David Mesa, Student EmceeDavid is finishing his third year at the University of SanFrancisco School of Law. He is a part-time studentand will graduate in December of 2007. He receivedhis B.A. (2001) in Political Science with a minor inAsian American Studies from the University ofCalifornia at Berkeley.

At USF, David is the first Asian-American male to serveon the Moot Court Board and holds the position of Advocacy Director.He is also on the Executive Board of the Asian Pacific American LawStudent Association and a member of the McAuliffe Honor Society.

Prior to law school, David worked as a law clerk for a personal injury firmand a criminal defense firm. During his first two years in law school, heclerked for a plaintiff’s firm specializing in asbestos and pharmaceuticallitigation. This past summer, he was a summer associate at SedgwickDetert Moran & Arnold LLP and will return to Sedgwick after hegraduates.

David has been an active member of FBANC since his first year in lawschool conducting intake at FBANC clinics, volunteering at networkingevents, and participating in other FBANC events. He recognizes theimportance of being involved in the Filipino-American community andhopes to continue his involvement in FBANC after he passes the bar.

Raymond L. Ocampo, Jr. ScholarshipJoey HipolitoJoey is currently a law student at Boalt Hall School of Law, UC Berkeleyand is interested in issues of labor, employment, and corporategovernance. At Boalt, he is a co-chair of Pilipino American Law Society,outreach coordinator for APALSA, and an Articles Editor for the BerkeleyJournal of Employment and Labor Law. In addition, he volunteers withthe Worker’s Rights Clinic and will be working with the East BayCommunity Law Center next year. Prior to coming to Boalt, he workedfor several years as a Senior Researcher with the United Food andCommercial Workers International Union in Washington, D.C. Inaddition, he served as an executive board member of the Asian PacificAmerican Labor Alliance, Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild, andis a founding member of the DC Chapter of Jobs With Justice Chapter.Joey is from Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from St. Mary’s Collegeof Maryland.

FBANC ScholarshipAbigail RivamonteAbigail is a 2L at the University of San FranciscoSchool of Law. She graduated Cum Laude withHighest Honors from UC San Diego with a Bachelor ofArts in Sociology and a minor in Law and Society.Abigail used to spend her days perfecting her tan whilesipping on Mojitos in her hometown, sunny San Diego.

Now that she’s a law student, she spends her days at the law library, andhas traded in her swimsuit and cocktail for an oversized hoodie and a tallStarbucks white mocha.

Abigail has been an active member of FBANC since Fall of 2004,dedicating numerous hours to the organization and acting as FBANC’sliaison to USF. She was recently elected President of the Asian PacificAmerican Law Students Association. She is also on the ExecutiveBoards of the Equal Justice Society and Public Interest Law Foundation.Abigail was recently awarded the Public Interest Law FoundationScholarship and the Pro Bono Publico Award.

Abigail has worked as a research assistant for a solo practitioner,volunteered with the Asian Law Caucus employment law clinic, andinterned at the U.S. Department of Labor. She is currently a legal internat the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, where she will continue towork during the summer. In the Fall, she will be externing for theHonorable Tomar Mason at the San Francisco Superior Court.

Jose Rizal Achievement Award

Rachel Puno Juliana

Rachel is currently an attorney representing a leading semiconductormanufacturing equipment company in Silicon Valley. Prior to this, sheworked as an associate at the law firms of Gordon & Rees (1998-2000)and Hanson, Bridgett, Marcus, Vlahos & Rudy (2000-2002). She servedas an officer of FBANC for three years, and was FBANC’s presidentfrom 2003-2004. She was awarded as one of the National Asian PacificAmerican Bar Association’s (NAPABA) Best Lawyers Under 40 in 2003.She was also FBANC’s recipient of the Minority Bar Coalition Award in2004. She received her undergraduate degree from U.C. Berkeley in1992 and her law degree from the University of San Francisco LawSchool in 1997.

In 2002, Rachel embarked on an additional career path by running for aseat on the school board in the Jefferson Union High School District,which represents the cities of Daly City, Pacifica, Colma and Brisbane.She won the election and was the highest vote-getter in the race. Whileon the Board, she was the youngest Filipina-American elected official inNorthern California. Rachel also served on the Skyline CollegePresident’s Council, was the Treasurer of the San Mateo County SchoolBoards Association, coached Terra Nova High School’s Mock Trial Teamfor the past five years together with her husband, Chuck Juliana (apartner at Gordon & Rees), and was a member of the Filipino-AmericanTask Force for Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA).

Rachel relocated to New Jersey in March, 2007 with her husband Chuck,who has since started working in Gordon & Rees’ New York office.Rachel continues to work from her home office in New Jersey and hopesto become active in the Filipino community in New Jersey.

The mission of LIKHA Pilipino Folk Ensemble is toeducate and propagate the practice of Philippine folkdance and music traditions. LIKHA (pronounced "lick-ha")is a Tagalog root word meaning creation or creativity.LIKHA was established in May 1992 by a collective oftwelve (12) individuals who came together to celebratePhilippine dance and culture. Under the artistic directionof Rudi C. Soriano, former dance soloist with the premierBayanihan Philippine Dance Company, LIKHA hasnurtured a generation of young community dance enthu-

siasts and now boasts an active membership of over 45 dancers andmusicians. LIKHA is on tour in Europe this summer.

Eduardo Alfonso AngelesSpecial Counsel to the City Council

Eduardo Alfonso Angeles (AKA “Eddie”) currently works forthe Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office as the SpecialCounsel to the City Council. Prior to his appointment to thisposition, Eddie was the General Counsel of the Los AngelesWorld Airports. As chief legal counsel for the Department ofAirports, Eddie was responsible for the supervision ofattorneys and support staff assigned to provide legal counselto the Los Angeles World Airports.

Prior to joining the Airport Division, Eddie was the ChiefAttorney of the Public Protection Team and the GeneralCounsel of the San Francisco Police Department for the S.F.City Attorney’s Office. During his tenure in San Francisco,he also served eight years as a Principal Deputy CityAttorney for the San Francisco International Airport LegalDivision. Eddie received his Bachelor of Arts from theUniversity of California at Santa Barbara and his law degreefrom the University of California, Hastings College of theLaw. He also serves on a variety of community basedorganizations as a member of board of directors.
