Mission Office
Dear Friends,
Saint John Bosco was named “Father and Teacherof Youth” by Pope John Paul II. He had one desire – to spend his life working with the young. This wasachieved by employing a simple teaching method stillpracticed today. The Preventive System – based onlove and not punishment, with reason, religion, andloving kindness. We call this the Salesian Spirit.
Today, many Missioners, Volunteers, and Cooperatorspractice his philosophy with the continued interest andgenerosity of people all over the world.
May our combined efforts bring hope to thosein need. After all, Saint John Bosco is waiting for us inparadise.

The SALESIAN FamilyFrom the beginning of his work, Don Bosconeeded help. Thus he called upon numerouspeople of good will. Little by little the Sale sianfamily took shape: a tree with many branches.
Each has its specific characteristics, but allshare the same objective: to live the Gospel andto proclaim it to the young.
Salesians of Don Bosco, founded in 1859.Religious priests and lay brothers, who wantto carry out in the Church the project of theirfounder: to be signs and bearers of the loveof God for youth, especially the poorest. Todaythey are 16,000 in about 130 countries.
The Salesians Sisters of Don Bosco (or theDaughters of Mary Help of Christians); foundedin 1872 by Don Bosco and St. Mary DomenicaMazzarello, are active religious Sisters whofollow the same pastoral and educative projectas the Salesians. Today, they are 15,700 in89 countries.
The Salesians Cooperators. After the Society ofSt. Francis de Sales, Don Bosco founded, in1876, the Union of Cooperators. This unionconstitutes a vast international movement ofpersons who commit them selves to live in a
Salesian way, particularly by serving the young,in their work environ ments and in the localChurch. They are more than 100 in Canada.
The Past Pupils of Don Bosco, founded around1870. They are grouped into local associationsand united on the national and internationallevels. To be a Past Pupil means to live, in thestyle of Don Bosco, in simplicity, cheefulnessand family spirit.
The Don Bosco Volunteers were founded in1917 from the generosity of three young womengathered around Don Philip Rinaldi, 3rd suc ces -sor of Don Bosco.
The Volunteers are women, organized in aSecular Institute, who commit themselves towork in the spirit of Don Bosco while remaininginserted into their regular daily life. Since 1994,there exists as well a mas culine branch.
In the footsteps of Don BoscoMore than twenty religious congregations, mas -cu line and feminine, Secular Institutes andAsso ciations of lay people were at their requestofficially recognized as part of the SalesianFamily. All of them follow the Salesian Spi -rituality of Don Bosco.
Wide choice of religious pictures for interior (left).
PRIVILEGES OF THE MEMBERS:• Masses celebrated daily in perpetuity at
the Sacred Heart Basilica in Rome.• The members are united in the prayer and
apostolic work of the Salesians throughoutthe world.
THE SACRED HEART ASSOCIATION An Everlasting GiftAnyone, living or dead, may be enrolled in theSacred Heart Association.
The membership certificate, issued in an 8” x 6”leatherette album (photo), is an excellent giftfor a family in mourning as well as for a wedding, anniversary or any other special occasion. Weoffer a choice of colours (white, gold, navy blueand burgundy) and holy images.
The suggested offering is $15.00 for eachperson enrolled or $25.00 for a family enroll -
ment. A small part of this is sent to Rome forthe upkeep of the Sacred Heart Basilica. Thisbasilica was built by Saint John Bosco at theexplicit request of Pope Leo XIII. It wasconsecrated in May 1887.
The remainder makes up a fund used mainly forthe promotion and education of priestly andreligious vocations.
These offerings will help young men to followtheir calling to the priestly or religious life as
Salesians of Saint John Bosco, serving thepeople of God, especially the young.
