We have invited you to watch the program “Who am I to Judge?” series for our Faith Formation as a community. It is an eight-session series that shows us a way of how
to respond to the widespread relativism happening in our soci-ety today. We live in a society that supports the opinion that each person should make up his or her own morality—that there is no moral truth that applies to everyone. Maybe some of us wonder whether there really is an absolute right and wrong for everyone. Or maybe we accept that there is a moral standard for all, but we don’t know how to explain our moral convictions in a convincing way. Maybe some of us are afraid of saying something is immoral because we’re afraid of of-fending others or of being labeled intolerant. How do we talk about morality in a relativistic world?” These questions are what the series are going to answer for us. Session 1 is entitled: “Don’t Impose Your Morality On Me!” In this session, it defined relativism as a philosophy that there is no truth, that each person determines his/her personal truth. To respond to this worldview, we cannot only use logical argu-ments but we must answer it with both love and logic. Morality is not limited to “moral moments” in our lives where we ask: “Is this right or wrong?” It is about who we want to become and how do we get there. Imagine that it’s your funeral. What would you want your friends and family say about you? For most people, we would like people to say something about our relationships (he was a great father, she was an amazing friend) or say something about our good qualities or virtues (he was very generous, she is hardworking). This tells us that our moral life is geared towards an ultimate purpose or end.
As such, our moral choices should be guided by who we would like to be, that is, achieving that end or purpose in our life. This series is found in our FORMED platform and you can watch it there. If you haven’t registered yet, I encourage you to do so. It is free and it contains a lot of spiritual resources for us to grow in our faith. More information is in the bulletin.
Thanks, Fr. Rodel

Gospel Reflection The 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time
September 23rd—Mark 9:30-37
Mark paints a vivid picture in today’s Gospel. Having ar-rived at Capernaum, Jesus and his disciples enter a house. In this private place, Jesus asks his disciples about the ar-gument they had while they were journeying. Again, the disciples are uncharacteristically silent and afraid to an-swer. They have been found out. Jesus then summons the Twelve, whom Mark identified earlier in his Gospel as those chosen by Jesus to preach and to drive out demons. To this select group of disciples, Jesus teaches that those who would be first in God’s kingdom must be servants of all.
Conversations such as the one described in today’s Gospel are common in family life. Perhaps these examples are fa-miliar: “I should get the first piece of cake because I am the youngest;” “I did the dishes yesterday; someone else should do them today.” How might we respond if Jesus asked about our family arguments? What would Jesus say to us in reply? All of us need the reminder found in today’s Gospel: To be great in God’s Kingdom is to be the servant of all.
Request a Bequest In estate planning, we consider our family’s needs first.
One way to ensure their security and to create a legacy at Holy Family Parish is to consider gifting a percentage of
your estate or of an asset. This way, your gifts are propor-tional to loved ones and to institutions you cherish, like
Holy Family. Your bequest can make a big impact. For more information, please call Rebecca at
503-774-1428 x103 or [email protected].
(The lime tablecloths were returned. Thank you!) Please check your homes to see if you forgot to return red-checked tablecloths belonging to Celebration Hall. If found, please bring either to Celebration Hall or the Parish Center as soon as possible.
