IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Registration: • All registration must be completed online EXCEPT for “Kindergarten: Here We Come!”

and non-residents. Non-residents of the district who are currently not open enrolled into our district, please contact Christine Dodge at the Elkhorn Area Middle School at (262) 723-6800 Ext. 1506 or [email protected] to obtain an online user id and password to complete online enrollment. Payment of the $187 out-of-district and other course fees may be mailed to the District Office at 3 N. Jackson Street, Elkhorn, WI 53121

• Students should sign up for courses for the grade level they will be enrolled in for the Fall 2020 semester.

• HOW TO REGISTER is found on pages 48-53 of this book. Cancellation:

• All courses are subject to site change and availability of staff. Some courses may be cancelled due to lack of enrollment.

Fees: • There is no registration fee charged to residents of the Elkhorn Area School District or

students enrolled in Elkhorn schools through the Open Enrollment program, however, some courses do have required materials fees.

• Each non-resident student will be charged $187 and any additional course fees that apply. Payment should be mailed to the District Office at 3 N. Jackson Street, Elkhorn, WI 53121. Non-resident students will be accommodated based on available space.

• Refunds – Full refunds will be given prior to the start of Summer Academy. No refunds will be given after June 12, 2020.

Attendance: • It is important to the success of this program that students honor the commitment to

attend the classes for which they have registered. Please notify the school at least one (1) week in advance if an unforeseen circumstance prevents your son/daughter from attending.

Lunch:

● The Summer Food Service Program Stresses the importance of offering nutritious meals to children during the summer months. The Elkhorn Area School District announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This summer, the Elkhorn Area Middle School will be serving free meals during summer school. Meals are provided to children regardless of race, color, national origin, age, gender or disability and there’ll be no discrimination in the course of meal service. To accommodate this opportunity for our students, buses will leave the MS at 12:30 after Summer Academy classes.

● The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides nutritious meals to children during the summer, when free and reduced-price school meals are typically unavailable. Free meals will be made available to children 18 years of age and under between 11:45 am and 12:45 pm. The

menu will be posted in early June on the food service website. ● Contact Ellen Leasure, Food Service Director [email protected] if more

information is required.

Busing: • Busing will again be provided to and from rural locations. Buses arrive at the High

School at 7:50 a.m., at Jackson Elementary at 7:55 a.m., and at the Middle School at 8:00 a.m. Buses will depart from the Middle School at 12:30 p.m., from Jackson Elementary School at 11:40 a.m., and from the High School at 12:00 p.m. (see pages 6 and 7 for the bus schedule).

• There is a shuttle service for Swimming lessons. • Bus service is provided by Durham Bus Company 262-723-7667 • For parents picking up their children at the Jackson Elementary School,

Kindergarten Here We Come classes are dismissed at 11:40 for transportation purposes.

Summer School & Swim Shuttle:

● At each time listed below, there will be a shuttle bus parked at the High School and the Middle School. Students will load at whichever school they are currently at, and that shuttle bus will then take them over to the other school. There will always be two buses running at the same time.

Health: • If your child has a health concern that may impact their participation in Summer

Academy, please contact your child’s Summer Academy teacher or the office no later than the first day of the session.

Allergies: • Please inform your child’s teacher in writing if your child has any type of food or

environmental allergy.

KINDERGARTEN: Here We Come! Welcome to the 2020 Summer Academy, held at the Jackson Elementary School. Students who will be 5 by September 1st can participate in Kindergarten: Here We Come! During this class students will participate in several different activities. This includes literacy instruction that will focus on naming letters, sounds of letters, rhyming, sight words, whole numbers, sets of objects, 2D and 3D shapes, and math vocabulary. It also includes Safety Town (June only), arts and crafts, healthy snacks, fun, social play and much more! Registration for “Kindergarten: Here We Come!” is PAPER OR online FOR THIS CLASS.

COURSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 1-4 MATH: NO-NONSENSE NUMBERS Grades 1-2 Students will use a variety of games and math manipulations to enhance their sense of numbers. Addition, subtraction, and two step problem solving are a few of the techniquest students will dig into as they tackle no-nonsense numbers. Focus is building students’ number sense to apply on.

COURSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 5-8 PE: GOLF - Grades 5-9 The goal is to promote the game of golf by focusing on etiquette and skill development rather than competition. This will be accomplished through both direct instruction and frequent practice on area golf courses. Please be aware that the majority of the courses that we will visit charge an additional green’s fees which must be brought to class on the days we travel. This class meets every day from 8-12. This class will NOT be for credit for the 9th grade students. Requirements to golf on the courses:

1. Student must have his/her own set of clubs (and golf bag), balls, and accessories.* 2. Student must be able to walk nine holes of golf keeping an adequate pace while carrying

his/her bag of clubs (student may bring his/her own pull cart). 3. Student must be familiar with hitting a variety of different golf shots.** 4. Student must have a basic knowledge of golf rules and etiquette. 5. Students are expected to have a personal desire to improve his/her golf game.

*Students should have a minimum of one wood, three irons (long distance = 3 or 5, mid distance = 7, chipping = 9 or W) and a putter. We encourage students to have at least 12 balls clearly labeled with their initials using a permanent market. Finally, students should have a pencil, small notepad, ball marker, and a several golf tees in his/her bag. While we will be working to improve students' golf skills with all shots, to be allowed on the course a student should be able to hit at least one club 80 yards or more on a consistent basis. They should also be familiar about hitting long and middle distance iron shots, as well as chipping with an iron. Finally students should be familiar with how to putt. Students will pay their green fees each time they travel to a golf course. We will learn about creating 3D images for the 3D printer, Painting with Spheros, Ozobots, general design challenges, Minecraft, learning the programs for the laser and creating things. ALL BAND IS HELD IN ROOM 155 (Band Room) 5th Grade Beginning Band Lessons – Course# BND5a This class is intended for students who will be in 5th grade in the fall. Lessons will be scheduled during band sign-up with Mrs. Schultz [email protected] (5th grade band instructor). No previous experience is required. 6th Grade Beginning Band Lessons – Course# BBND6a This class is intended for students who were not in 5th grade band this past school year, but would like to join the band at the Middle School in the fall. We will move at a faster pace than the beginning 5th graders. Students enrolled in this class have a lot of catching up to do. Payment of the $187 out-of-district and other course fees may be mailed to the District Office at 3 N. Jackson Street, Elkhorn, WI 53121. 1. Find a computer with internet access. Below are options if you don’t have one available:

- Matheson Memorial Library has computers available for use

- Find a friend or family member who will allow you to use their computer and internet.

- To make online payments the parent will need: Discover, MasterCard or VISA (debit or credit

card). Payments will post to the student’s account. All credit card statements will show the

payment has been made to the Elkhorn School District.

6. Click on #1 Bus Route and enter the bus route information, SAVE and CHECK “I have completed this

step” (in red). Click on “Next Step”.

7. Click on #2 Transportation and enter transportation information, SAVE and CHECK “I have

completed this step” (in red). Click on “Next Step”.

8. Click on #3 Summer School Emergency Contact and enter the emergency contacts, SAVE and CHECK

“I have completed this step” (in red). Click on “Next Step”.

9. Click on #4 SS Health and enter health information, SAVE and CHECK “I have completed this step” (in

red). Click on “Close and Finish”

10. Click on #5 Complete Summer Academy Registration.

11. Click on Complete Summer Academy Registration, Close and Finish.

12. Your registration has been successfully completed.

13. NOW you are ready to schedule your child’s courses for Summer Academy. Select

Schedule and click on the child and 2020-21 and what you are registering for, i.e.

summer academy, or swim. June classes will be the course number followed by the

letter “a”, for example the class Arts & Crafts is listed as ART12a for the June session.

July classes will be the course number followed by the letter “b”, Arts & Crafts is

listed as ART12b for the July session.

Click on the Request Courses for 2020-2021 in Summer Academy – K8 link

Select the course and click the Add Course button (there is a maximum of 4 – 1 hour classes).

All students must select 3 alternate classes per session that are different then the requested classes. For alternate requests click on the Request Alternates tab Highlight any alternate classes and click Add Courses, your alternates are listed 1-4, you can prioritize your alternates. Your regular requests are signified with an “R” in the selected column. Once you have selected the courses you can close the Course Request screen. Schedules will be created based on your requested courses and should be completed by April 30th.

The Elkhorn Area School District has a payment system, Fee Management, which is linked to the Skyward Family Access screen. 14. Once student schedule has been finalized you can make a payment to your account. Schedules will

be listed in family access under the schedule tab. Parents can check back after April 30th to make payments. All payments must be made on or before June 12th, before the start of Summer Academy. Click on Fee Management. Choose the student you are scheduling classes for and select “Make a Payment”. Summer Academy Courses and Summer Swim must be paid separately.
