Being native Southern Californians we enjoyed that regions abundant good weather that included large amounts of sunshine, so moving to Carmel 10 years ago proved to be a bit of an adjustment due to the changed weather conditions that exist on the Monterey peninsula. However, as a designer working in the fields of Architecture & Interiors I was prepared to address the difference in weather in designing this Hatton Fields home. From the moment you enter the outdoor space at the entry gates you are aware you’ve come upon a different kind of space. A Colorado stone walkway greets you, giving a sense of arrival, as you approach a solid teak entry door, then into this Carmel residence, inviting, protective, yet open, accommodating. Numerous skylights, clear-story windows, provide a bright, pleasant, environment, even on the darkest of rainy days.

All public areas were designed for flow, comfort, relaxation.

The design is characteristics of a Frank Lloyd Wright Oak Park home, hinting at arts and crafts, but it ’s also soft contemporary architecture.

CRITERIA & PHILOSOPHY

M A T E R I A L SMATERIALS CONSIST OF A SIMPLE PALLET: Stucco, Carmel stone, glass, ceder shake roof. Stucco walls surround to match the finish of the house, defining outdoor rooms for private family entertainment. Blended concrete walks & decks to allow for ~ real usage ~ by family and guests; concrete walkways surround the entire house to elimi-nate dirt being tracked into the home.

An 8’ diameter solid teak Japanese Hot Tub for relaxing, soaking under the night sky. INTERIORS PALLET OF MATERIALS: Clean painted drywall gallery walls for the display of art, trav-ertine and maple hardwood floors, ~ slab ~ granite counter-tops and splashes.

1. House numbers fabricated of solid bronze, natural weathered finish.

2. Entry gates are antique Art Deco, origin: Bordeaux, France, from Jan de Luz, Carmel Valley. Fabricated of solid steel, they have been reworked with ball-bearing hinges for an easy lasting swing. Their solid steel hinge structures are in-bedded into the solid concrete col-umn entry structures. Their finish: A mottled natural rust patina, requiring no maintenance. 3. All exterior lighting is manufactured high quality ar-chitectural, made to last and be anesthetically beau-tiful, always. 4. All colored concrete walks & decks have 1/2” re-bar reinforcing at 12” on center both directions, concrete of a quality finish.

5. Oversized Entry Door is custom fabricated out of SOLID TEAK, with an antique cast grill, origin: Bordeaux, France, from Jan de Luz, Carmel Valley. A solid teak door behind this grill swings away inside the house to allow for a view to the outside entry area, as well as to provides for the flow of fresh ocean-air cross-ventilation. 6. A sculptural divider wall separates the Living Room & Family Room is faced with travertine, which is uti-lized throughout the house. This wall has a two way, see through, fireplace that is an alternative heating source for the entertainment areas, should one want to use it rather than the forced air heating system. It ’s operation by remote control. There are storage niches on either sides of this divider wall which have custom 1/2” thick polished plate glass shelves for displaying art. There is a Ron Rezek designed multi-speed ceiling fan in the Family Room. These two voluminous rooms, with their large clear-story windows over thermo-pain sliding glass doors open onto a large outdoor deck area and enjoy a panoramic view to the yard and distant Cypress trees & mountains. Beyond this deck area is a large lawn area for Bocce, golf putting, gen-eral play. 7. The kitchen is bright, open and flows into the family room. It has:

8. The large studio area has a ~ band ~ of skylights with two openable sections for venting heat build up out of the room. All skylights throughout the house have treated thermo-glassto deflect the suns heat. 9. The house has two separate heating zones (two heaters) for efficiency. 10. All interior rooms utilize recessed down spot light-ing, that are on dimmers. 11. All solid-core doors have solid oil-rubbed bronze hardware, by Baldwin. Some doors with designer towel or clothing hooks All door stops are solid oil rubbed bronze, by Baldwin. 12. All bathrooms have high end designer hardware and fixtures, Most by Hansgrohe, designer ~ Philip Stark Duravit pedestal sink in powder room, designer~Philip Stark. 13. Master Bath has designer lighting, as does the built in vanity with storage cabinets in master bedroom area. It ’s shower of travertine & tempered clear plate glass is open with an electronically openable skylight to vent moisture laden air.to the outside.

There is a large shower head for soft rain-like comfort.There is a shower wand sprayer.There is a bidet. as well as a towel warmer.The toilet area has a specially treated trans-lucent plate-glass door for privacy.

M A T E R I A L S14. The master bedroom is an open, expansive space, that energizes when one is not sleeping. It invites loung-ing to observe the outside private views of landscaped yard and distant Monterey Cypress. There is a wall li-brary with shelving of solid hard rock maple. A walk-in closet and a 2 closet wall with custom translucent white glass sliders, all providing for much storage. 15. There is extensive built-in storage cabinetry through-out the entire house, many slab granite counter tops. 16. These granite ~ slabs ~ were fabricated for all counter top as well as the two hearths on either side of the fire place. 17. All window coverings are top line and remain. Master bedroom has wired remote control black out window coverings for complete control of exposure to outside light and daytime sleeping. 18. All landscaping is quality selected planting materialsExamples:

a. All planting areas are on a drainage sys-tem with dirt replaced with high grade plant-er mix.b. Selected decorative boulders, decorative water basins. c. Coast redwood trees along back side of property line, California Redbud trees, a ver-ity of ferns, bougainvillea, lavender, sage, echium, and more.

19. The laundry room is finished with storage cabine-try with a granite counter top that has a deep drawn stainless steel laundry tub with an extendible-head faucet. 20. The garage is insulated with painted drywall. The

M A T E R I A L Sautomatic roll-up garage door is made up of translu-cent white safety glass for a bright interior at all times of day. The doors surrounds are manufactured utiliz-ing extruded heavy gage aluminum with a heat fused white powder-coat finish. Will never require painting as it ’s extremely durable. Garage has some built in cabi-nets same as house. 21. The water heater is top line Voyager, high capacity, made with a stainless steel holding tank. 22. Studio walls have been insulated with blown in soundproofing. 23. Built in vacuum system, Beam Serenity Plus. 24. Carbon filtered water purification system, by Life Source~Biotron.

CLOSING THOUGHTS What I like about this home is it ’s open warmth, encourag-ing, both interaction and quiet time for those inhabiting it ’s spaces. It ’s light, bright, uplifting, protective of ones spirit; in this, I accomplished my goal. Putting it all together it ’s hard to match compared to proper-ties recently sold; it ’s a meaningful choice of design, quality construction.
