TheSignLife - Supporting the Deaf Community to Improve their Quality of Life

TheSignLife has always aimed to improve the quality of deaf people’s lives. We don’t only provide services for deaf people - we want to build the bridge between D/deaf and hearing people, to encourage integration and communication, in various ways. It is not only about one-way communication – learning from each other to develop skills, means for more effective communication both ways.

If you have seen the recent Oscar winning short film called “The Silent Child”, perhaps you already have an insight as to what it would be like with no way to communicate. Having empathy, knowledge and awareness, is important; you never know when you will come across a person with a form of deafness – it could be a family member, friend, colleague or even yourself.

Improving your communication skills, to meet the needs of a diverse range of deaf people, means not only signing in British Sign Language (BSL), but also communicating effectively, using other recognised methods. We can ensure needs are met in terms of the requirements that are outlined by the Equality Act 2010, in the work place or in wider society. Deaf awareness is useful for organisations and employees – if there is a deaf person within your organisation, it is beneficial for both parties that you are more aware and prepared to communicate more effectively with them, and also that the deaf person has equal access in the workplace.

We provide Deaf Awareness Training courses here at TheSignLife, which we can adapt and tailor to your working environment and needs, however big or small. We have a Deaf Trainer who will deliver the course, who has a wealth of knowledge and personal experiences that he is keen to share. We also provide Pre BSL-taster courses for those that are interested in learning basic BSL, before committing to a Level 1 course.

Do you like our new car?

I wanted to create a branded car tostrengthen our name awareness in our18th year. It has certainly caused a bit ofa stir!

With the little Fiat, well, It’s a bitdifferent. I thought about a mini but they’vebeen over used in estate agency or avintage Ford Capri.... like Jamie Oliver andJimmy Doherty use on their TV seriesFood Fight Club but I am no mechanic tokeep it running reliably and it would be abit long to park in small spaces!

Having driven around in the littleyellow machine since March, I am stunnedat the positive reaction. Some love itbecause ‘it’s that cute little yellow Fiat’,some say ‘blimey, we saw you coming’ andcar enthusiasts love it because ‘it’s anABARTH’ which has a great owners club. I’ve had and WOW! WhatsAppmessages and phone calls from clients,friends and other agents, people stoppingme in the street, and tooting their car hornand waving; children saying how muchthey love it, as well as triggeringconversations with people I had not yetmet. As people will see on the car bonnet,we have teamed up with SDL PropertyAuctions to offer home owners the option

of NO COMMISSION if selling by auction(call the number below for details).

We are also helping support the charityDonna Louise – Hospice Care for Childrenand Young People. Through SDL wedonate a small amount for each propertypurchaser fee through them and wouldwelcome any enquiries on how this‘modern method of auction online’ works.

The Cube in the Square Community Arts Group

is a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated

to enriching the community of Erdington

and all its inhabitants through art.

We hold various fundraising events to

support local and national charties, art projects; and offer regular and special event workshops on

various themes.

Our vision is that through art we can

ensure that all people in Erdington can have

access to experiencing, experimenting and

advancement in art - and simply enjoy the

sense of belonging that being part of our organisation, or

supporting it brings.

Our gallery and exhibitions showcase some of the excellent talent around Erdington. The public are welcome to view, enjoy and ask questions about the work.

Regular workshops and special sessions are held to o�er guidance, experience and a chance to develop skills.

Weekly sessions bring people together in unity. Our knitters often embark on special projects to help others; previous work has aided homeless and neonatal charities .

We have space to o�er for exhibitions and visiting arts groups for special events or performances

We regularly holdfundraising eventsfor local and national chairites.We also hold community events to bring the experience and enjoyment of art to all sectors of the community.

to enriching the community of Erdington

and all its inhabitants through art.

We hold various fundraising events to

support local and national charties, art projects; and offer regular and special event workshops on

various themes.

Our gallery and exhibitions showcase some of the excellent talent around Erdington. The public are welcome to view, enjoy and ask questions about the work.

Regular workshops and special sessions are held to o�er guidance, experience and a chance to develop skills.

Weekly sessions bring people together in unity. Our knitters often embark on special projects to help others; previous work has aided homeless and neonatal charities .

We have space to o�er for exhibitions and visiting arts groups for special events or performances

We regularly holdfundraising eventsfor local and national chairites.We also hold community events to bring the experience and enjoyment of art to all sectors of the community.

Local library gets an inside facelift!Erdington’s much loved library hasundergone a makeover in the lastcouple of months - and all due to itspopularity!

There are so many people comingthrough the doors these days that themanagement had to find a way to createmore floor space, as Assistant LibraryManager, Pat Pedder told us: “Thelibrary is busier than ever, so we werelooking at ways to create more spaceand modernise a little bit. Previously, thebook exchange and service desk areawas in the middle of the floor as youwalked in, but due to more customersusing the library, we were running outof floor space.”

The central reception area hasbeen moved sideways, and with newcarpeting and other decoration work, thelibrary inside has been transformed.

As Pat Pedder said: “Visitors to thelibrary are constantly telling us howgood it looks now, and it is greatlyhelping with the added footfall”.
