Customer Value with FlexPod SF

In many data centers, infrastructure is virtualized along a continuum from partial to complete. The

questions to ask today are “How can I better manage my infrastructure? What processes can

I automate? How can I build elasticity into my storage environment? How can I provide mixed-

workload applications to end users, no matter what their role is in the organization?”

The next-generation data center built on the FlexPod SF converged infrastructure helps you

transition your old data center from inefficient silos of technology to unified, dynamic environments

and resource pools, whether on premises or in public clouds. With its focus on service and

resource optimization, FlexPod SF allows you to shift time and budget from maintaining silos of

systems to innovating revenue-generating services.

Next-generation data center end users

■■ Cloud architects oversee a company’s cloud computing strategy, including cloud adoption plans, cloud application design, and cloud management and application monitoring.

■■ DevOps teams require agile, scale-up and scale-down capabilities that can be provisioned on demand, improving code development processes and enabling developers and IT operations to work together collaboratively and effectively. Connecting development and operations teams to automate and standardize the development process in the next-generation data center means faster time to innovation, accelerated time to market, improved deployment quality, better operational efficiency, and more time to focus on your core business goals.

■■ Line-of-business leaders focus on families of products or services and are responsible for large application programs that contain a number of integrated capabilities and tie into databases and database management systems. Their foremost requirement is a need for a highly available and predictable environment that can meet their business needs and corporate goals. At many organizations, line-of-business managers and staff make decisions to move mission-critical and often sensitive data to the cloud, and they may perform local installations without the knowledge of the corporate IT department, creating a “shadow IT.” The next-generation data center allows corporate IT to better serve these lines of business with applications that require predictable SLAs, reducing risk, gaining control, and ensuring better use of inefficient silos of resources.

Next-generation data center mixed workloads

■■ Web native applications require an environment to accelerate the delivery of cloud and enterprise applications and services to their end users. Many of these applications have unpredictable network traffic patterns, erratic data bursting, and inconsistent resource requirements. By providing an environment built on FlexPod SF, IT is able to provide a platform that can dynamically scale the infrastructure to handle these application behaviors and to serve the right application resources at the right time with predictable, scalable, and agile storage infrastructure.

■■ The database is often the weakest link in supporting enterprise applications. Heavy transaction loads drain the infrastructure resources, and scaling the database infrastructure typically demands significant application changes. Databases deployed on FlexPod SF can scale up instantly with the appropriate resources without any changes to the applications or database traffic, and it’s also easy to manage

connections to databases and applications.

Next-generation data center businesses

■■ These businesses can be categorized as service providers, telco, and next-generation enterprises, either cloud native or in on-premises virtualized enterprise environments. Infrastructure buyers in these businesses need to simplify and modernize their infrastructure and offer time to value while also supporting next-generation applications with enterprise applications and services. FlexPod SF enables your enterprise to scale and accelerate business performance, while minimizing risk and complexity.

Customer Reference – Safelite®

Safelite is an automotive glass and claims management company based in

Columbus, OH. Their business goal was to double their claims revenue and triple

their call volume within three years by offering superior claims management-as-a-

service to insurance companies. The FlexPod SolidFire solution hosting a remote

desktop application improved Safelite’s performance for an excellent customer

experience and ease of use, while delivering exponential scale-out technology for

agile growth.

FlexPod SF was deployed for the remote desktop project with 4,000 seats. The

project will eventually be 8,000 seats with scale-as-you-grow multitenant SolidFire

storage. This configuration will also be the building block for consolidating seven

disparate storage systems down to one in Safelite’s primary data center and for

the disaster recovery (DR) data center. High-performance compute, combined with

next-generation storage with SolidFire, is the foundation for Safelite’s differentiation

through a state-of-the-art claims processing center.

Page 8: 25:1 VDI efficiency ratios, just 1 benefit of converged storage

Benefits of FlexPod SF architecture for Safelite:

■■ Efficient granular scale. Node-based scaling means that Safelite can purchase what is needed, when it’s needed, and in smaller increments, unlike other solutions in the market.

■■ Consistent user experience. Safelite administrators can easily set dependable

minimum performance for a group of users, protecting VDI desktops from affecting

others. Having workloads in a multitenant highly secure environment on the same

FlexPod instance means doing more than VDI without affecting other workloads in

the same infrastructure.

■■ True global efficiencies. Safelite can cluster up to 100 nodes with consistent

efficiency. For VDI, desktop customers can expect efficiency ratios within the

range of 10:1 to 25:1.

■■ Simplicity of administration. By using the “no data locality” feature, Safelite

administrators don’t have to decide on which node and disk a volume LUN should

be provisioned. SolidFire manages the data placement with intelligent automated

data placement that optimizes distribution and protection of data across the

nodes in the cluster, and reduces risk by eliminating common errors.

Customer Reference – Web-Hosting Provider 1&1

As one of the world’s leading web-hosting providers, 1&1 makes serving adaptable

solutions to its customers a top priority. It serves Austria, Canada, France, Germany,

Italy, Mexico, Poland, Spain, the UK, and the United States. The company deployed

its 1&1 Cloud Server on NetApp SolidFire storage, eliminating performance lag

issues while giving customers unprecedented flexibility in choosing the type of cloud

needed to support their business.

1&1’s cloud solution was originally built on a traditional storage architecture from

a number of vendors. As part of this cloud offering, customers chose among

performance tiers, with each tier having a different architecture and price point,

rather than having access to a single solution with guaranteed performance. As

1&1 grew, it became clear that they needed to look beyond traditional storage. All-

flash, solid-state was the obvious choice to replace and consolidate the existing

cloud storage infrastructure. The company selected SolidFire as the only storage

technology that enables them to control performance levels for each and every

workload with zero disruption to customers. With compression technology, 1&1

could see significant cost benefits over other solutions. Additionally, with NetApp

Solidfire, each application has the resources it requires without impacting the

performance of other applications.

Business benefits that 1&1 realized include guaranteed performance for all of

their customers, reduced storage infrastructure complexity, improved flexibility

and performance for all cloud customers, and ability to easily scale out storage

infrastructure.

Proven Value

The highly flexible FlexPod SF solution enables you to align your business expenses

with business growth by reducing the initial capital expenditures. It delivers controlled

performance at reduced, cloudlike operating costs. When it’s necessary to scale out,

you can quickly and easily deploy without disruption. This solution also reduces the

need for specialized skills, saving time and helping reduce administrative overhead

costs. The solution’s management improves operation efficiency to give you the best

support possible for unpredictable environments.

Respond with Agility

Business can be unpredictable, and your IT organization needs to respond rapidly to

changing demands, without disrupting your business. By simplifying IT management

with automation and orchestration, FlexPod SF can be managed through the

VMware vCenter plug-in, Microsoft PowerShell, storage policy based management

(SPBM), and the VMware vRealize Suite. With these choices, IT can manage and

accelerate their deployments to reduce opportunities for human error, which can

cause delays or downtime. Additionally, the use of other management platforms

through the open API reduces management complexity in the environment.

Reduce Risk

FlexPod SF reduces risk because the solution has been tested and validated with a

Cisco Validated Design. This includes Cisco UCS blade servers to support virtualized

and nonvirtualized applications; Cisco UCS fabric interconnects to provide a single

point of management and connectivity for the computing domain; and Cisco Nexus

switches with support for 3.6Tbps of bandwidth to support the NetApp SolidFire

storage cluster for flexible scale-out capacity and performance.

Scale Performance Without Disruption

Dynamic programmability and the capability to add storage components

nondisruptively allows you to scale performance and capacity with no impact to

your applications. This increases quality of service (QoS) and leads to greater user

satisfaction, without the need to migrate data or interrupt I/O processing. FlexPod

solutions deliver 89% less unplanned downtime because there is no single point

of failure at any level of the infrastructure. The fully redundant and scalable fabric

provides seamless, hardware-based failover if any component fails at the physical or

virtual layer.

Enable Large-Scale Consolidation

With a high-performance infrastructure, you can consolidate more applications onto a single

FlexPod SF solution, with a balance of precise control and flexibility to meet your changing

business needs. The QoS capabilities inherent in SolidFire all-flash arrays eliminate 93% of storage

performance issues and remove “noisy neighbors”—virtual machines that monopolize storage I/O,

preventing other virtual machines from accessing their data and greatly slowing I/O performance.

This solution also accelerates time to value and innovation with faster and more consistent

response times across all your applications.

Provide Consistent and Balanced Delivery of Applications

FlexPod SF enables adoption of an integrated new data-center technology without slowing key

mission-critical business applications. You can scale your storage cluster incrementally and

seamlessly, and current applications can continue to run even as the business grows. IT can

essentially guarantee service-level agreements (SLAs) for applications, workloads, and tenants

across the infrastructure with confidence.

Competitive Differentiators

With FlexPod SF, IT can support multiple applications, clients, and tenants with the only granular-

scale, all-flash storage solution that delivers guaranteed QoS, combined with high-performance

Cisco UCS application servers that have more than 120 world-record benchmarks. The robust

combination of NetApp SolidFire Storage and Cisco UCS provides a resilient design with no single

point of failure at any level: compute, storage, or network. The SolidFire storage fabric scales and

recovers from node failure without disrupting running applications. The platform has APIs for 100%

programmable infrastructure to preserve business agility to automate every aspect of provisioning,

management, and reporting.

Cisco NetApp Advantage

Mixed Workloads with Server Virtualization

Mixed workload use cases on FlexPod SF can be exemplified by a major

manufacturing company that needs to consolidate its various virtualized applications

from LOBs in its overtaxed data center. Operations and support costs are soaring

as the IT infrastructure grows in size and complexity to support the business.

How can the manufacturing firm find a way to manage its costs without hindering

business? How can it support IT evolution, especially with advancements in IOT

and smart machines creating large data pools that need to be managed and

analyzed to support better business decisions? By standardizing on FlexPod SF, the

manufacturing company can successfully run multiple applications securely, with

application-specific requirements in a multi-tenant environment, and can collect data

from various IOT devices leveraging NetApp storage, with smart business analytics.

Service Providers

With an array of cloud offerings such as IaaS, PaaS, hosting SaaS applications,

DevOps sandboxes, managed hosting, and network VPN services, it is increasingly

challenging for a service provider to support its growth in an extremely competitive

environment, while dealing with aging IT infrastructure. In most cases, the service

provider’s assets are underused silos of wasted resources of compute, networking,

and storage. At the same time, other resources are overused and at a point of

collapsing, resulting in SLA failures to customers. Additionally, in the data center,

space, power, and cooling are at full capacity. By deploying FlexPod SF, the service

provider is able to create a data fabric with converged infrastructure to increase data

center efficiency and reduce provisioning times, decreasing time to build internal

IT environments and reducing from weeks to days the time required to deliver new

cloud or managed hosting services to their current and new customers.

DevOps

With DevOps workflow adoption, developers are leading the charge in writing

code that can create, store, manage, modify, protect, analyze, and reuse data at

a scale that was previously unachievable. FlexPod SF was designed for the next-

generation DevOps environment. When code is ready to be pushed out, storage

is often a forgotten, but crucial, piece of the puzzle to implement continuous

integration and deployment. FlexPod SF scale-out infrastructure, self-healing high

availability, guaranteed QoS, complete system automation, and in-line data reduction

are all essential elements for an agile, scalable, automated, and predictable

DevOps environment for better code development, accelerated testing, and faster

deployment.
