Program Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to: Anticipate and correct problems related to P450 drug interactions Treat children and adolescents with bipolar mania Better understand the clinical relevance of the neuroprotective effects of lithium Be more discriminating about when to prescribe antidepressants Select optimal medications for psychiatric disorders in women of child-bearing potential Select optimal medications for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder Massachusetts Psychiatric Society’s 28th Annual Psychopharmacology Update Program Overview The MPS is pleased to present our 28th Annual Psychopharmacology Update. This year’s conference will once again feature lectures focused on evidence-informed practice. David Osser will open the program with a review and workshop on Cytochrome P450 drug interactions, followed by a trio of talks on topics related to bipolar disorders by C. Iraklis Giakoumatos, Othman Mohammad, and Nassir Ghaemi. Dr. Mohammad’s presentation will be of special interest to child and adolescent psychiatrists. Following lunch, there will be a presentation on problems with how to interpret and apply the antidepressant literature in clinical practice, by Mark Zimmerman from Brown University. Dr. Zimmerman’s out-of-the-box thinking has challenged attendees to MPS Update meetings in the past, and we are very pleased he is able to be with us again this year. Next, a presentation on medications for women of child-bearing potential and in pregnancy by Fe Festin will take place. Lastly, the program will conclude with Harvard South Shore residents Ashley Beaulieu and Edward Tabasky discussing a new psycho- pharmacology algorithm for managing obsessive compulsive disorder, the latest from that department’s series of algorithm projects.
