Polio Plus Drive36% of the way to goal..and a long way to go!

Our goal is $3,500 this year, which is matched $2 for every $1 donated by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for a total of $10,500 towards polio eradication. Our timeline is between now and June 30, 2014 (President John’s term). See John for details.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE CONTINUED...

A beautiful day on the hill overlooking Montecito and a full house to hear Del render the invocation, flag salute, and two verses of a favorite from My Fair Lady’s “Wouldn’t it be Loverly” with an English Cockney accent (see discussion below). We doff our hats to Del for a great start to our meeting. Several guests and visiting Rotarians made Lynda glad as we continue to make progress on our membership goals; welcome to Lew who is transferring from the Calabasas Rotary Club to join our club… once he gets back from a month in Hawaii!

We had several Happy Bucks including Jeff Kern who was either paying a fine for imposing on a fellow Rotarian for a favor or paying a Happy Buck that he wasn’t in the newspaper again; either way, we appreciate it Jeff! Murray relayed the details of Australia Day celebrated this last week; a notable dent in the available beer on the planet. Both Lynda and John celebrated having family in town and visits coincidentally to the El Encanto… sounds like Lynda had a great time! Lynda touched on the great input regarding “One good reason for being a Rotarian” and will be summarizing and reporting in an upcoming issue of AXIS. It looks like friendship, fellowship, and “doing good in this world” are top reasons for the members in our Club. Thank you for the insights on your personal reasons for engaging Rotary in your life.

For our ABCs of Rotary, Bill Dial filled us in on the date of Rotary’s first meeting in Chicago… that would be February 23, 1905. That makes February a special month for Rotary and for each of us.

As a surprise guest and to help with the award of “Rotarian of the Month” we were joined by Tom Selleck (nee, Mark Magid) doing the honors of presenting the award for Rotarian of the Month for February 2014. As a Rotarian who has done so much over the years, continues to go above and beyond the call of duty, and always has a good thing to say about pretty much everyone… the award goes to our own Carolyn Brown. We will learn more as our fearless reporters Aaron and James investigate this great Rotarian in our midst.

Carolyn took her minute at the mike to promote the upcoming Golf Tournament, cocktails and dinner party (mark your calendar for Thursday May 15, 2014 at the

Montecito Country Club); she has her team together, is making progress with sponsors and foursomes, likely will have more than a few “buckets o’ wine”, and we may need a Tom Selleck look-alike contest! Robert followed up with a discussion of our Club’s “Antique Road Show” with Alice Karle, Fine Arts Appraiser who will be arriving on Tuesday February 11, 2014 in time for lunch. With help from Mark “Fast Talking” Magid at the auction gavel, we raised $270 from Lynda and Kati for our Polio Plus effort while providing them with the opportunity to find out just what that armoire in the garage is worth. It looks like Phil Palmquist will be adding an item or two to the discussion so this is starting to look more and more like the road show. Thank you Phil for suggesting the speaker, thank you Mark for auctioning the options, and thank you Robert for great programs this year!

Our program today was by Ben Pitterle, Watershed Programs Director for Santa Barbara Channelkeeper. Ben deserves our applause as he had minimal notice that he was speaking (he stood in for Kira Redmond, executive director, with five minutes’ notice), minimal sleep (he has infant twins), and minimal knowledge of Rotary (are we some kind of secret organization?). That notwithstanding, Ben rolled through his presentation on why and when Channelkeeper started, who they are and who they represent, what their goals and programs are, and much on the positive impact to our water environment not only on shore with the rivers, creeks, streams, and ponds, but also out in the “Big Blue” of the Santa Barbara Channel and Pacific Ocean.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE CONTINUED...

Update on Joan Price

As any good Rotarian would do, Karen Hickman has checked in with Joan Price on her treatment and condition… and Joan responded with tentative good news.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for checking in. I just had my last chemo but they are keeping me on another drug for a year, so I still have to go in every three weeks for the infusion.

I am in remission right now, which is good. I am working on getting my strength back. I had chemo on Tuesdays so I didn't feel much like dropping in to Rotary.

In the next few weeks I hope to have enough energy to come by. Say hi to everyone for me.

Interesting discussion on where the territorial boundaries are (and where ships can dump their waste), how much water gets processed on offshore oil rigs and who monitors, the impact of increased cruise ship traffic in our harbor, and the global perspective of the WaterKeeper Alliance (an organization formed in 1966 on the Hudson River to help protect local fisheries). It is noted that Santa Barbara ChannelKeepers has received grants from Rotary Club of Montecito Foundation and this presentation provided great “feedback” on our grant dollars at work!

Next week's program is on “Chasing Evil… the road to a murder conviction” with Ron Bamieh. Del has his work “cut out” for him to find an appropriate song… and Kurt is chomping at the bit to exchange some legal bits with Ron.

What is Cockney?The  term  Cockney  has  geographical,  social,  and  linguistic  associations.  Traditionally,  it  refers  to  people  born  within  a  certain  area  of  London,  which  is covered  by  "the  sound  of  Bow  bells".  It  is  often  used  to  refer  to  working‐class  Londoners  in  the  East  End.  Linguistically,  it  can  refer  to  the  accent  and  form  of English spoken by this group. 

A costume associated with Cockneys  is  that of  the pearly King  (or  pearly  Queen)  worn  by  London  costermongers  who sew thousands of pearl buttons onto their clothing in elaborate and creative patterns. 

Committee News: We are in process of updating the Paul Harris Fellow program awards credit for each Rotarian in the Club; please extend a hearty thank you to Joe Kirkland and Marc Fleischman for taking this on. In addition to sorting out what qualifies for PHF credit at TRF (The Rotary Foundation) we will be clarifying what each item on your quarterly invoice is and where your dollars go!

Projects are planned with DG Jack’s attendance at the D4160 District Conference. Last year, about 20 of us accompanied the DG, bringing successful projects to distribute solar lights, fabricate reading glasses and work on a school. Homestays are being arranged. We often talk about Rotary as an extended family, with all of its branches and generations. We value our youth program participants and alumni as important members of the Rotary family, and we place a special emphasis on service to children and families. We do this because we know that for any family, the youngest generation is the future. That is absolutely true for us in Rotary.

We know that it is essential for us to bring in a new generation of younger Rotary members. We've spent a lot of time talking about how to attract young professionals to Rotary – but perhaps we haven't talked enough about why they don't stay.

There are plenty of young people, some of them youth program alumni, who do join Rotary. But when they begin families of their own, many of them leave. It

isn't hard to see why: These are young professionals who are already spending more time than they want to away from their families. No matter how much they love and value Rotary, they are not going to prioritize their Rotary service over their spouses and children.

Nor should we ever expect them to. This is why it is so important for us to find ways to welcome families into Rotary, so that Rotary and the family are never in competition for a Rotarian's time. Whether it's by planning service projects that involve the whole family, or providing child care during meetings, or being flexible about meeting places and times, we need to make Rotary service a viable option for those with young children.

When you welcome families into Rotary, you're saying: Your family is not an obstacle to your Rotary service. They're not something that has to be scheduled around. Instead of mom or dad going out to Rotary and leaving everyone else at home, Rotary goes on the family calendar. The family of Rotary is real. Those children are going to grow up seeing their parents involved in community service, and being involved in service themselves. Not only is that a great thing for the family – it's a great thing for the Rotary club, which will be helping to nurture a new generation of active, service-minded young members.

At every stage of our lives and our careers, Rotary has something for all of us – a way to let us do more, give more, and be more. Rotary is big enough for us all.
