Pleasure and pride if they are performing well but considerable angst when children are not progressing as you hoped. Reports can mean anxious times for children too. Will my parents be disappointed or proud? This is the main concern of most children. Kids of all ages take their cues from their parents, so your reaction to their school report can affect the way they see themselves as learners and as people. Are your expectations for your son or daughter realistic and in line with their ability? Expectations are tricky. If they are too high then kids can be turned off learning. Too low and there is nothing to strive for. Pitch your expectations in line with your child’s abilities. A quick check of your child’s last report may provide you with a good yardstick. Do you believe that children learn at different rates? There are slow bloomers, late developers and steady-as-you-go kids in every classroom, so avoid comparing your child to siblings, your friends’ children and even yourself when you were a child. Instead look for individual progress. Are you willing to safeguard your child’s self-esteem rather than deflate it? Self-confidence is a pre-requisite for learning, so be prepared to be as positive and encouraging as possible. Reports should provide you with an idea of your child’s progress in all subject areas, their attitude and social development. Here are some ideas to consider when you open your child’s report: Focus on strengths Do you look for strengths or weaknesses first? The challenge is to focus on strengths even if they are not in the traditional 3Rs or core subjects. Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning If the report indicates that effort is below standard, then you have something to work on. If your child is putting in the required effort, then you cannot ask any more than that, regardless of the grading. Focus on Wellbeing Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a picture of your child’s progress as a member of a social setting. How your child gets along with his or her peers will influence his happiness and well-being, as well as give an Indicator to his future. The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued by employers so don’t dismiss these as unimportant. Take note of student self-assessment Kids are generally very honest and will give a realistic assessment of their progress. They are generally very perceptive so take note of their opinions. Discuss the report with your son or daughter Talk about strengths first before looking at areas that need improvement. Ask for their opinion about how they performed and discuss their concerns. After reports are read and discussed celebrate your child’s efforts with a special activity or treat. On behalf of all the staff I wish all families a very safe, relaxing holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday 14th July! Cheers Tina FAREWELLS We have two amazing teachers leaving us at the end of the year. SCHOOL COUNCIL – summary of meeting held 17th June

2014

From Martin Symes, School Council President.

Key points from the meeting

We are developing a sustainability program for the school, with students and teachers involved. We have access to a sustainability grant to support this activity.

OSHclub, our before/after school care providers, have submitted their Term 1 report. The high standards of service continue and the program is well supported.

We have received an ANZAC Centenary grant. This will be used to publish a hard copy book of students’ work relating to this subject over the coming year.

Work will take place over the coming weeks to tidy up the school grounds following the building installation.

Planning for next year’s fete is continuing – please contact Claire Sowerby, Robyn Pollock, staff or School Council of you would like to help.

We will hold our second annual student fun run in Carlton Gardens in Term 4. This is a great whole-of-school event, for students (running), teachers (organising) and parents (cheering).

Our music teacher Steve has begun planning next year’s School Concert.

The next School Council meeting is on Tuesday 29th

July.

If you have any questions for me or the School Council members,

please feel free to contact me on [email protected].

Building Update During the term holidays Grove will complete all works. These include: * fencing (rear fence recently completed) * rear gates and gates on Rathdowne Street * replacement of turf * ‘soft fall’ updated around adventure playground. When these works are completed we will seek advice and quotes regarding the redevelopment of the playground I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the parents, children and staff of Carlton Gardens for welcoming me so warmly into the community. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here although my stay has been but a brief one. It is difficult to say farewell but as you can understand an ongoing position at Greenhills Primary is such a wonderful opportunity. It has been a great pleasure to work alongside Tina, Andrew, Joy, Cathie and the team. I would like to wish everyone much happiness and ongoing success in the future.

Before School/After School Care Program

Program Update Just some reminders as we near the end of term 2. Holiday program brochures are now available online as well as at the program and school office. Bookings are open online and please remember to book early as last Holidays some days ended up being fully booked. IMPORTANT: A quick reminder, please be sure that you are booking children in advance online. With the program growing so rapidly we need to know how many kids we will be having. Also please call or text any last minute cancelations as it is a safety precaution that we know where all children are that are enrolled for that session. If you have to book last minute please call the program and we can let you know if we have space for the Children. This will incur a late booking fee. Lastly we are also always collecting boxes and other recycled materials for the program so please feel free to bring them by. I am hoping to do more activities and programing with recycled products and teaching the children the importance of reusing items to help the environment. Also any old clothes dress up or just old clothes we can use for dress up are welcome. Thanks again for all your support!

[which will be 2 weeks from date of issue] Otherwise students will NOT be able to attend. Please return notes promptly to avoid disappointment.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation Leadership Team

There has been a very positive response to the news that the Carlton Scout Group will be re-opening in July. We’re looking forward to once again having Cubs and Scouts in the historic Scout Hall at 12 Shakespeare Street in North Carlton, between Drummond and Lygon Streets. We have just finished renovating the building and it’s beautiful! Scouting is the largest youth organisation in Australia. Membership is open to boys and girls of all backgrounds, ages 5-26, in the following age groups: Joeys (ages 5-7)

Cubs (8-10)

Scouts (11-14)

Venturers (15-17)

Rovers (18-26)

At Carlton, we will be offering Cubs on Tuesday evenings,

and Scouts on Thursday evenings, starting July 22.

We have already had interest in launching the Joey section and a start-up date will be announced as soon as we have enough names—so if you’re interested, let us know! Venturers meet on Thursday evenings in Alphington, and will start

meeting in Carlton as soon as we have enough numbers.

Rovers already meet at the Hall on Monday evenings.

Parents and other adults are always welcomed to get involved, and

to participate either a little or a lot!

All kids and parents are welcome to give Scouting a try, with

no obligation Scouting offers a wide-ranging program of

activities encouraging the physical, intellectual, emotional,

social and spiritual development of young people.

Scouting is a fully inclusive organization. All adults involved in

Scouting hold Working With Children cards.

For more information about Scouting, contact

David Hunt, Group Leader.

On Wednesday 18th June, the 1-2s hosted a

celebration evening to share our learning about our

“Sensing Light and Sound” inquiry. We set up our

experiments in each room for families to explore and

test out. We also displayed our writing about our

inquiry including lists, “predict, observe, explains”

and procedures. Our favourite experiments included

making rainbows, making 3D glasses, seeing how

sound travels through instruments, balloons and

telephones, and shadow puppets.

All the 1-2s loved sharing their learning with their

families. Thank you so much to all of the Carlton

Gardens community for coming along and celebrating

with us!
