It becomes a breeding ground for flies and mosquitos and that is when you have to remember that Lydenburg Primary School is just around the corner and Genie’s Pre-School is across the road from this. Talking about the Primary School, the roads are un-driveable and residents and parents try their best to fill the potholes but it is more a case of filling a road as there is practically no tar left. Just a little further is a park where children should be able to play, but the veld grass is so tall and the equipment in such a bad condition it is too dangerous to allow your children to relax there. It was a long time ago that one could hear the laughing of children on this forgotten playground. Thaba Chweu Municipality you should be ashamed! The people who live with these disgusting problems are the very same people who always have open pockets when you fail to meet your basic service delivery obligations and who pay their municipal accounts just like many other residents! ONS praat deesdae van “fonts”. Dit is die miljoene lettertipes wat op jou rekenaar beskikbaar is. Ek is geleer net Arial en Times New Roman werk in ’n koerant, want dit lees maklik. Ek hou van lettertipes wat maklik lees, want ek lees vinnig. So Tahoma werk ook vir my. Maar die kunssinnige tipes hou van goed soos Broadway of Brush Script of Stencil of

Century Gothic of Cooper Black.

Nou verneem ek daar is in Amerika ’n reuse hoeha oor lettertipes in die r e g s w ê r e l d . S k y n b a a r i s hofdokumente daar so ’n chaos dat niemand dit meer kan lees nie.Ek het die probleem al in die staatsdiens sien inkruip, soos sekretaresses met mekaar wedywer om die ingewikkeldste of “mooiste” lettertipe te gebruik.Ek verstaan die krulletjies en strepies op ’n verjaardagkaartjie, of in ’n koerant se moedersdag blad of ’n advertensie. Dit moet aandag trek en dit is mooi.Maar in ’n wetenskaplike publikasie,

of artikel, storie of hofdokument is die doel om inligting maklik en vinnig oor te dra. Lettertipes gebruik ook nie dieselfde spasie nie. Op 10 punt grootte is Tahoma groter as Arial en Times New Roman meer kompak. As jy dus beperkte spasie het (soos in ’n koerant) en meer wil sê, gebruik Times New Roman.Ek stem saam dat die wêreld maar vaal sal wees as alle teks dieselfde is, maar onthou die mens is ’n wese van gewoonte. As elke reëltjie in ’n advertensie in ’n ander font is, gaan dit mens se oog vang ja, maar dit is te betwyfel of mense dit in diepte sal lees. Dit is gewoon te veel moeite. As jy dus ’n spesiale font wil gebruik, moenie te ver van die pad af gaan nie en hou jou teks in die dokument dan in daardie font.

Mnr. Pieter Krügel het sy wedervaringe met Paardeplaats se wilde perde onlangs gedeel:In die middel sestiger jare was die eienaar van hierdie plaas oom John de Beer. Sy liefde vir perde was die behoud van die wilde trop wat vrylik daar rond geloop het. Volgens oom John was daar 'n stuk of tien wilde perde toe hy die plaas gekoop het, en volgens die vorige eienaar en baie van die vroeër geslagte het Paardeplaats sy naam gekry vir die gesonde toestande daar vir perde. Afrika perdesiekte word deur 'n muggie versprei en veral die laagliggende gedeeltes in Lydenburg was kwesbaar. Vanaf vroeg Februarie tot einde Mei as die eerste ryp kom was die vrektes op sy hoogste. 'n Ou gesegde: Maart vrek hulle met 'n vaart, April vrek die wat wil en Mei is alles verby, was bekend aan perde-eienaars. Daarom het almal hulle perde vir die tydperk hoog in die berg gaan los en weer kom haal as die tyd verby is, maar so het party perde in die klowe agter gebly en met die tyd wild geword en begin troppe vorm en aangeteel.Met oom John se koms het van sy plaas perde ook met die troppe begin meng, sy hings Whisky het die kenmerkende wit breë bles geteel soos vandag nog gesien kan word. Ek het in 1967 met oom John bevriend geraak en omdat ek kennis gehad het om

perde te tem het hy my gevra of ek nie vir Whisky wil vang om weer mak te maak nie, dan kan ek vir my 'n merrie vang vir betaling. So het ek op die die berg gaan kamp en met baie moeite na 'n week vir Whisky en my merrie gevang en afgebring na Rooidraai, waar ek gebly het en begin om hulle af te rig. Min wetend dat dit perdesiekte tyd is. Binne 'n week in altwee dood. Oom John kry my toe jammer en sê ek kan vir my 'n jong hings kom vang.Ek het my perd opgesaal die Vrydag na skool met en met 'n pakperd is ek berg toe en Sondag is ek terug met 'n pragtige bont hings van twee jaar. Hy is gedoop Ramsis en dis later aan oom Bokkie Pfeifer verkoop. In die sewentigerjare het oom John my weer genader want die perde het te veel geword. Ek moes al die troppe se hingste uitvang. My vriend Willie Roeloffzse het my gaan help en ons vang toe nege tropleiers wat ek toe tem en verkoop hulle vir R90 stuk aan ’n man van die Transkei. Ek het nou nog 'n brief wat hy vir my geskryf het om te bedank oor die goeie perde wat ek aan hom verkoop het.Min mense sal my glo, maar ek en Willie het destyds hierdie perde in 'n ou klipkraal met die voete ingejaag. Met die hulp van die plaas se kinders het ons takke bo-op die mure gepak om die perde binne te hou. Voor sononder het ons twee hingste gevang en getem dat hulle ophou met spring. Die volgende oggend met eerste lig het ons op Meelsak en Whisky opgeklim met

net 'n toom en sonder saal en hulle vrye teuls gegee om vir ons die ander perde te wys in die kloof.Oom John was baie bekommerd en het vroeg van die dorp gekom met 'n mandjie kos en was verstom toe ons nie by die kampplek is nie en met sy Puch Jeep ons kom soek. Vir jare kon hy nie uitgepraat raak oor die gesig wat hy gesien het nie. Toe hy op die krans stilhou en met sy verkyker aanskou hoe jaag ek en Willie op die wilde hingste se rue terug. Dit klink seker soos in 'n ‘Cowboy’-film, maar dis hoe ek en my vriend Willie met die perde gewerk het en tot vandag boer ons altwee nog met perde. Oom John het toe die plaas verkoop en op 'n stadium het Johan du Plessis (oud Minister PTC du Plessis) se seun die plaas besit. Daar was hartseer gevolg ook. ’n Slaghuiseienaar van Lydenburg het ’n kontrak gekry vir perdevleis en skelm gaan perde jag in die berg en so die wilde perde amper uitgeroei dat daar net vyf oor gebly het. Op ’n stadium het Ferdi Hartzer (eienaar van Laske Nakke) hom weer ontferm oor die perde en so is hulle vandag weer vry op Brian en Gerda Whitehorn se plaas, en Whisky se wit bles kan nou nog in sy nageslag gesien word. Op 'n stadium het oom John ’n Arabiese hings van die Vrystaat laat kom en hom losgelaat tussen die wilde perde, maar die hings kon nie die mas opkom nie en het slegs 'n paar grys vullens geteel voor hy dood is. Dit was voor die perde gejag is!

LAPSAR Lydenburg het gedurende die week die grootste skenking nog ontvang van hondekos van Hinterland Town & Country af in Lydenburg met die samewerking van Pet Supreme. Twee dames by Pet Supreme, Marti en Cornelia, het saam met Hinterland Town & Country aan die werk gespring en besluit om ‘n verskil te maak. Die skenking is ‘n enorme honderd vyf en twintig sakke van agt kilogram elk wat ‘n hele ton uitmaak. Wat dit nog meer besonders maak is die feit dat dit ‘n baie goeie gebalanseerde hondekos is wat baie belangrik is vir die diere. Lapsar wil hiermee ‘n besonderse dank rig aan Pet Supreme sowel as Hinterland Town & Country Lydenburg. Hierdie skenking beteken dat daar genoegsame hondekos is vir so te sê die hele winter. Johan Vercueil van Lapsar wil ook graag baie dankie sê aan al hul ander ondersteuners wat so gereeld bydraes lewer.

A mind-boggling 11.5 million vehicles are now affected by faulty Takata airbags produced in Japan. Combined with all the previous Takata airbag-related recalls, an estimated 6.5 million Toyota-made (including Daihatsu) and Nissan automobiles have been recalled to date and now more Honda products have been added to the list.No longer just a foreign problem; South African owners are affected. Toyota SA said its Corolla, RunX and Yaris models built between 2002 and 2007 are affected; as are Rav4, Hilux and Fortuners built from July 2003 to December 2005. The safety recall relates to moisture intrusion into the airbags over time that may result in involuntary and unsafe deployment. Nissan South Africa confirmed that certain Almeras produced between 2004 and 2007 could be affected.Toyota, Honda and Nissan report that no deaths or injuries relate to the safety recall, while a fatal incident in January in the US was believed to be linked to a faulty Takata inflator. HERE’s our first sighting of the all-new Ford GT supercar on a public road, courtesy of Car magazine UK.An early-days prototype, it’s clad with ill-fitting body panels, exposed fasteners, temporary headlights and a complete absence of paint – and it looks rather fantastic, don’t you think?Presumably those exhaust outlets will shrink a bit before launch? Hopefully, they’re most certainly temporary, as are the tail-lights and headlights. That could be a clue that they’re going to change from the designs we saw on the original show car, or simply that they’re not yet ready to be fitted to this particular test car.What hasn’t changed, however, is that incredible layered bodywork towards the rear. The extent to which you can see clean through the free space between the outboard radiators

(uncovered by grilles on this test car) and the GT’s tapered central section is really quite striking.Those equally temporary-looking mirrors appear smaller than the blade-like items on the original show car – let’s hope the driver takes care when he’s parking.The Ford GT supercar is currently scheduled for launch towards the end of 2016, after the new Focus RS has been brought to market. While the iconic GT40 original and its 2004 reinterpretation relied on V8s with plenty of cubic inches to provide the power, the 2016 Ford GT gets with the downsizing times with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6, driving the rear wheels. Wolfsburg is preparing a trio of hot hatches to wow the go-faster brigade on the banks of Lake Worthersee – including this rather wild Golf GTE Sport concept which follows the Golf GTI Clubsport everyone can’t get enough of.The GTE Sport is a concept car, granted, as you might judge from the bespoke carbonfibre bodywork shrouding the 300kW innards, but those ponies are achieved through some clever plug-in hybrid mechanicals.The GTE could be a whole new type of electrified GTI of the future and around 200 000 visitors to Worthersee this weekend will ogle the radical futuristic vision of hot hatches. It’ll sit alongside the production-bound GTI Clubsport (Golf GTI’s 40th edition celebrated in 2016), and another mainly cosmetic apprentice special Golf.The GTE Sport has what Volkswagen calls an ‘electric propshaft,’ as the hybrid system powers the rear axle. Performance is predictably rapid: zero to 100kph in just 4.3sec and a top speed is claimed at 280kph. Yet this

Dit is die BMW GS 650, 800 en 1200 reekse, Yamaha se Tenere en Super Tenere, KTM reeks, die Truimphs, Hondas, Suzukis en ander soorte wat in die klas val. Dié fietse is toerfietse wat ewe maklik op teer en grond kan ry. Dan is daar die viersilinder superfietse vir teerpaaie wat geweldig vinnig is en laastens die “Cruisers” wat Harley Davidson en verskeie ander make insluit. WHEEL rims manufactured from metals other than steel have been around for a very long time. In the 1920s, for example, Bugattis were already using aluminium to save weight at the time when many car wheels were still being made from wood!It took quite a while before more affordable sportscars started using alloys to convey sportier appearances than the rather plain pressed-steel wheels, even if they were treated and painted. As for the other sporty solution – spoked wire wheels – these were complex, time consuming to lace and prone to corrosion.Commonly referred to as “mag” wheels because early castings were initially being manufactured from magnesium, these days aluminium is the preferred metal because magnesium, which sits above aluminium on the galvanic table, is more susceptible to corrosion and cracking, especially when exposed to salty air or water. Magnesium also has less ductility and therefore it’s more brittle than aluminium alloys. Nevertheless, continuous improvements in the tricky art of alloying various elements with the lightweight metal has meant that strength and toughness replaced brittleness, which meant that mass (and therefore unsprung weight) was reduced. Fast track to the 21st century and we see that today very few cars still utilise steel rims.Apart from reduced mass, other benefits include aluminium’s inherent thermal conductivity that provides increased heat dissipation from braking energy, making these types of rims particularly useful for racing. Of course, given the many shapes that are easily designed to have more than sufficient strength, there’s an abundance of styles and finishes to choose from. Some manufacturers favour classic designs that are reminiscent of wire spoked rims.Casting vs. forging: The two methods used for production are casting and forging. Because it improves the grain structure in metals, forged wheels are stronger than cast wheels. It is, however, a more expensive process. Rotary forging, which uses heat, pressure and rotation to increase strength as well as save weight, is sometimes employed.

Low pressure or high pressure die casting are the m o r e c o m m o n m e t h o d s o f p r o d u c t i o n , however. Getting the right mix of a l loys invo lves some interesting m e t a l l u r g i c a l sciences and the m o s t c o m m o n elements used to i m p r o v e t h e s t r e n g t h o f

aluminium are silicon, magnesium, copper, vanadium, zinc and tin. Getting the percentages of each alloying element just right adds to the complexity of the process.Some factors to remember before buying a set of wheelsDiameter: First is the most obvious – wheel size. This should match your existing rim unless, of course, you want to go bigger. If this is your aim, get some expert advice first. Your tyres will probably need a smaller aspect ratio (lower profile) to keep the overall tyre diameter the same. Be prepared to put up with a much firmer ride.Width: Apart from the appearance of alloys, increased width of tyres is what buyers most would want to increase to give their vehicles that “race car” look and improve grip.Pcd: Next is the PCD (pitch circle diameter) of the bolts. Naturally your studs or bolts must fit perfectly through the holes of the new wheels, so as to match the original rims’ specification. This figure is the distance from the centre of wheel to the line that runs through the centre of all the studs.Spigot: Another aspect that cannot be changed is size of the spigot hole. This locates the rim on the hub. If the hole is bigger, you will need a spacer to take up the gap. The

wheel studs are supposed to locate the wheel, not take all the stresses of static and dynamic loading.Offset: This is the distance between the mounting point of the wheel to the hub and the centre line of the tyre. An increased offset has a similar effect to adding spacers between the hub and the wheel. Question: I'm trying to get some information regarding illegal building alterations made to community property. One of the owners is being kicked out of his unit because it is in his divorced wife's name and she is selling the apartment. The person living there has decided that he will move into the staff quarters/storeroom area (I'm not sure if it's sleeping quarters or storage space) - basically three separate rooms next to each other, and we use one room to keep the garden equipment. With the consent of the 4 trustees and not all the owners (10 units in the complex) as well as no council approval plans, he has broken through the walls of the 3 rooms and added doorways. The rest of the owners do not want this to go ahead, as it is communal property. I was hoping to find out what our rights are as owners and what steps we can take to make sure this does not go ahead. Carryn Durham, specialist sectional titles lawyer at Paddocks, advises: In terms section 38(i) of the Sectional Titles Act 95 of 1986 (“the Act”) the Trustees may let a portion of the common property to any owner or occupier by means of a short-term lease (a lease for a period of less than ten years). Therefore, the Trustees are entitled to lease the common property room (staff quarters) to the ex-husband of an owner, as he would qualify as an occupier. Owners of sections own the common property in undivided shares. The body corporate is obliged to properly maintain the common property and keep it in a state of good and serviceable repair, which involves the preservation of the common property and its restoration to its original condition. The basic principle is that an owner cannot change any part of the common property without the consent of every other owner, unless the change is specifically authorised by the rules. In regard to any improvements to the common property the management rules distinguish between 'luxurious' and 'non-luxurious' improvements. They contain no guidelines as to what is to be considered luxurious and what is not, but it is suggested that any improvement that is useful and necessary is non-luxurious and any improvement that is desirable but not necessary is luxurious. Examples of non-luxurious improvements would be the replacement of an unserviceable iron roof with a slate roof or the installation of a security system in a scheme that has experienced problems with unauthorised persons gaining access to the property. Examples of luxurious improvements would be the tiling of a serviceable concrete floor with marble or the erection of a squash court. Whether the breaking down of the walls of the three rooms is a luxurious or non-luxurious improvement will depend on whether it was necessary and useful or desirable. Either way it will require owner consent. In terms of PMR 33(1) the trustees may, if the owners by unanimous resolution so decide, effect or remove improvements of a luxurious nature on the common property. If the trustees wish to effect non-luxurious improvements to the common property they must give written notice to all owners. The notice must indicate the intention to proceed with the improvement after a stated date not less than thirty days from the date of posting and provide details of the proposed improvements. The details must include the costs of the proposed improvements. www.property24.com

You can also register as a potential citizen scientist as an atlaser when visiting this site getting a registration number, which will enable you to immediately get started after our workshop.Any person with relatively good bird identification skills can participate in this project. Ernst Retief, from BirdLife South Africa, will present a workshop on how to contribute to this fantastic project. He will discuss the atlasing protocol, in other words the rules of how to record the birds, and how the atlasing blocks can be identified, using only a web interface such as Internet Explorer. He will then also discuss how to submit the data using the internet. Phone apps will also be demonstrated for those birders who want to use this technology. The workshop will be interactive in nature and the final aim will be that any Atlaser who completes the workshop will be able to submit an atlas card with no problem!The workshop will start at 09:00 and should be finished around 13:00 at the latest. A great number of volunteers, teachers and sponsors came together to make the Beski School Soccer Tournament possible. Four farm schools competed against each other over the course of a few weeks till the final play offs on 15 May. Mr Jacobus Kiti (a tournament organisers) of Beski School Tournament thanked

everyone who helped to make this event happen. The farm schools really enjoyed it. In the photo’s are Bosfontein School in green and white playing against Enkeldoring School. It was a very tough football final as

both finalists didn't want to lose, but Bosfontein won 3-1. The games were well supported. The main sponsor was Mr Segweka Riba who gave the schools soccer kits each and also transported the schools from day one.

Bosfontein Primary School were the overall league winners and Enkeldoorn came second.
