I want to congratulate my dear friends and colleagues Jan Kamras, EBL President, and Kari-Anne Opsal, NBF President. I am confident that this will be another very successful bridge event, thus rewarding their enthusiasm and attention to detail. I am sure that Stokke and Norway will welcome and host you in accordance with their high standards of tradition, history and culture. I congratulate all of you on your participation, and am confident that once again, with your exemplary behaviour, you will greatly contribute to the success of the event and demonstrate once again the values of fair-play, friendship and solidarity of our beloved discipline, maintaining our motto “Bridge for Peace”. I look forward to welcoming the teams who will qualify to compete in the 2020 Jaime Ortiz-Patiño Trophy, José Damia- ni Cup, Gianarrigo Rona Trophy and Koç University Trophy. Enjoy your stay and your play, Un abbraccio. JAN KAMRAS EBL PRESIDENT Dear participants, officials, staff and guests, On behalf of the EBL I have the pleasure of welcoming you to the 27th European Youth Team Championships held at the Oslofjord Sports and Convention Centre near Stokke, Norway. I am grateful for the co-operation of the Norwegian Bridge Federation in undertaking to host these championships and particularly to its President Kari-Anne Opsal and General Manager Allan Livgård, without whom this would not have been possible. Thank you my friends. It is particularly satisfying to note the record participation in the U16 category, certainly in part helped by the EBL’s financial support to those teams. I am convinced that this will ultimately also increase the participation in the U21 category. You may note some changes compared to past editions – reduced entry fees for U26 Women and larger discounts for teams not having attended the previous two championships, amongst others. The EBL is emphasising high ethical standards and good table manners, which I trust you will live up to and serve as a good example for the “grown-ups”. Show the opponents the same respect that you want them to show you, and you will make many new friends for life. Of course you will be fierce competitors at the same time! I wish you lots of success in the competition and a great time during these championships. DAY ONE BBO MATCHES

KARI-ANNE OPSALNORWEGIAN BRIDGE FEDERATION PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,The Norwegian Bridge Federation is very pleased to welcome you to Oslofjord Convention Center in Stokke, Vestfold for the 27th European Youth Bridge Team Championships.

The Norwegian Bridge Federation undertook to organise these championships at the request of the EBL. Norway is a high-cost country, and that makes it challenging to

organise everything at a cost that is affordable to all participants. We have put a lot of effort and money into just that, and hope that you will have a good time here at Oslofjord.

It’s no secret that organising these championships is a lot of work. Nevertheless, we think it is worthwhile because of the good work being done over the last few years in Norway to recruit junior players. We now have 50% more juniors than just 3 years ago, and that number is still rising. By organising these championships in conjunction with our annual youth camp, we can show all our new juniors the possibilities that lies ahead – all of them can be potential bridge stars of the future!

Oslofjord CC and the surrounding area have a lot to offer. We hope you will take a swim, go for a hike along the ocean front trail or play some kind of sports while you’re here. Playing in a junior championship is not all about winning – it’s important to have fun, make new friends from all over the world and experience the thrill of representing your country.

We wish all of you a good championship. Not all of you can win, but by playing and having fun, you are still winning. Play fair, play well and give your opponents a smile!

Kari-Anne OpsalPresidentNorwegian Bridge Federation

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR PLAYERSGENERAL

BIDDING, ALERTS AND EXPLANATIONS

DURING AND AFTER PLAY

Smoking is prohibited in the playing area.

Mobile phones and electronic devices capable of communication must be switched off in the playing area and bevisible at the table at all times. Random checks will be made.

All participants at the Championship venue must visibly wear their official identification badge. Players must wear their NBO uniforms/shirts.

Players are requested to be seated 5 minutes before the scheduled start of play. Any team not seated and ready toplay at the start of a period of play will be subject to automatic VP penalties.

During play, players (and NPCs) may converse only in English unless all agree to use some other common language at their own risk. TD adjudication is in English only.

Line- up procedure : Both captains submit their line - ups without knowing the line- up of their opponents. The procedure will be announced at the captains’ meeting and in the Daily Bulletin.

Each opponent must be given a System Card at the start of a session.

It is the responsibility of the alerting player to ensure that their screen-mate is aware of the Alert. Requests for explanations, and the responses thereto, shall be made in writing.

A player’s first call should touch the extreme left of their own segment of the bidding tray, with subsequent calls overlapping neatly and evenly to the right.

Dummy or Declarer removes the bidding tray from the table, and Dummy or Declarer puts the board back in the centre of the table.

The opening lead must be made before the screen aperture is opened and Declarer or Dummy opens the aperture or calls for it to be opened.

A card should be played towards partner in a consistent manner and placed on the table in the same position eachtime. Once played, the player should not vary the orientation of the card.

Quitted tricks should be placed consistently in a neat row in front of the player, evenly overlapping.

If a player finds an opponent not following any of these rules, even after a warning, the proper recourse is to call aTD.

If a player should claim that the responsibility for the slow play is with their opponents, they will do so by calling a TD.

TDs are authorized to remove boards when play has not finished in the allotted time or when slow play may lead toplay not being finished in time.

If a player on the side of the screen receiving the tray considers there has been a break in tempo, creating possibleunauthorised information, they should call the Director and may do so at any time before the opening lead is madeand the aperture opened.

Players should agree the score, ensure it is entered correctly in the bridgemate and leave the playing room as quickly and quietly as possible. Players are strictly forbidden to watch play at any table. In respect of scores the protest time of all matches played in a day ends at the starting time of the first match on theday following, and for the final day’s play two hours after the official finishing time of the final match but, in any case, not later than the official starting time of the Closing Ceremony. In respect of scores which are manifestly incorrect, protest time ends prior to the start of the penultimate round.

The time for a request for a TD ruling or for a review of a ruling already received ends, respectively, 30 minutes after the end of the match or 30 minutes after receipt of ruling.

DUTCH DIARIES EXTENDEDKees Tammens

My activities in junior bridge started in 1982 when I was appointed, together with Hans Kreijns (in 1966 the first Dutch world champion), as member of the Dutch Youth Committee. In the eighties my dear friend and formidable partner Erik Kirchhoff acted as trainer of the Dutch juniors, winning the European title in 1986 followed by victory in the first Junior World Championships in 1987 (around the corner from my home in Amsterdam!). Erik always insisted that I performed as sparring partner for the juniors. At the end of 1990 Erik resigned and probably convinced the Dutch Bridge federation that I should succeed him. The rest is history and until my own retirement in 2015 my life was fully connected to junior bridge.

With N/S vulnerable, The Greek junior opens as North 2] (5]+4 in a minor, less than an opening bid. What do you overcall as East with:

1992: One day before we travelled to Palaiseau, close to Paris, my captain called me with the stunning announcement he withdrew from the team in my first Junior European Championships. No reason was given so I had to combine the duties of npc and coach. Luckily Martin Pattenier drove one of the juniors to France and agreed to stay some days to assist me in the daily activities. Unfortunately (not for him but for me) Martin had to get back to work and I was left with a busy job in my first championship as junior coach. I had big expectations (like always) for my team consisting of Vincent, Dejan, Jaap, Mark, Onno, Jean Paul. However, the opposition proved to be very strong; with great fighting spirit we managed to keep the top-three in sight. Black Saturday (with losses against Finland, Germany and Estonia) became our Waterloo and we tumbled to a modest tenth place. I collected interesting boards and published this in a small booklet: in Dutch: ‘10 voor ons, 10 weg’ (ten imps for us and ten for them).

Onno Eskes as East followed the ‘Hamman-rule’(when you are in doubt what to bid and one of the choices is 3NT, bid it!). After a heart lead for the ace declarer however had to choose which minor would break. He decided to rely on opponents signals by playing {A. South as well as North played the smallest diamond. So unless both opponents were lying, diamonds would not break as they were playing reverse count signals. Onno switched to }A and a second club for ten tricks.

How do you play 3NT on the lead of [4?‘Have you seen Board 9 in round twelve”. You

can be sure one of the editors of the daily bulletin has spotted a great bid or play. A special room in every event is reserved for the writers for the bulletin. In that way I (since 1977 I publish bridge stories on a regular basis) got acquainted with very diligent men as Patrick (RIP), Brian, Mark, Philip and local bulletin editors. Usually, when I enter the hall where the junior championships are played, I meet and greet Brian Senior who is always very cooperative in publishing my stories as ‘Dutch Diaries’. During those championships in Antalya (2000) daily bulletin editor Mark Horton invented the name ‘Kees for the defence’ for a series of articles about exquisite defensive plays. I still have the idea of writing a book with that title. Enormous swings (16 or 17+ IMPs) got the nickname ‘Dinosaurus’ with the advice for juniors NOT to look for these numbers.

Declarer, Maarten Schollaardt, won the first trick with {Q, East encouraging with {5. After some thought declarer played a small spade from dummy to queen and ace in West, who returned a second diamond for jack and ace. The heart jack was

covered with queen and ace. A small club from dummy went to the queen and king in West. The moment of truth. West was completely unaware of the devilish coup by declarer so played a third diamond and with help of the }J finesse declarer was home with nine tricks. Antalya 2000 ended with the silver medal and Bas, Sjoert, Maarten, Marcel, Niek, Bart and yours truly celebrated this at the prize-giving including a fine rock-and-roll band (rumours state I danced with the wife of the major of Antalya; of course I completely have forgotten that).

In 2007 we travelled to Jesolo. For the first time with girls on the Dutch junior team. This created new problems. Of course the girls did not play in the morning match since they were entitled to a beauty sleep. Late in the evening they dressed up handsomely, went out on the town and caused many juniors from other countries to go to bed very late. Marion Michielsen and Meike Wortel gave the event a special accent and employed a special weapon: the length (better shortness) of their skirts. Many a junior from abroad could not keep his eyes off our beautiful girls and – what is very important – allowed them to take the major part of the IMPs. The championship went very well for us and we were heading for the silver medal, at a respectable distance from a very strong Italian team. With two rounds to be played Italy took on the Estonian/Latvian team and we met Austria. After a couple of boards we were up some 20 IMPs and Italy was down the same number. Could it be possible? Yes, 23-7 for us and the Italian juniors went under water with 3-25. We were leading! In the last match we faced Norway, traditionally a high obstacle for us: it ended in a draw (14-16) and we kept Italy at 5 VPs distance: it became very, very late that night in Jesolo when Marion, Meike, Bob, Merijn, Jacco, Vincent celebrated their golden medal.

West's lead was a small trump for the ace in South. Declarer, Marion Michielsen, played a small spade to the king in dummy. A club from North and East put in the jack, declarer ducking for West's ace. The junior West rather innocently continued with a trump for the ace. The {10 was overtaken with jack in dummy and a flying finesse for }Q gave declarer an overtrick! Comparing scores: “650. A push we have also 650”. With a closer look it turned out both 650s could be added. Now you understand why the bulletin editor described the Dutch girls as ‘handle with care’.

For myself as a coach there were still the European Championships of 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015 to come and, although the Dutch juniors fought a fierce battle and sometimes came close, there was no place for us on the podium. With, from 2009, Agnes Snellers and Wubbo de Boer as fantastic captains, the Dutch juniors looked for higher goals, winning the Junior World Championships in 2012, followed by silver in 2014 and bronze in 2018. With, after 2015, myself in the role of supporter and kibitzer, in which capacity I will also be present in Stokke, I wish all participants, coaches, captains, organisers, officials and, last but not least, the daily bulletin staff, a great tournament.

THE 2019 APBF CHAMPIONSHIPSBrian Senior

The 2019 APBF Zonal Championships, qualifiers for this year's World Championships in Wuhan, China, were held in Singapore in the middle of June. These were a few of the more interesting deals from the championships.

Board 8. Dealer West. None Vul. [ A 9 2 ] K 8 4 3 { 10 9 } Q 6 4 2 [ 7 4 3 [ K 8 ] Q 10 7 6 ] A J 5 { K Q 4 2 { A J 7 } J 7 } A K 10 9 5 [ Q J 10 6 5 ] 9 2 { 8 6 5 3 } 8 3

In an early round of the Open series, East declared 3NT on the lead of the queen of spades. For most it was a question of cashing the top clubs to see if the queen fell and, when it did not, falling back on the heart finesse, a classic combining of chances. But how would you play if North won the ace of spades and returned the two?

That is how Australia's Sartaj Hans defended, and his opponent fell for it. Assuming that the two was an honest card, the spades were either four-four, when a loser could be afforded to either opponent, or six-two, when a loser could be afforded to North. So declarer won the second spade and played ace, king and ten of clubs, and the five-three spade break meant that he was one off in what most would claim was a laydown contract as the cards lie.

Hans was again the star on this next deal, from Australia's match with arch-rivals New Zealand.

Nunn overcalled 2} and Bach splintered in clubs then accepted his partner's sign-off in 4[. Nunn led his singleton heart to the jack and ace and Cornell drew trumps in three rounds then knocked out the king of hearts. He had 11 easy tricks with the aid of the diamond finesse for +450.

Michael Ware did not overcall and watched his opponents get to the dangerously high level of 5[. Ware led a trump, Sartaj Hans winning dummy's queen and leading a club to the king and ace. Back came a second spade, again won in dummy, this time to lead a heart to the nine. That held the trick – good news for Hans, who still had work to do. He drew the outstanding trump then took the diamond finesse, cashed the {A, ruffed a diamond, ruffed a club, and exited with dummy's last diamond.

Tislevoll won that and, down to nothing but hearts, had to lead round to dummy's queen to give the contract. That was a nice recovery from Hans to flatten the board at +450.

Had Tislevoll put in the jack on the first heart play, declarer would have won and drawn trumps then set up two more heart tricks, and the diamond finesse would again have provided the eleventh trick.

This next deal comes from Japan v China Hong Kong in the Mixed series.

The Nodas got to what looks to be the normal contract of 3NT. Kon led the seven of clubs to the king and ace and Ho continued with the eight of clubs to dummy's queen. Yuko played a third club to hand followed by four rounds of spades, pitching two diamonds. Ho won and returned the nine of diamonds to the ten and jack, and all Kon could do was to cash the ace of diamonds; nine tricks for +400.

Mok became declarer in 4[, against which Mariko led the nine of diamonds to the ten and jack and Tetsuya switched to the ten of spades. Mok won the king and played a club to the queen and ace, won the spade return with the ace and played king

of clubs and another club to the ten. Next he ruffed a diamond before playing a heart to the ace and taking a heart discard on the jack of clubs. Mariko ruffed that and played back her remaining trump and Mok had to concede a heart at the end for down one; –50 and 10 IMPs to Japan.

Suppose that, after ruffing a diamond, declarer had played the queen followed by his last trump to East. Down to only hearts, East must return that suit and declarer wins dummy's ace and cashes the jack of clubs. That squeezes West in the red suits and either the {K or, in practice, the ten of hearts, becomes declarer's tenth trick.

This next one comes from China v Chinese Taipei in the Open.

Both E/W pairs bid to the decent spade slam. Chen/Zhuang followed a fairly standard transfer sequence, while there was a lot of artificiality in the sequence of Fong/Zhang.

Shi led the king of hearts against Fong, who won the ace and ruffed a heart, led a diamond to his jack, and ruffed another heart. A diamond to the ace allowed him to take a third heart ruff, after

which he cashed the ace and queen of spades, came to hand with the king of clubs and cashed the [K. The three-three diamond split meant that he had shown us all how to make 7[; +1010.

Luo too led the king of hearts to declarer's ace. Chen followed exactly the same line to 13 tricks and a flat board.

The simple line of drawing trumps appears to need four diamond tricks or a squeeze for the twelfth trick, which is not great odds. Superficially, the dummy reversal, as played by both our declarers, requires trumps three-two and the {Q with South – declarer is an entry short if the diamond is with North – but when diamonds play for four tricks he will usually survive a four-one trump break, just losing to the long trump at the end, which improves the overall chance of success.

Not for the first time in our bridge lives, we see a strong and artificial 2} opening pre-empt our own auction. Maybe that South hand is just too strong to not open 2}, but N/S would surely be better placed if they could start 1[ – 1NT – 3{ – 3NT. South would continue with 4{, but they should then be able to stop at a lower level than was actually achieved. The auctions at our two tables after opening 2} may have been perfectly reasonable, in context, but neither could be described as a thing of beauty, which also applies to the final contracts reached.

The slam didn't last long. Gill led his singleton spade and collected a ruff. Though Samuel Wan got the trumps right, that was only to allow him to escape for down one and –100.

Tony Lau led a heart against the inelegant 5[ contract in the other room, Nabil Edgtton winning the ace, perforce. Edgtton played the king of spades and, when the jack appeared on his left, continued with a low spade to Ng's ten. Ng returned the jack of hearts but Edgtton could win the ace and cross to hand with a diamond to play another spade. With no heart left with which to force declarer, Ng was powerless to come to more than just the ten and ace of trumps. Edgtton had done well to come to 11 tricks for +650 and another 13 IMPs to Australia.

Mak led the queen of diamonds against 2[ and continued with the jack when that held the trick.

When that too scored, he switched to the six of hearts and Supeno rose with the ace and led a spade to his ten. That won, of course, so he continued with a second spade for the queen and ace, and Lai got out with the jack of spades to declarer's king. Supeno led a heart to the king and tried to ruff out the ace of diamonds but that didn't work so he exited with a heart, hoping for an endplay. No, Lai won the heart and had the ace of diamonds to play so Supeno ruffed that and led a club to the nine. Though that lost to the jack, now he had the hoped for endplay and the club return ensured two club tricks and eight in all for +110.

Zen led the six of spades against 1NT doubled, Parisian ducking Wan's queen and also ducking the spade return. Zen won the [K and played the eight of spades to the ace. Parisian, with no likeky entry to the dummy, led a low diamond from hand, the ten losing to the king. Wan played three rounds of hearts, Parisian winning the queen and crossing to dummy with a diamond to cash the thirteenth heart before taking two more diamond tricks. the contract was down only one for –100, so there was no swing on the board.

Had Zen returned the two of spades at trick three, suit-preference for clubs, Wan might have found the low club switch instead of three rounds of hearts. that goes to the ten and queen, and the best declarer can do is to cash out the diamonds for down two. Of course, even with such a signal, a club switch may look too dangerous from West's perspective.
