My Dad’s Dress HatShort true story about how a Dad’s hat impressed othersby HowARD McHEnRy, P.P.

My Dad was born September 25, 1892. He always wore a dress hat size 7¼ long-oval when he went to church, attending public events or any place where it was proper. Dad

was a farmer in the 1930’s and wore overalls and a straw summer hat throughout the day when caring for crops and feeding his hogs and chickens. When Dad would leave our house to be in public he would put on a long sleeve shirt, neck tie and install his dress hat. That was his forte all through life. Dad always looked neat, im-pressive and was a very proud man although he was a poor middle class individual.

When Dad wore his dress hat it made him feel ac-cepted like fortunate folks and perhaps allowed him to forget the horrible depression and hard times living on the farm. In the 1930s men wore dress hats to ice cream socials, baseball games, football games, social events, parade’s, picnics, even when stand-ing in line for free soup during the Great Depression. Take a look at any old photo before the 1960s and you will see nearly every man in some kind of hat whether he be a rich man, poor man, laborer or a kid. A good quality hat was a symbol of pride.

My Dad worked hard all through his early life. After the Great Depression he regrouped, found work allowing our family to improve quality of life. When in his fifties, Dad became suc-cessful in business and died at age 63, much too early because of a severe heart condition. All during his lifetime Dad did not become wealthy but when he dressed up he looked like a million dollars. People in the county called him Uncle John. He was greatly respected and noted for his musical skills and positive personality.

Dad met my Mother in 1910 when he played a barn dance in Platte County, Missouri. During the 1920’s - 1930’s he played a 37 string autoharp (Zither) in Uncle Pat’s Fiddling Fools Band. One Moment of Your Time, Please!

October was one fast month! November is also going to be fast-paced, too, as we have both the Circus and Ceremonial coming up. We will also be putting

up Temple Christmas decorations in November.Nobles, the Circus and Membership are Ararat’s two

biggest fund raisers. Let’s get behind both the Circus and Fall Ceremonial so we may build a strong future for Ararat Shrine.

I would also like to take a moment to thank the office staff, the restaurant staff, our Chief Aides John Nelson and Richard Floyd along with their lovely ladies Sherrill and Linda, all of the 2015 Potentate’s Aides, the Director and Assistant Director of Uniformed Unites, Director of Shrine Clubs, Assistant Director of Shrine Clubs and the 2016 Di-van for all of their hard work and dedication this year, it is much appreciated.

A very special thank you to Steve and Jerri Dowdy for all of the wonderful pictures!Nobles, these are “Get R Done” kind of people…

A Big Salute to Ararat’s Legion of Honor…

The Legion of Honor was organized in 1952 to accommodate all eligible ex-service men and veterans of the Armed Forces who were members of Ararat Temple in good standing, for comradeship and fraternity, and to encourage and promote activities appropriate for ex-ser-

vice men, and to support the Shrine.Today the Legion of Honor is still an active unit that provides the Color Guard at the opening

of our monthly stated business meetings, and participates in parades. The pride they have for their country and the Shrine shows in the eyes of every member of the Unit.

Veteran’s Day commands our overwhelming respect and honor for the young men and women who have served and are serving overseas. And for those thousands of killed or wounded, we re-member a debt that can never be repaid… BUT SHOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

Hospital Van Drivers

As a Noble of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to get involved with the work of our fraternity. Our Hospital Transportation Club is the tip of the spear in the effort to help our kids. We strongly encourage you to call the Hospital Trans-

portation Office at (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and join the elite team of Nobles who transport our children to our NEW St. Louis Hospital. We encourage every Noble to become a driver and to experience the life changing effect of working with the younger and the weaker. We need office workers and drivers so regardless of ability, all can lend a hand. We extend a BIG THANK YOU to the Drivers who transported children last month!

Shriner’s Hospital St. Louis Board ofGovernors Reportby wAynE sPEnCER P.P. AssoCiATE boARD MEMbER

At this time of Thanksgiving, I thought it would be nice to report some positive things com-ing out of the St Louis Shriners Hospital. I will be quoting a statement from the World Pediatric Project Program Staff regarding their mission and the Shriners Support. I will

also include some pictures from patients expressing their thanks. This is a wonderful example of cooperation between a World Organization and the Shriners Hospital network.

This is addressed to the Hospital Staff and Board of Governors. And I quote: “Thank you for partnering with World Pediatric Project to provide for our international

patients. This fiscal year (July 1 2014 to June 30, 2015), World Pediatric project brought 80 chil-

dren to the United States for critical care (39 to St. Louis) and sent 452 medical missions to our partner countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Several of your staff are vital members of these missions.

Shriners Hospital was instrumental in the life-changing care of 21 WPP patients this year, all who now have a brighter future and restored childhood because of your care.

The children we help have no access to the necessary pediatric critical care resources in their home countries. WPP’s partnership with Shriners Hospital and its medical staff is essen-tial to fulfilling our mission and facilitating treatment for children suffering from congenital defects, illness and injury.

We look forward to continuing and strengthening our partnership.” End Quote.May you all have a Happy Thanksgiving.Until next time.

Nobles! Ladies! Are you interested in Ballroom Dancing? How about other kinds of dancing? If you are interested, then please join the “Union Station Ballroom Danc-ers” Facebook group or email [email protected]. That way we can open up a discus-sion about when to meet, what we want to do with the club, and much, much more!

Nobody Told Me!by sTEVE DowDy

OK! Here we go again! Another month when I have absolutely nothing to say. Guess I’ll just have to make it all up!

We are going to have a Circus, but it may be over by the time you read this. I know I will have fun, I know I’ll be worn slick, and I know a lot of other people will have a great time. There are few things that are more pleasing to me than to see a whole auditorium filled with young people, all having fun. Of course, they won’t all have fun at the same time, but they will certainly all have fun at some time.

We’re going to have a Ceremonial on November 21, and there will be a Show and Tell recruit-ing session that same evening in Bennett Auditorium. That’s where all the Units and Clubs each try to convince the entire class to join their organization. Some will join on the spot, but most will want to look around before they commit to any one group. WE might have to call those guys and invite them to some meeting or dinner or party. And we must remember the fellow’s wife; because if she likes us, he’ll like us. And, please talk to every new Noble and Lady. Make them feel wanted and welcome. I don’t know of any organization that has more members than it needs, so, make an effort to get someone, or several someone’s.

On December 19, we’re going throw a Christmas party for a bunch of kids. I knew a man once who said he just couldn’t stand to spend that much time around that many kids. I thought we should dress him up and make him play the Grinch. Lucky for us, there’s only a few like that, and most of them stay in their cave. I like to see the happiness on the people’s faces, and I really like to see the kid’s faces when they see Santa Clause.

I can’t understand why some people seem to dislike the Shrine. I saw a notice of the Impe-rial Session we’ll host in 2020, telling us we’ll bring 20,000 people and close to $20,000,000 to Kansas City. The first comment on the piece was “All those men in their little cars will make a real mess of our traffic.” That may not be an exact quote, but it’s close. I talked to another man once upon a time who said he didn’t like Shriners, but he sure liked our hospitals. I once knew a man that didn’t like Marilyn Monroe, either. What a terrible way to spend one’s life! If those people would get to know the facts their opinion would surely change.

I almost forgot that November 22 is the day that our Potentates Aides, and their helpers, will decorate our temple for Christmas. I’m pretty happy about that, too. I’m undoubtedly sentimental, or something, but I sincerely enjoy Christmas decorations and carols. I know of at least one of our Ladies’ groups that will be helping some less than fortunate family, and I’m sure that a lot of other groups will do likewise. I hope I can find a way to make some family a little bit happier this season, and I hope our fraternity can make a lot of kids happier, too. And, I wish all my friends, whatever their religion, culture, race, or whatever, the same joy and happiness that I will feel throughout this holiday season.

Hospital Transportation Newsby biLL wARREn

Your Ararat Shrine Hospital Transportation club is hard at work insuring the safe transport of children to the various Shrine Hospitals across the nation. While we predominantly use the new St. Louis hospital we will use any hospital in our network that may offer the specialty

the child may need. Just before Temple meeting in October our club met and held election of officers. We are

proud to announce the following Nobles of Ararat were elected to leadership positions within the club.

Our New President will be Noble Ronald Griep, who is an eight year veteran of our shrine and will do an excellent job in leading our club. Noble Joel Semler will be our next Vice President and will capably stand in when our president is unavailable. Joel has been a member of Ararat for over three years and is a leading member of our club.

Just like in many Blue Lodges our Secretary Treasurer comes possessed with a wealth of experience. Noble Bert Torrey will carry on his years of excellence as the scribe and financial manager for our club and we are delighted to have him in this capacity. Bert not only man’s our of-fice one day a week but has twenty nine years as a member of Ararat and is a fifty year mason. The Hospital transportation club is indeed fortunate to have men of this caliber at the helm.

By the time you read this November 6th will have passed but on this night our club will hold its first ever club wide banquet. We will gather at Ararat and share our fellowship, laugh with our brothers and remember those who are now journeying on their last drive. Awards will be given out, friendships strengthened and the bond of brotherhood will be renewed. As proud members of this club, we invite you to join us. Nothing is as memorable as when a child who has endured much takes the time to thank you for your help in the healing process. We need men who can work in our office (9:00 – 2:00) one day a week. We need additional drivers to handle transport of our young charges. Are you able to contribute to the healing of our kids? I promise you the time will be well spent. Call our hospital transportation team to learn how. (816) 923-5429

Please report to Buck Johnson in Bennett Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. on your scheduled night. Directors or Presidents, if you are not able to fulfill the assignment, please contact the Temple Director, Tom Burke at 816-810-8216 so that he can finda replacement for your unit or club.

As late as the 1950s men wore dress hats to work, to social events, sporting games and everywhere they would travel. Without a hat was without a home.

A few years after Dad died I was an automobile salesman and wore a coat, tie and dress hat to work. When going outside to show a product I always installed my hat. That was part of sales courtesy and the customer expected us to be polite and look presentable. In those days a quality salesman was expected to meet certain dress standards or would soon be replaced.

One day I looked in the closet, carefully removed my Dad’s dress hat from the box and put it on for good luck. Dad’s old hat had faded a bit but every time I look at it, it brings back fond memories of yesteryear and Dad’s old hat just fit me! As I looked into the mirror to admire myself in his hat it came to me that I should wear it to work as if I was taking Dad to work with me on this nice fall day. I brushed off the hat with a soft touch, made sure my neck tie was perfect, put on my dress coat and greeted my family with a good morning to all and drove off into the morning sun.

When making the thirty-minute drive to work I thought to myself, I am going to introduce my Dad’s hat to sales methods I learned from him when I was a kid. I was always impressed how Dad could talk to a stranger, make them feel important and close a sale that others could not do. He offered a great smile, firm hand shake, was always prepared, had good knowledge of his product, was honest and never pushed anyone to do something they did not want or should not do. Dad was something very special!

Dad was his best when leaning on a fence talking to a hard-nose farmer about leasing their property for the purpose of drilling gas wells. I never saw my Dad make a sales presentation with-out a hat. I was excited and was looking forward to my day at work with Dad’s hat supporting me. “Step aside folks for here I come and if you were a qualified buyer you were going to experience the best sales presentation you have ever encountered.”

I was first introduced to sales as a young lad during the time Dad operated a gasoline service station and garage. Dad had a bad heart condition and by me helping him serve customers, it al-lowed him to rest and over see my work. We had three eight foot gasoline pumps each having a pump handle on the side that allowed a person to pump back and forth so gasoline could be trans-ferred from three large underground storage tanks to the three round glass containers that each held ten gallons of gasoline. White gas was a clear color like water and sold for 11¢ gallon, regular gas was orange color and sold for 13¢ gallon and ethyl gas was red color and sold for 15¢ gallon. There were no electric gas pumps at the time so after selling the gas we had to hand pump and force gasoline back into the ten gallon container.

A quart of oil sold for 15¢, water for the radiator was free as was airing up the tires. The first thing Dad told me to do when a customer drove up was to greet them and wash their windshield. He taught me to ask the customer if I could check their water level in their radiator, oil level in their engine and air up their four tires all before I would asked them how many gallons of gas they wanted to buy. There would be times customers would ask for water in their radiator, air in their tires and buy nothing.

I was a short kid and stood on a wood box so I could wash their windshield. Most likely be-cause of the courtesy extended to them the customer would ask for more gallons of gas than they first intended to buy. Dad had the most friendly and best service station operation in the county and I got a hands-on sales education. Dad wore his dress hat every day at the station.

Dad taught me when meeting people to first provide eye contact, smile, provide a firm

handshake, bow to a lady, apply proper manners and gain their trust. His approach was to identify their needs, their desire and then lead them to a trusty conclusion. The objective was to provide the best sales experience they have ever had so to encourage the customer to want to buy the product from you. Trust and service is the clue to success!

I really gave Dad’s dress hat a good run that day. The thought of him being a part of my day motivated me to plan my day to be the best I could be. I continued to have thoughts of providing customer satisfaction and that soon elevated me to be the top sales person at the agency and in the region. Thanks to my Dad and his old dress hat, his silent input energized me to challenge new goals and my dream to become a GM automobile dealer.

Great national leaders wore quality hats when making presentations. Perhaps Abraham Lin-coln was the most impressive President of the United States to wear a hat. At every major speech he wore at tall black hat. President Harry S. Truman seldom went anyplace without a dress hat. The President could be seen after leaving Washington DC wearing his hat when he took walks in Independence. So why do men not wear dress hats today?

When John F. Kennedy was elected President, he wore a formal tall hat for a few ceremonies and at parades but seldom wore hats after that. The Kennedy’s had thick hair and they felt no need for a hat. Soon after many dress hat companies began to suffer and go out of business. It became hard to find a quality dress hat anywhere. Later clothing designers made hats that looked different but nothing like the dress hats we were accustomed to.

In the late 1960’s only a few restaurants and business establishments offered hat hangers for those who wore a hat. The downturn of not wearing a hat during the winter was that men got head colds and got sick because they were too casual thinking to wear a quality dress hat. That is ok because medical doctors loved their business! They helped to stimulate the national economy.

Today’s fashion seems to rely on what designers create and do however, when certain celebri-ties or famous individuals start changing their style, the general public will soon follow. A current trend is for men to have facial hair. Perhaps that will also be discouraged and will not be in style.

I admire my Dad and others who survived the Great Depression, the most difficult economic times our country has ever experienced but they still found a few dollars and cents in their pockets to dress properly in a coat, long sleeve shirt, neck tie and a dress hat that made them look like proud Americans. My Dad really needed a hat for when he was nineteen years old he had scarlet fever and lost all of his hair leaving him with only one single hair on his head. His grandkids enjoyed taking turns to trim that one hair.

Today’s society can learn from our ancestors. One must remember people who are successful or wish to achieve greatness most likely will depend on their personality, reputation, character, cre-dentials and who they know that can help them to succeed. A good impression with high level ex-ecutives or those who are hiring can be critical resulting in you being hired, rejected or eliminated. How you apply your manners, how you look, smile, act, walk, talk and conduct yourself during the interview is important. A first good impression can set you aside from others, allowing you to get your foot in the door and succeed. We should all take a good hard look in the mirror and be very honest with the result of our personal self evaluation.

“If you were the president, CEO or hiring manager of the company you would be seeking employment, would you hire yourself?”

Why not buy a good quality hat and think about that!

Pink wines are probably the least popular wines on the market today. They started going out of favor in the 1970’s, so, it’s about time to bring them back into favor. Red wines made from the Zinfandel grape just weren’t masculine enough for real men, and the ladies learned

to drink whites for similar reasons. Many producers even uprooted their Zinfandel vines. One winery managed to develop a market for rose’ wine simply making a pink Zinfandel and calling it “white Zinfandel.”

Rosé wines are made like any red wine, except that the juice s drawn from the vat while it is still fermenting and before it has had the chance to absorb too much color from the skins. Then, the winemaker can let it ferment just a little longer and bottle it as a semi-sweet rose’, or let it con-tinue to ferment as though it were a dry white.

Rosé wine made by either method is unlikely to go into a new oak barrel, and nowadays is almost certainly fermented and stored in stainless steel vats before being bottled within a few months of the harvest. Only a few highly exceptional rose’s improve with age. Most are best drunk as soon as they are bottled.

It can be difficult to determine if a pink is going to be sweet or dry before you buy it. But you can probably assume that a California pink wine labeled rosé will be drier than one labeled as white.

I just recently returned from the 2015 Shriners International Membership Seminar. While there were many topics discussed the most important is membership growth. I have taken a look at Ararat Shrine’s numbers and if the current trend continues, by 2020 our membership will be

at or around 1,500 Nobles. We are currently at 2,449 Nobles. As you can see, we are facing a problem. It’s one that we can solve, but it will take all of us. I’m asking that each Noble reach out to those you now in our Blue Lodges and introduce them to the Shrine. In Missouri, there are approximately 39,000 Master Masons and about 35% or 13,650 of those are Shriners. There is room for growth.

At last month’s Temple Meeting I announced the formation of the ‘Shrine Membership Ac-tion Renewal Team’ or ‘S.M.A.R.T.’. The intent of this team is to provide a forum for our No-bility to share ideas for new Clubs, Units and events. One of the major tenets of this team is providing a culture of open communication. Rod McGrath and I moderated the proceedings. We had a moderate turnout, but it was lively. Many suggestions were made and several items we are moving forward with. Our next meeting is scheduled for November 30th in the Temple Library. Please plan on attending.

The Lee’s Summit Family Fun Run was a big success and I want to thank everyone who helped make it happen. The Fall Ceremonial is coming up on November 21st, 2015. Be sure and mark your calendars. You need to get your petitions in so they can be read by the November 11th Temple meeting. I also want to remind you that we have a Membership Meeting scheduled for November 10th. We are ALL a vital part of Membership, come join us.

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

The year will quickly be coming to an end and packing day will be on the 4th Tuesday in November. On pack-

ing day, we will pack boxes with the items we have made and send them to the kids at Shriner’s hospitals. Please come join us at Needle Guild. We need all the help we can get to make as many items as possible to send for the children.

Don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets for a chance to win the beautiful quilt our ladies made. The quilt that will be given away in December and the money collected from the raffle will be given to Ararat Tem-ple. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. See a Needle Guild member for your ticket.

We sew, visit, make new friends and have lunch at each meeting. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium. We are looking forward to seeing you at the next meeting.

Sedalia Shrine ClubWhen your membership includes volunteers with a can do spirit, leadership that recog-

nizes volunteerism and knows how to coordinate the efforts of dedicated volunteers to achieve a common goal. You have a recipe for success. We are THE SEDALIA

SHRINE CLUB. We thank our creator and ask his blessings for all our endeavors as we pursue our philanthropy of “Children with Special Needs”.

For all our volunteer members, our beautiful and dedicated ladies and our friends who share their time and efforts for “our children” and our patrons, pat yourselves on the back and thank those who helped us make this year’s Fair stand the best ever. Give Bobby Rinehart a lot of credit for coordinating this massive endeavor and be proud of all the sacrifices we all made for eleven days to keep the Sedalia Shrine Club dream alive. Each of you is truly special!

For each of you, who helped with “the Campers” and the International Harvesters, know that you achieved the same success and it could not happen without YOU! Special Thanks again to Bob Rinehart for your coordinating talents. Thank you Don Weaver for your equipment and vol-unteerism in making our fund raising endeavors the success they are.

Special Thanks goes out to Sedalia Food and Vending for your help and volunteerism. For our Brother Nobles and Ladies from Marshall and all of our neighboring clubs, our deep and sincere appreciation goes out to each and every one of you. The Sedalia Shrine Club thanks you!

Our Ladies once again held their yearly golf tournament (Chicks with Sticks) and had a good turnout. It looked to us like a lot of fun was had by all the golfers! Thank you to Pat Rinehart and our Shrine Club Ladies for all your time and effort in making this year’s tournament a successful event. Pat would like to thank all of our people who participated in this tournament and those who helped in all facets of the tournament’s operation.

Our Fun-Kor is still strutting its stuff and our latest parade was the Versailles Applefest. We had a great crowd and had a lot of fun. Just a reminder to our members, our Veteran’s Parade in Sedalia will be November 11th quite naturally in Sedalia! Don’t forget our monthly break-fasts. Our next breakfasts are November 7th and December 5th. They start at 7:30am and run to 10:00am. You get a great breakfast for $6.00! If you can help in the Kitchen or make deliveries, your volunteering spirit is sincerely needed and deeply appreciated. Thank you for patronizing our fund raising breakfast as well!

Our Golf course is closed for the season except for our yearly and lifetime members. Thank you Bill Hammerly, Rich Myers and all of our great volunteer help who are paramount in keep-ing our cost down. Don’t forget to patronize our bar. It is open from 3:00pm to 10:00pm and our President, Roger Vieth and his staff will always try to accommodate you! While we are doing our “don’t forgets”, let’s not fail to remember our sick and disabled. Pray for them and never forget those who serve this great nation. Pray for them continually.

If you want to be a part of the fun our monthly meeting will be held on November 23rd, at the American Legion on 7 Hwy. in Blue Springs MO. Please join us and be our guest. If you have questions call Noble Jim or his Lady Gail Gargotta at 816-228-2401.

1984 to 2015Celebrating Our 31st Anniversary

Lafayette County Shrine ClubRon ELLing, sCRibE

The Lafayette County Shrine Club meeting was held October 8 at the Higginsville Masonic Lodge. There were 8 Shriners and ladies present for the meal, which included baked chick-en, mashed potatoes and gravy, scalloped corn, mac, cole slaw, and an assortment of desserts

prepared by members of the Higginsville Masonic Lodge. President Tim Rechterman welcomed Marshall Donnie Fowler and Ambassador Alvin Kallenberger and members and their Ladies of the Lafayette County Shrine Club. The cooks including Doug and Liz Harvey and Jack Padley were thanked for the wonderful meal!

President Rechterman presided at the meeting. W.N. Gray was not in attendance so there weren’t minutes of the September meeting. Bernie Miller gave the treasurer’s report. The trea-surer report was approved by the members.

Ambassador Kallenberger shared upcoming event information from Ararat Temple. He had Mom and Dad Circus pins to sell. Help is needed for the Festival of Champions at Warrensburg on October 17.

Marshall Fowler shared information about the Ararat Shrine Circus to be held from Novem-ber 12 to the 15. He also shared information about the November 21 Ceremonial. There should be around 30 that will be going through the Ceremonial.

The next meeting will be moved to November 19 since the regular meeting would have been during the circus. It will be held at the Higginsville Masonic Lodge.

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

We will be at Ararat on the 15th playing for the

Ceremonial. This is a fundraiser for the Temple socome on out, enjoy some good music and help theTemple with your donations.

And, of course, we love playing at the WarsawShrine Club’s pre parade party on June 4th. We have asmuch fun as they do and really enjoy playing for all ofthe Ladies and Nobles.

ORIENTAL BANDBy Dave Wilbanks, Scribe

Well, here we are in the month of May, which means

the parade season has started. Hope that everyone had

a good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. In

March, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.

rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome.

He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play,

however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.

Art had said before we got started that his grandson

was here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that we

might have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-

ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. He

passed away at the young age of 100, a milestone

which he turned last August. All our prayers and good

wishes go out to the rest of his family. He was one

Noble that stood out above the rest in every way possible.

He is truly missed.Next we have a little bit about the O.B. Spring

Dance. It may not have been the best turnout we have

ever had, but President Waco still did an outstanding

job. He made sure that those who did make it really

had a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” to

our President. And let’s not forget our ladies for

having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Waco

and the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’s

see! It was reported that our President Waco, who also

plays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratch

his back with one hand and continue to play well with

the other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcome

back Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to England

for a little while but had to come back because he did

not have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that he

was having a great time over there with his wife, and

got to go and see his son as well. So all in all the trip

may have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.

had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from the

pop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco would

just like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't have

done it without us. Saturday was the best day. It was

crowded but we all managed to make it through.

Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout.

So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of the

nobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hope

to see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

Ladies Oriental Shrine of North AmericaTarrara Court #83by LADy RACHEL AuLguR, HigH PRiEsTEss

Team work – working together, as a team, for one common purpose. When all players of a team work well together and remember there is no “I” in team, many wonderful things will be accomplished. When two teams work together – Ladies of Tarrara and the Nobles of Ara-

rat – imagine the amazing things we can accomplish for our Shrine Children. The Ladies of Tar-rara Court are happy to work in collaboration with the Nobles of Ararat and encourage all to work even harder for our children in our Shrine Hospitals. After visiting three of our twenty-two Shrine Hospitals for Children, I have witnessed our hard work in each Hospital I have had the privilege of visiting. It still amazes me when I see both of our Fezzes on display. Team Tarrara and Team Ara-rat are stronger than we realize! Once you visit one of our Hospitals, you will forever be reminded of our purpose, working for the needs of our Shrine Children.

The Ladies of Tarrara Court welcomes and invites all ladies to join our fabulous organization and become a member of the best philanthropic organization there is – The Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America. Our purpose is to support our children in our Shrine Hospitals by giving of our time, items and donations. We have a lot of fun along the way and make a lot of long-lasting friendships too! We are proud to work alongside the Nobles of Ararat in this mission and welcome any Lady to join us in our fun in supporting our children. Please contact Lady Rachel Aulgur, High Priestess, at [email protected] or 816-204-6134, if you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of our organization.

the photo for this article is of paintings done by patients at the Sacramento, California Shriner’s Hospital for Children, which our Court visited just this past weekend. We were honored to tour the facility and wear our fezzes.

BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

That’s enough for this time! So untilnext time, a hug doesn’ t cost anything togive or get. Think about it!!!!!!
