David Schatz, who died Oct 6.

Joan Burns, who died Oct 7.

In the book I Like Being Catholic, the authors list ten

reasons for parents to raise their children Catholic. A few of

them are: So they’ll have some rules to reject when their

teenagers. So they’ll have some rules to reconsider when they

have kids of their own. So they’ll have rules to cherish for the

rest of their lives. So they’ll have something to hold onto when

times are bad. So they’ll come to know every person wears the

face of Christ in a different way, even those who seem to be

enemies. So they’ll know about Jesus’ death and resurrection

and understand life is more than suffering.

While the list starts off somewhat tongue in cheek, it

eventually gets to more serious values, like realizing the presence

of Christ in others and the importance of knowing about Jesus’

death and resurrection, and having values to cherish and hold

onto when times are bad.

The gospel writer Mark would agree with the need to know

about Jesus as one who suffered, died, and rose for us. He

presents Jesus telling his disciples about his coming suffering

and death on three different occasions. This weekend’s gospel

comes right after Jesus has spoken about his suffering and death

for the third time.

It as though James and John have not heard one word of

what Jesus has told them about the suffering and death that

await him in Jerusalem. All they are concerned about is what

Jesus can make happen for them when he comes into “his glory.”

What they want, they tell him, are the two best places next to

him, on his right and on his left. Jesus answers with the images

of “cup” and “baptism.” In the Old Testament, the cup was a rich

and ambivalent symbol. It could refer not only to overflowing joy

and communion with God and God’s salvation, but also to the

draining of the painful cup of punishment. In his passion, Jesus

will gulp down the sins of the world, drain the cup of suffering

and wrath so it may be filled with the joy of salvation.

Jesus presents a model for greatness when he says that he

has “come not to be served but to serve, to give [my] life in as

ransom for the many.” The Son of God chose to be born of a

teenage Jewish girl in a stable. God-in-flesh walked the roads of

Palestine for three rough years healing the sick and raising the

dead. He made friends with prostitutes and the poor, with

sinners and outcasts. He let his enemies beat his back with

whips, crown his head with thorns, nail him between two

robbers, curse him till he gasped his life away. He did this

because he loved every woman and man he had shaped in his

image; because he wanted to experience what they were going

through; because he cared— cared enough to live for others and

to die for them.

The final reason for raising children as Catholic was stated

in this way: “So they’ll know heaven begins on the spot where

they’re standing and they are here for God and God is with them

always.” Not a bad legacy to hand on. May we find meaning and

joy in this message and in the mission entrusted to us.

parish center. Now we look toward our future to

plan the next Phase. Please pray for our parish as

we begin this exciting step to expand our facility

to meet the needs of our ministries!

Just for fun… Ole & Sven were coming in

for a landing. Ole cried, “Sven, that runway is

small, give me 1/4 flap!” As they get closer, Ole

yelled, “Dang that’s a small airport! Give me 1/2

flaps.” As they’re coming in closer, Ole says, “Sven,

give me FULL FLAPS!” They land safely & Ole

sighs, “That’s the smallest runway I’ve ever landed

on.” Sven nods, “Yeah, Ole, it is! But look how

WIDE it is!”
