial
programmer action on Lucille Starr's new single, Rock Steady Love, the third promo
only single taken from her Back To You album. This single follows The First Time
I've Ever Been In Love and the title track of the album. The new single, released on the
Nashville -based Cardinal label, qualifies as 3 -parts Cancon (MAL). Starr will be
' participating and performing throughout the 22 -hour Telerama telethon in Edmonton on
'January 27 & 28. BX-93's Coats For Kids a success story !This
year, London's BX-93 again mounted its Coats For Kids For Christmas campaign, and Sandi Vickerman, who is Promotions Coor-
idinator for the station reports that in the past seven years the campaign has distributed

close to 36,000 coats to needy children and adults throughout Southwestern Ontario.
Donated coats were dropped off at Sketchley Cleaners for cleaning and repairing, London's Memorial Boys and Girls Club
then handled distribution and once the club had reached the end of their distribution
