While preparing or while reviewing tests, always focus on the correctness of your approach and not on the accuracy of your answers.

TIP #1

Review your mock test before taking the next one. Reconcile answers to every question, including the ones you got right. You may discover a quicker/easier approach.

Don't wait for being fully prepared before you start taking tests. It is important to continually take full length tests at least once in a month initially, and more frequently as the exam gets closer. Real practice comes only from taking these full length tests, and you will also get to know your strengths and weaknesses more minutely. Take these tests as seriously as the real CAT

TIP #3

For a test x minutes long, spend at least 2x minutes in analysing it. One guideline is to analyse the questions you got incorrect first, the ones you left second, and the ones you got correct third. It's important to analyse the solutions of even the questions you did right- as you may get to know a newer, quicker technique of doing the same question (plus it's useful to understand your strengths/weaknesses).

Verbal section can best be improved by continual reading. It's extremely useful if you can form a habit of regular reading. Make it your aim to read at least one book every 2 weeks, and read the newspaper regularly (especially the editorial).

TIP #5

Page 7: 25 simple tips for CAT IIM exam - by MyOrangeSlate.com

For Verbal section, you could choose books from varied topics- light fiction, heavy fiction, psychology, physics, philosophy, politics, arts, sports etc. The habit of reading doesn't bring immediate results and so it is important to sustain it for long.

TIP #6

You can cover the headline of the editorial articles in the newspaper and try to guess the headline (at least the essence of the headline). This way you will increase your concentration while reading and also get better at understanding the gist of any article.

Prepare for each section every day. While CAT has two sections, you can divide it into broadly three: Quantitative aptitude, Verbal Ability, and Data Interpretation/Logical Reasoning. It's a good habit to spend equal amount of time on all three sections while preparing. This helps in making you used to switching from one type of questions to another quickly, and will ensure you don't ignore the section you like the least.

TIP #8

Never move your lips or your head while reading. Especially useful for Reading Comprehension questions, but useful for other types of questions as well. Moving your lips slows you down.

If Geometry is your weakness, try to apply the following three principles for any Geometry question, in that order: 1) Can you apply Pythagoras theorem for the

question? 2) Can you apply Similarity Principles? 3) Can you solve the question by angle related

formulae?

TIP #10

Page 12: 25 simple tips for CAT IIM exam - by MyOrangeSlate.com

Always remember, if any ‘inference’ is asked, it cannot be something already mentioned in the passage, even if it is true. Inference will necessarily NOT be a part of the passage in a direct form.

TIP #11

Page 13: 25 simple tips for CAT IIM exam - by MyOrangeSlate.com

Keep a diary to note down shortcuts and other insights you gain during your preparation. Keep a few pages separate for really interesting shortcut techniques and formulae, that you can revise on the last day or two before CAT.

TIP #12

Page 14: 25 simple tips for CAT IIM exam - by MyOrangeSlate.com

In Quantitative Ability, focus on the comprehension of the question – a thorough comprehension aids judgment and helps you choose to attempt the right questions. Comprehension can be improved by analyzing the data/information as you go on reading – clause by clause.

TIP #13

Page 15: 25 simple tips for CAT IIM exam - by MyOrangeSlate.com

140 minutes for 60 questions is sheer luxury compared to ‘good old days’ of CAT with 250 questions in 120 minutes. Yet mental calculations and creative approaches remain as important today – questions today require more elaborate approach and deeper comprehension, and the proactive thought process facilitates the attempts. (TWITs- Think Without Ink Tests at MyOrangeSlate are designed for this sole purpose)

It is advisable to make yourself familiar with the online format before taking the exam. Take some online mock tests to get yourself familiarized. MyOrangeSlate.com provides hundreds of such tests, including various full length tests. CATIIM.in also provides one free test to get you familiarized with the interface.

TIP #15

Taking unnecessary stress will not help you in the test. Also avoid last-minute discussions with your friends about your preparations as that will make you more nervous.

Identifying easy questions is a difficult task and comes only after practice. It depends on the aspirant’s own strengths and weaknesses. It is important to maximize your strengths. However, in the process, don't forget clearing cut-offs is essential to getting calls; doing well in one section and not clearing the cut-off in another is useless.

TIP #18

Try and understand why you want to do an MBA. Your reasons should be good enough to constantly motivate you during the preparation stage.

TIP #19

CAT is all about strategy. People who do well and go to the top IIMs are not necessarily the best at Maths or Verbal, but are good with CAT. You can evolve your strategy by taking multiple mock-tests. However, in the process of following your strategy, don’t forget that staying flexible on the day of the exam is equally important, as the exam could throw up some surprises (like one type of questions being much more tough than another.)

Once you clear the written exam, the next step is Group Discussions, Written Assessments, and Personal Interviews. It is important that you start preparing for these from much before the CAT results, because one or two months may not prove to be sufficient. This is true especially for those with poor communication skills or extremely poor general knowledge.

A few suggestions to take note when you start preparing for the GDs (Group Discussions): • Current debatable topics are a ‘must prepare’ • Start looking at both sides of any topic (because for a manager this skill is held in high importance) • Try to be very professional in your speaking style and while expressing your views • Try to participate evenly throughout and also give chance to others

A few more suggestions for the GDs: • Be polite and firm at the same time • Prepare facts very well as they form the logic of the arguments you shall give • Fluency in English and speaking correct English is vital here • Mind your gestures, they should not be rude or intrusive into other’s personal space • If you run out of valid points, try to add a new dimension to the discussion `

A few suggestions for the PIs (Personal Interviews): • Know about the institute and the place it is situated in, for which you are giving the interview • Know about the state as well as city to which you belong to and in which you have studied (which may or may not be different) • Know about at least 2-3 subjects quite well from your graduation • Know about your goals very clearly and manage to rope in the institute and the course (MBA) in it well CAT | GMAT | GRE | CMAT

TIP #24

A few suggestions for the PIs : • Know about current affairs and have opinions on the burning issues • Know about the management subjects already studied as a part of your graduation • Know about evolution of the Indian Economy (from 1991 liberalization to the present scenario in brief) • For girls especially: Know about some successful business women and their journey • Be prepared for questions like “Tell me about yourself” and “Why should we choose you”, prepare an answer covering a range of points
