The COVID-19 emergency acted as a catalyst in ICT in education in Timor-Leste. Physicaldistancing regulations forced us to innovate and set up, in a matter of weeks, a series of distancelearning programs that would normally take several months to be conceived, developed andimplemented. The Eskola ba Uma initiative, developed by the Ministry of Education, Youth andSport (MoEYS) with the support of UNICEF and other partners, forever changed the way we thinkof ICT in education in Timor-Leste. It made us see in a new light not only the challenges associatedwith ICT in the country, but also the exciting opportunities that we are ready to explore. The conference will look at the ways in which ICT and innovation are transforming education. Itwill bring together a network of experts, professionals and key stakeholders that are committed topromoting ICT in education, capacity building and skills development in Timor-Leste and beyond.

ICT has the potential to accelerate change and increase economic development. It can modify theway we learn and teach, increasing students’ autonomy and accountability, expanding theirhorizons and improving their life prospects. However, several barriers still affect theimplementation of ICT-based or ICT-supported education programs in the country.

“Reimagine Education: ICT & Innovation in Timor-Leste” will allow us to share our experiences, learn from each other, explore potential collaborations and advance our collective ability topromote change through ICT and innovation in education.

The Ministries of Education, Higher Education, and Transport and Communications, TIC Timor, educational administrative staff, teachers, scholars, students, development partners, embassies, higher education institutions, digital influencers and private sector delegates will particpate in theconference.
