Erev Shabbos Parashas Vayikra 5770
Dear Parents,
Every year at this time, the principals of our local high schools send a letter to all parents warning of the influx oftourists to the area for Pesach, among who, unfortunately, are a few unsavory characters who prey on youngadults, and young people who exhibit inappropriate behavior. Specific areas – such as the boardwalk and theperimeters of the Pesach hotels are singled out as especially undesirable areas, and parents must ensure ourteenagers do not hang out around there.
This particular warning does not extend to our elementary aged children, as it is understood and universallypracticed, that young children are not allowed to go unsupervised to such areas. What is not so clearly understoodor appreciated is the potential for harm to reach our young children through the Internet. Some parents, unwittingly, are allowing their children access to sites, people and situations that they would never, never permit,if it meant going to a place where ‘bad stuff’ was possibly happening.
This is a problem that is not the parents’ doing, nor is it easily solved. Many of us have made the decision toallow Internet access in our homes. Not all of us have figured out how to keep our children (or ourselves) safe insuch an environment. In order to address this concern, the Principals of our local yeshivas and day schools havegotten together to tackle this formidable challenge. Four years ago there was a community-wide gathering thatdealt with the dangers of the Internet and was very well attended. Follow-up was not concerted and themomentum was lost.
This spring, efforts are being renewed. The first step will be a community-wide event on Wednesday eveningApril 21, at the NMB Performing Arts Theater. (Please mark your calendar now) This program will beconsidered as the first of the four parent workshops that our parents are expected to attend (as detailed in thecover letter accompanying the registration forms for next year). The speakers will also address the students, intheir respective schools, during the school day. Following the 21st, planning will be ongoing as to how best tohelp the parents fulfill their responsibility to protect their children.
By focusing on this seemingly overwhelming challenge our generation faces, and by working together, we areconfident that all of us; educators, community leaders and parents, can help fortify our children against thepotential emotional and spiritual harm posed by uncontrolled access to the Internet. Watch for further details.
Have a wonderful Shabbos,
Rabbi Kalman BaumannPrincipal
