IMPORTANT SAFETY POINTSBeforeoperatingyourroutertablepleasereadthismanualthoroughly.Safetyandusetipsarecontainedinthemanual.Thispageisnotthesolesourceofsafetyinformation.Retainthemanualforfuturereference.Refertoyourrouterowner’smanualforsafetyinstructionsregardinguseofthattool.Thismanualisnotaninstructionbookonhowtodowoodworkingwithapowertool.Weencourageallwoodworkerstocontinuallyseekimprovementintheirwoodworkingskills,regardlessoftheircraftsmanshiporyearsofexperience.Theroutertable,fenceandaccessoriesmustonlybeusedfortheirintendedpurpose:woodworkingvianormalroutingoperations.“Normaloperations”meansbasicshapingofwoodinconditionswheregroundedelectricity,sharptools,dust,andrapidlyspinningpartscanbeusedorencounteredsafely.Thefollowinginstructionselaborateonthisconcept.

1. Donotuseyourroutertableasasteporseat.2. Thetopandcabinetmustbeproperlysecured,andmustbelevelbeforeuse.Inspectyourtableandbasefor damageandlevelnesspriortoeachuse.3. Keepworkareaclean,dryandwelllit.4. Thehardwareaffixingtheinserttotheroutertopmustbeinstalledforsafeuse.Tighteninserthold-down screwsbeforeeachuse.5. Safeoperationrequiresaroutertablefence,bitguard,dustcollectionsystem,startingpinorfulcrum,and speedreducerforlargediameterbits.Werecommendreducingrouterspeedfor1”orlargerdiameterbits. Consultyourbitmanufacturerfortheexactspeed.6. Usetherighttoolforthejob.Donotforceatoolorattachmenttodoajobforwhichitwasnotdesigned.7. Secureyourworkwithafeatherboard,clamps,oravicewhenappropriate.Theuseofinappropriate accessoriesmaycauseinjury.8. Wearsafetyglasses,dustmask,faceshieldandearprotection.Thisisnotanexhaustivelist.Every-dayeye glassesdonotsubstituteforsafetyglasses.9. DonotwearglovesorjewelrywhileusingapowertoolandProMAX.10. LIMITED TWO-YEAR WARRANTYWemakeeveryefforttoassurethatourproductsmeetqualityanddurabilitystandards,andwarranttotheoriginalretailpurchaserthatthisproductisfreefromdefectsinmaterialsandworkmanshipfortwoyears.RemedyshallbelimitedtoBenchDog’schoiceofrepair,replacementorrefund.Thiswarrantydoesnotprovideremedyforconsequentialeconomicloss.

Thisisalimitedtwo-yearwarranty.ItrequiresthepurchasertocontactBenchDoginwritingwithin30daysofdiscoveringthedefect.Warrantydoesnotapplytodefectsduedirectlyorindirectlytomisuse,abuse,negligenceoraccidents,repairsoralterations,orduetolackofmainte-nance.ItexcludescomponentsandpartsnotmanufacturedbyBenchDog,defectscausedbyfailuretoprovideasuitableinstallationenviron-ment,anddamagecausedbyuseforpurposesotherthanthoseforwhichtheproductwasdesigned.BenchDog,Inc.reservestherighttomakeproductchangeswithoutnoticeandwithoutobligationtomakethesechangesonproductspreviouslysold.Itexcludeswarrantiesoffitnessforaparticularpurpose.

Iftheproductisdefective,wereservetherighttofixit,replaceit,orrefundthecostoftheproducttoyou.Typically,thisresultsinarefund.Allclaimsarelimitedtothetwo-yearclaimsperiod.Wemustreceivetheproductbeforeacreditorrefundwillbeissued.Thewarrantylanguageontheproductorintheproduct’smanualmaycontainadditionallimitations,whichgovern.

FEED DIRECTIONAlwaysfeedtheworkpieceagainstthecutterrotation,asshowninFigure 1.Feedingtheworkpiecewiththecutterrotationiscalled“climbcutting”.Climbcuttingisverydangerous,becausethecut-terwillgrabtheworkpieceandthrustitthesamedirectionasthecutterrotation.Evensmallrouterbitswilloverpoweryourabilitytoholdontotheworkpieceduringaclimbcut.

Donotusethisroutertableuntilyouunderstandproperfeeddirectionandbitrotation.Ifclimbcuttingisstillunclear,askyourretailerforhelp,giveusacall,orreferenceabookonroutertableusage.

CAUTION: NEVER CLIMB CUT!

AVOIDING FENCE TRAPSFencetrapsoccurwhentheworkpieceisfully“trapped”betweentherouterbitandfence.Fencetrapsposetworealconcerns:thepossibilityofclimbfeeding,andhumanexposuretotherouterbit.Asstatedearlier,climbcuttingshouldbeavoidedaslossofcontroloftheoperationisapossibility!

Figure 2showsaclassictraptobeavoided.Whatappearsasanormalfeeddirection(workingfromrighttoleft)iswrong,andwillinsteadproduceaclimbcut.Becausetheworkpieceistrappeditcaneasilybepulledfromone’sgripandthrownwithgreatvelocity.Feedingthestockfromlefttorightwilleliminatetheclimbcutbutnotthedanger.Itwillbedifficulttokeepthestocktightagainstthefenceasthebit’srotationwillthrustthestockawayfromthefence.Also,yourbodywillbedangerouslyexposedtothespinningrouterbit.Thebitguardwillnotprotectyouagainstflyingstock,norguardagainstthislevelofexposure.

WhereasFigure 3isnotatrap,aslongastherouterbitcutsonlypartiallyintothestock.Inotherwords,therouterbitmustnotcompletelycutthroughtheworkpiece.Inthiscut,thebitwillgrabandpushthestocktowardthefence.Thisisgood,asthefencewillcontroltheworkpiecebetterthanyourhands.Typicaldadocutsresemblethisset-up,andarecommonlyperformedonroutertables.Ifthedadoistobewidenedwithtwo(ormore)passes,becarefulnottosetaclassictraporclimbcut.

ADJUSTING THE SUBFENCESThe(2)MDF(mediumdensityfiberboard)subfencesaredesignedtoslidealongthefenceapproximately2”.Thisresultsinarouterbitopen-ingfrom0to4”.

A.“Close”SettingManyapplicationsrequireadjustingthesubfencesclosetotherouterbit.Thisaccomplishesnearlythesamebenefitsofatrue“zeroclearance”setting(see“B”)withoutcuttingthesubfences.Beforetherouteristurnedon,andafterthefenceandrouterbitheightareproperlyadjusted,slidethesubfencestowardthebittoreducethegap.Confirmthattherouterbitcanfreelyrotatewithouttouchingthesubfences!

B.“ZeroClearance”SettingCuttingthesubfencesintotherouterbitprofileproduces“zeroclearance”.Zeroclearanceeliminatesthegapbetweenthefenceandrouterbit.Thispreventstheworkpiecefromgettingpulledintothefencejustbeforetherouterbit.Moreover,azeroclearancesettingachievesacleanercutbecausethesubfencesupportstheworkpiecefibers.Ifatruezeroclearancesettingisdesired,followthesesteps:

1. Adjustthebitheightandfenceposition.Note:thesubfencesmustNOTcontacttherouterbitatthistime.

2. Installthebitguardandsecure.4. Startrouter,andusedustcollection.Fromthebackofthefence,

slightlyloosenthesubfenceknobsandcarefullyslidetheinfeedsubfenceintothespinningrouterbit.Holdontothesubfenceknobs.

5. Afterthesubfencehasreachedtheguidebearingoftherouterbit,fullytightentheknobsonthesubfence.Note:Ifthebitdoesnothaveaguidebearing(i.e.verticalraisedpanelbits),slidethesub-fencehalf-wayintothebit,thentightenthesubfenceknobs.

Caution: Never adjust or slide the substences from the front! Always work from the back with both hands on the adjust-ment knobs.

IMPORTANT NOTES:Theoutfeedsubfenceisrarelysettozeroclearance,becausedoingsohaslittleperformancebenefitandcandamagethesubfence.A“close”settingismoredesirableformostapplications.Settingtheoutfeedsubfencetozerorequiresgreatcarebecausetherouterbitcancauseaportionofthesubfencetochiporbreak.Ifanoutfeedzeroclearanceisabsolutelynecessary,slidetheoutfeedsubfenceveryslowlyintothebittominimizethechippingandtearing.

MDFworksverywellasasubfencebecauseitissofterthanmostwoodsandismuchlesslikelytodamageexpensiverouterbits.MDFalsoretainstheshapeofdelicateprofilesandthusallowspropersup-portforzeroclearancesettings.

Whenadjustingthefence,ensurethatnopartofthealuminumfencebodycouldcontacttherouterbit.

JOINTINGJointingistheprocessofmakingflat,squareandstraightmatingedges.Jointingisnecessarywhentwoboardsareedgegluedtocreatealargerpanel.Itisalsousedto"fit"piecestogether,aswellastotrimstocktosize.

Note:Jointingonaroutertableisnotintendedtoreplaceafreestand-ingpowerjointer,especiallyforstockwiderthan1.25".However,jointingwiththeroutertabledoeshaveadvantagesoverthejointer.First,smallandshortpiecesofwoodcanbesafelyjointedbecausetheopeningofthefencecanbemadeverysmall:about1/2".Second,thequalityofthecutisusuallybetterbecausetherouterbitspinsmuchfasterthanthejointer'scutterhead.Afastercutterspeedisespeciallyusefulonwoodspronetotear-out,likebird'seyemapleandquiltedcherry.Besurenottomovetooslowly,asthiswillleaveburnmarksinyourworkpiece.

Yourfencehasbuilt-injointingslotstoacceptthe(2)smallaluminumjointerbarsthatshippedwithyourroutertable.Installedinpairs,thesebars"shimout"theoutfeedsubfenceeither1/16"or1/32".

SET-UP THE FENCEUnplugrouterandinstalla1/2"diameterstraightorspiralup-cutrouterbit.

Caution:Useonly1/2"shankbitsforjointing.Thebit'scuttinglengthmustnotexceed1.25".Setthebitheightto1.25"orless.

Loosentheoutfeedsubfencemountingknobsandslidebothaluminumjointerbars(alwaysinstalledinpairs!)undertheoutfeedsubfenceineitherthe2ndand4thslots,orthe1stand3rdslots(seeillustration).

Useastraightedgetoadjusttherouterbitandoutfeedsubfencetothesameplane(seeillustrationbelow).Readjustifnecessary.Removestraightedgewhendone.

Slidebothsubfencestowardthebittodecreasetheamountofgaparoundtherouterbit.Besurethesubfencesarenottouchingtherouterbit.Alsobesuretherouterbitisnottouchingthefence'saluminumbody.

Tightenthesubfenceknobsandplacethebitguardinposition.Firstmakeatestcutinscrapstock.Readjustifnecessary.
