Mrs Kelly, a resident at the Rusoord Old Age Home in Lydenburg celebrated her 102nd birthday on 15 April. She still enjoys good health and only has trouble walking. For someone of 102 years old she is an inspiration for everyone. Happy Birthday Grandma Kelly, we hope that there will be lots more birthdays in the future.

group of n ine suspects overpowered two members of the ASAPS late Monday afternoon and
escaped from police custody.During subsequent follow up operations by the SAPS one suspect was chased and shot dead on the premises of the Highlands Panorama News at around 18:30.Upon arrival at the office, a large Police presence was on site to carry out the investigation.At the time The Highlands Panorama News was asked not to take pictures of the crime scene or the deceased suspect, as the
investigation was still in progress.According to our sources, 14 suspects were in the cell, but five opted not to try and escape.By 08:30 on Tuesday morning, four of the eight suspects at large had been re-arrested. One of them was arrested close to Dullstroom. By the time of going to print the Highlands Panorama News requested an update from Col. Leonard Hlathi but the police were still investigating this escape and more information could not be obtained. - Andre Coetzee.

Daar is slegs een winkeltjie in Tonteldoos wat die mense voorsien van basiese middele wat kos en huishoudelike middels aanbetref.Die donkiekarre stroom elke oggend dorp toe vol mense en trek swaar terug met hout en inkopies as hulle huiswaarts keer. Meeste van die donkies is ondervoed, ingetel en het skaafwonde op hulle lywe a.g.v donkietuie wat stukkend is en verkeerd gepas word. Siek donkies word onbehandeld gelos om te vrek en donkies loop sonder enige reflektors in
die nag op die paaie. Die donkieprojek is vir die laaste maand aan die gang waar inwoners en diereliefhebbers probeer om die donkies se pyn en lyding te verlig en daar word na hulle gesondheid omgesien. Die volgende persone help weekliks met die projek uit liefdadigheid sonder vergoeding, Hendrik en Rene Naude (inwoners), dr. Marietjie Malan (veearts), Jako de Klerk (hoefsmid), Chris van Vuuren (herstel van tuie) en Annelize van Vuuren.Ontwurming, wondbehandeling, toom en tuig herstelwerk en karretjie herstelwerk is die dienste wat aan die mense en donkies gelewer word. Municipality can still not say for certain which grave he is in. Karin is asking the help of the public to provide her with receipts for graves. That is only for graves in row D (the first row) of the new block in the Lydenburg Cemetery (across from Xstrata). As you drive in to the cemetery it is the second block of grave sites on your right. Grave numbers were never applied to the graves and after the funeral everyone was confused as to where her husband was buried.It is very important to obtain these receipts to clarify the issue for Karin. BoodskappersVAN die vroegste tye af, was boodskappers die sleutelmense in enige vooruitgang en ontwikkeling. Gaan lees maar die geskiedenis oor die bou van koning Dawid / Salomo se tempel, die Comrades marathon en duisende ander stories.Vandag noem ons dit kommunikasie. En of jy nou die media haat of nie, jy gedy op nuus. Dit is amper soos skinder, net meer amptelik en gestuktureerd. Die hele Amerika en selfs hier in SA, hang aan die lippe van tydskrifte wat vertel wat die sterre doen. Selfs die Huisgenoot het totaal in karakter verander en vertel nou stories oor sepie rolspelers of Steve. Persoonlik dink ek jy moet n baie saai en oppervlakkige lewe lei om vermaak hieruit te vind. Ek praat nie van
insiggewende of ernstige boodskappe nie. Dis anders.n Vrye en onafhanklike media met kompetisie, is die hoeksteen van n demokrasie. Boodskappers is die enjin van vooruitgang.Die ANC se pogings om die media te muilband is tekenend van n verstokte en falende regering. n Regering moet die toestande skep wat direk tot ontwikkeling en die verbetering van n samelewing lei. In ons geval het ons n regering wat lojaliteit beloon aan sy ondersteuners. Dit is n mentaliteit eie aan Afrika, Hati, Rusland, Noord Korea en tot onlangs China. Waar mense wakker geword het en weggebreek het hiervan (Suid Korea, Taiwan, Singapoer) is daar oop gemeenskappe met fenomenale groei en rykdom. By ons is daar nrens meer n teken van entoesiasme, entrepeneurskap, laterale denke, etiek en n positiewe gesindheid van sy mense nie. Dit, so sal die geskiedenis wel getuig, is die ANC se nalatenskap. Met sy leiers se skoling in Moskou, China en Kuba en sy Afrika sindroom, is hulle nie in staat om van die kommunistiese
totale beheer sisteem af weg te kom nie. In die jonger (Malema) geslag het hulle die bakhand staan mentaliteit vervolmaak. Reuel Khoza (voorsitter van Nedbank), Moeletsi Mbeki en andere word deur die ANC gekruisig as hulle die party kritiseer. En daar is baie van hierdie oopkop mense in ons samelewing. Matthews Phosa en Cyril Ramaphosa was so, maar deur intimidasie sing hulle vandag slaafs die party deuntjie. In ons eie omgewing is M.J. Matemane, n wyse man, wat nie skroom om dit wat verkeerd is te belig nie. Hierdie is mense wat in n regering van uitnemendheid wonderwerke sal kan behaal. Mense wat die hele samelewing kan ophef. Mense wat die betekenis van transformasie verstaan - nie van wit na swart nie, maar van n gesukkel na voorspoed. Van eng denke na laterale denke. Van verbruikers na doeners. Van armlastigheid na welvaart. Solank as wat ons by versukkelde kamerade soos kuba afkyk, sal ons geensinds vorder nie. Ek noem hierdie kritici die nuwe geslag BOODSKAPPERS. Vreesloos. Onverskrokke. Positief. Ysters. Ons grootste uitdaging is om die massas hierdie dinge te leer verstaan, sodat hulle leiers op meriete kan kies, wat ons kan ophef.

Ons beleef te veel van 'n oorlewingstryd op eie bodem teen misdadigers wat klaarblyklik die hef in die hand het. 'n Waarskuwing: Wees versigtig as jy gaan kos koop. Verlede week is daar berig van mense wat amper gekaap is in n KFC se deurry-restaurant. Dis die laaste plek waar mens dit sal verwag. Op Hoorhiers is daar dus 'n kwelling. Hierdie ding pla my. Want statistiek bewys dat die moord nie uniek in hul verlies is nie. Onthou julle die pa wat sy eie dogter geskiet het in die oprit omdat hy geglo het 'n kaper ry met haar kar weg? Hoe tragies. Wat my eintlik kwel is dat misdaadstories te algemeen raak in ons land. As jy iemand vertel van 'n diefstal of iets dergliks, weet hulle dit eintlik al. Want toe dit met hulle gebeur het, is dit en dat gesteel. Die diewe het s te werk gegaan, en dis wat hlle verloor het. As hulle nog nie slagoffers was nie, het vriende of familie al deurgeloop. Dit voel soms of mens deur die oppervlakkige voorkoms van mense moet breek om jou eie misdaad storie te laat geld. Dis 'n ongewone versperring om deur te breek. Misdaad maak my sinies. Ons word getref deur sinnelose misdadige geweld en kruip net al hoe dieper agter die venstertralies weg.

Elsje du Plessis van Lydenburg skryf:Na aanleiding van Dr. Pieter Mulder, adjunk minister en leier van die VF+ se skrywe in verlede week se koerant oor straatname. Dis is skokkend om te lees dat die DA in Kaapstad voorgestel het dat die Jacob Marestraat na Jeff Maselastraat, n gewese PAC-Leier wat skuldig bevind is dat hy deel was van n plan om mense in Pretoria te vermoor, te vernoem. Ek vermoed die DA gebruik minderhede net totdat hy die swart steun kan inpalm wat die DA in elkgeval nooit sal regkry nie. Ek het egter my geloofwaardigheid in die DA verloor met die DA se hantering van die tugondersoek na dr. Manie van Dyk. DA LP se rojale reiseise. Die DA het van Dyk onskuldig bevind op n klagte dat hy die DA in oneer gebring het omdat hy padreiseise van R275 500-00 ingedien het. Vir n rit padlangs tussen Johannesburg en Kaapstad kan LP's R12000-00 eis terwyl n retoerkaartjie die parlement ongeveer R5000 sou kos. Ten spyte van die ho koste vir belastingbetalers het van Dyk verkies om per motor te reis. Van Dyk is deur die DA onskuldig bevind omdat hy nie die parlementre rels oortree het nie. Watter morele reg het die DA om die ANC te kritiseer oor spandabele uitgawes oor reise as die DA nie eens sy eie LP kan straf omdat hy belastingbetalers se geld mors nie? Die tugverhoor se boodskap is dat die DA se LP'S maar kan voortgaan met rojale uitgawes. Ek en al my vriende het in die laaste verkiesing DA gestem, maar nooit weer nie.

Ons was oppad van die Oos-Rand af Sabie toe die naweek van die 6de April 2012 toe ons bakkie besluit het om ons langs die pad te laat, 30km van Lydenburg af.Ons het toe 1023 geskakel om n nommer te kry vir die naaste insleepdienste, en hulle het ons Longtom Towing se nommer gegee, ons wil hulle net bedank vir die spoedige diens, want binne 15 minute was hulle daar, die vriendelikheid, en die aanbied van n leen voertuig. Johan en Riaan Engelbrecht skryf: Na die goeie opkoms en insameling op 24 Maart, will ek en my pa graag vir Piet van Vuuren van Atlas Paneelkloppers baie dankie se vir sy insiatief om die Gholfdag moontelik te maak. Die prostese is nou n werklikheid en sal my weer n geleentheid gee op n normale lewenstyl. Nogmaals baie dankie aan Pieter en al die personeel van die Lydenburg Gholfklub, asook die deelnemers en borge. Uit ons harte uit dankie.
Annetjie Venter van Lydenburg skryf: Nege maande gelede is my kinders van my weggeneem deur die SAPD. Ek was onbewus van enige probleme met my kinders en ons as ouers was geskok en verward oor wat gebeur het. In rep-en-roer spook ons hierdie kant en daardie kant toe, maar al wat oorbly is om die prokureur mnr. Johan Marnewick se hulp te vra. Daar is bewerings gemaak dat ek as ouer my kind van 11 jaar verhuur het om om geld te maak. Ook onsedelike aanranding. Intussen word ek toegesluit vir sekere aanklagte en betaal borg. Daarna hof toe. In die tyd gebeur iets, Johan Marnewick kom agter alles is op leuns gebaseer en daar is niks waarvoor ek aangekla kan word nie. Die 16de Maart word die saak teen my teruggetrek en my kinders word aan my teruggestuur. Ons huisgesin was stukkend en verward en deurmekaar want alles wat gebaseer op n spul leuns. Hoe kan mense dink hulle put genot uit so iets, waar hulle nie eers die ouers kontak om seker te maak hulle vat net die kinders weg en is nie besorg oor die ware feite nie. Ons kan nou weer aangaan en vorentoe kyk.

Anoniem van Lydenburg skryf: Ai, ek het so lekker gelag toe ek nou die stukkie in die koerant sien! Goed gestel Gifappel! Wel, ek is inderdaad die bobbejaan wat voor jou deur die rommel is. My besoek aan die 8-10 sakke rommel was 8 April om 12h20. Ek en my ma het onsself soos bobbejane gedra, en in die rommel gaan krap vir 'n stukkie piesang of twee... Daarna was ons lekker vuil, maar tog 'n bietjie wyser... Ek weet wie hy is, en waar hy bly. Sy Gr1 seuntjie se werkstukke en 'n ou dagboek het hulle verklap. Ons bly jare al op die pad, en sal alles in ons vermo doen om in 'n mooi omgewing terug te ry huis toe, selfs al moet ek myself soos 'n bobbejaan gedra!Ek versoek aan die plaaslike koerante om asb aanwysings te plaas na die stortings terrein. Dis eenvoudig om te kry! Voortrekkerstraat is nader aan die asgate as Weltevreden se grondpad!PS. Indien jy soos 'n skelm in die nag jou rommel in ons mooi omgewing wil strooi, soek net eers jou vullis deur om seker te maak 'n ander bobbejaan kry nie jou details nie!

According to Themba, social responsibility to the communities in which they work is a high priority for VIPCON. With success comes the ability to network, lend a helping hand and support worthwhile causes. Last year they undertook to help Lelievlei, after most of their accommodation was destroyed in a fire. VIPCON built and handed over 8 houses to residents of Lelievlei. They have also built and donated homes to families in Mashishing. The latest project is a creche which is being built in Mashishing, on land owned by VIPCON. The creche will have seven classrooms, a kitchen and two bathrooms each for boys and girls. The creche will be handed over on Mandela Day in July 2012. BUCO Lydenburg (formally Laeveld Bouhandelaars) has joined hands with VIPCON and has donated all the bricks for the project. The vision of VIPCON extends far further that what they are currently building, by further sustainable housing development on the outskirts of Lydenburg, the needs for more schools, a private hospital and shopping malls will eventually become reality.

competition is the top level of achievement for local performers. The biggest achiever was Suria Terreblanche, who was the overall winner in the 13-15 year category and won in Photography. Ronell wishes to thank Dwayne Bouwer for being their right hand throughout the championships, the parents, models and their supporters. The models worked unbelievablly hard for their achievements and medals. On 18 April, the Risk & Wellness Department of Dwarsr iv ier Mine celebrated yet again one of their quarterly Wellness Days for its employees. This quarter the theme was Women's Health and over and above the normal Glucose testing, blood pressure testing, VCCT and flu vaccinations, every woman received a woman's health brochure, recipe booklet and a chocolate.Dwarsrivier Mine believes very strongly in unconditional care of their employees' wellbeing.

Boonop staan die dorp aan die voorpunt van Platorand roete (deesdae Kruger Lowveld) wat die dorpe Pilgrims Rest, Hazyview, Graskop, Sabie en Hoedspruit insluit. Die Longtompas bied n uitsig wat min ander pass hom kan nadoen. Op van sy hoogste punte kan tot in Mosambiek gesien word. Suid-Afrikaners en toeriste weet dat hierdie bogemelde dorpe elke jaar duisende besoekers ontvang en een van die prima-bestellings in die land is.
Die NG Moedergemeente Lydenburg het is sedert 1850 rotsvas deel van die dorp en sy gemeenskap. Die huidige gebou is in 1894 voltooi en die bekende Voortrekker Kerk en Voortrekker Skoolsaal is in 1850 voltooi. Die rooi metaalposbus wat dateer van die Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek is voor die kerk en net een van drie wat oor is in Suid-Afrika. Geskiedkundige monumenteLydenburg is baie trots op hierdie geskiedkundige monumente. Dit is een van die unieke geskiedkundige geboue waarmee die dorp spog. Daar is ook byvoorbeeld Lydenburg Museum waar twee van die Lydenburg-koppe se afdrukke gesien kan word. Dit is deur 'n skoolseun in 1957 ontdek. Die kleimaskers dateer van 490 n.C.

Mnr. Pieter Kugel het as kunstenaar en Lydenburger nie baie bekendstelling nodig nie. Hy het onlangs die projek van die Horskool Lydenburg se muur oorgeneem is amper klaar daarmee. Die muur se pleister en handgemaakte letters, so ook die rame, sit nie in enigiemand se broek nie. Dit is n wonderlike verwelkoming van almal aan die horskool en het die hoek van Eeufees- en Voortrekkerstrate sommer opgekikker. Dit lyk pragtig, veral in die nag as al die ligte aan is.

Die roete is uiteengesit sodat hele gesin kan deelneem aan pret uitdagings soos lemoene gooi, windbuks skiet en wild uitkenning. Die jaar sluit ons die Eco-roete in vir mense wat
die die 4x4 uitdaging wil doen nie. Daar is groot pryse te wen deur almal! Ons wil graag opkomende sang kunstenaars nooi om te kom sing by die geleentheid. Dan sal daar weer die jaar die Mej en Mnr Wildevy skoonheids kompetisie aangebied word, die inligting is beskikbaar op die ondergenoemde w e b w e r f e n o f C h a n t e l l e Goodburn. Die dag het altyd 'n heerlike feestelike atmosfeer met verskeie stalletjies wat tuisgemaakte kos en verversings bedien. wheel of her beloved 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente named Chariot.Rachel Veitch has covered 920 000km in a car she's owned since 1964, but her ailing eyesight means she'll have to stop driving. Veitch told Fox News, "I know I'm not safe enough to drive but I have taken it in my stride. Im legally blind, so I can no longer drive my lovely Chariot. They dont have to take it away, I would not dream of driving that car again.According to the DailyMail, Veitch bought her prized Chariot for $3289 (rand equivalent of R2335) in February 1964 from a dealer in Sanford, Florida. The car, which has been appraised at R95 771, has gone through 18 batteries, eight exhausts and countless oil changes.Veitch has had an obsessive dedication to the car which is the main reason it's managed to be roadworthy for nearly half a century. The car was wrecked in 1980 following a rear-end collision while Veitch, who was not injured, drove along the I-95 in Georgia.Veitch said: When I buy gas, I write down the mileage, the date and how many miles

THE most eagerly anticipated bakkie of 2011 was without a doubt Fords new Ranger. With significant players such as the extremely talented Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok competing for honours in a hotly contested segment where brand loyalty is at its fiercest, Ford had its work cut out from the start.After our first assessment of the Ranger, the flagship 3,2-litre TDCi XLT 4x4 auto (January 2012), we walked away very impressed and said the Ranger has pulled ahead of the Hilux. These words proved controversial among our readers, especially considering the Toyotas stellar reputation that saw it earn the title of best double cab/bakkie in the annual CAR Top 12 Best Buys for 11 years running.But that was the most expensive Ranger and we were left wondering if its brilliance trickled down to the rest of the range. To see if Ford had done such a thorough development job on other models, we put a 2,2-litre, rear-wheel-drive doublecab model with a manual gearbox through its paces.From the onset of the test, the almost-new 2,2-litre TDCi engine proved to be one of this models most impressive features. We were initially surprised by its healthy power delivery; some testers remarked that it felt as fast as the 3,2-litre. This proved true when we headed out to our test strip, on which the zero-to-100 km/h sprint was despatched in 12,73 seconds, just 0,3 seconds slower than the 3,2-litre auto.The 2,2-litres vigour during in-gear acceleration was equally noteworthy; it was less than a second slower than the larger powerplant in each increment. Dollops of low-down torque see it pulling lustily from low revs in each of the six gears. Admittedly, our 2,2 4x2 test unit weighed a significant 262 kg less than the 3,2-litre 4x4 auto, but the smaller engines nippiness both in city and high-way driving still caught us off guard and makes us wonder if the extra outlay for the 3,2 makes sense.The cabin remains a Ranger strong suit and in most ways is ergonomically on the same level as the Amarok and ahead of the Hilux. impressed with the tiny infotainment screen in appearance and limited functionality similar to the one found in the Ford Focus. Toyotas vastly superior touchscreen system offers USB and Bluetooth as part of the standard equipment, things the Ranger lack.From there onward its all excellent news. Perceived quality is good, while the cloth-covered seats are comfortable and supportive. And unlike most older
bakkies most notably the Isuzu KB adults should be able to avoid numb-bum syndrome after being seated on the rear bench for a good few hours.As we found in our previous Ranger test, Ford has done a commendable job in surpressing road and engine noise in the cabin, especially because the 2,2-litre sounds rather agricultural.However, we feel more development time could have been spent on improving the recalcitrant shift action of the six-speed box. At times, engaging first or reverse gear would see the transmission baulk, while shunting was noticeable if changes were rushed or the driver depressed the throttle too abruptly. That said, we found that, with a gentler approach, the shift action proved quite pleasant thanks to short throws.Although most of the roads in the Western Cape where CAR is based are in a respectable condition, the Ranger proved supple and controlled (well, for a bakkie) on the occasional rough patches and gravel stretches. In fact, it runs the Amarok very close in this regard and gives the Hilux a bloody nose, and would
make for a fairly painfree everyday vehicle.Not only has Ford made major strides with the new Ranger compared with its already competent predecessor, but it has done enough for it to confidently stand its ground on the top of the leisure-bakkie podium. Sure, there are aspects that could be improved, such as a slicker gearchange and reach adjustment on
the steering column, but, t a k i n g i n t o account that it costs between R16 000 and R30 000 less than its two m a i n compet i tors, n o o n e considering a d o u b l e - c a b bakkie should i g n o r e t h e Ranger.The Ranger has dethroned the Hilux as C A R s f a v o u r i t e leisure bakkie and, for the fo reseeab le f u t u r e , w e dont see this s c e n a r i o changing. We test the new Kia OptimaKIA has now entered the D segment or big car market with the brand new Optima. Competing in the market with Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Suzuki Kisashi, and VW Passat, the Optima is actually bigger than the BMW 3-series with loads more rear legroom space and an enormous boot.In terms of appointments, the Optima comes fully loaded, with only the twin electronic sunroof a R 10 000 option. Coming in at only R 305 995, this is a whole lot of car for your money.You get a lively 2.4 litre 16V engine (132 kW and 231 Nm) six speed automatic box with tiptronic and paddle shift function, trip computer that even tells you when to rotate tires and change oil, cruise control, integrated Bluetooth, steering satellite controls, dual zone automatic climate control, 6 CD shuttle Infinity sound system with iPod, USB and Aux in, two 12V sockets (including lighter), heated and cooled perforated two tone leather seats independently adjustable for front passengers, dual memory setup for the electrically adjustable driver seat, electric windows with auto function for both front windows, rearview camera (in mirror), electronic and foldable exterior mirrors, airbags all round, ABS with EBD and all the other abbreviations. Fuel and heat gauges are digital.There is an Eco button for better fuel consumption, automatic xenon adaptive headlights, start button, keyless entry and a foot operated parking brake.Having tested the Sonata in September last year, the two cars are so similar that they have to be compared. The Kia styling is more aggressive, the Sonata more conservative. The Sonata has nicer wheels (my opinion) but the Kia has the nicer interior and perhaps a bit more kit. Drive train and ride is very similar, with the Sonata perhaps slightly softer sprung.So, how does the Kia Optima drive? Firstly, the engine makes a lot of power. The gearbox is sensitive and you do not wait for it to change if you are in a hurry. It will also allow you to accelerate through the whole engine rev range before changing up, making the driving experience sharper and more lively. The car should be very economical, as it only revs at 2 200 rpm @ 120 and only 2 500 rpm @ 140 in top gear.The power steering is very light and perhaps a tad too much so, as you can feel the stability system fighting torque steer if you drive briskly. Brakes are excellent and stability and handling is good. The steering wheel is nice and small, with a thick, and comfortable grip. The interior reminds one of Saab.Build quality is good and the car feels solid and safe.Kia has undoubtedly entered the premium car market with the Optima. It is big, comfortable, capable and luxurious. Coupled with an excellent warranty and service plan and considering the price and excellent Kia brand status, you cannot go wrong with this car. The third event of the Echo 4x4 Xcoss Country Inland Championship hosted by GOC, the SSS racing Losberg 200 took place this past weekend in the Fochville area.The 3 x 58km laps were a combination of mealie fields, rocks, mud, bush and tree plantations.
