WELCOME & HOUSEKEEPING BY STEVE AUSTIN (M.C.)OFFICIAL WELCOME BY PIAA C.E.O. JOANNE SILLINCE

9.00am – 10.30am SHANNON HEGGEM - CMG & Certifier/ NCMG / CKOGETTING A NEW LEASH ON LIFE

Overcoming defeat to find true happiness. We all face adversity; how do we succeed beyond our own experiences? In 1998, Shannon was viciously attacked in the throat by a dog, and amazingly, survived. Since then, she has overcome incredible obstacles to continue her life’s journey. The experience was a major turning point for her. In this life changing opening session, she shares her motivation and spirit of

enthusiasm that helped her translate this trauma into triumph!

10.30am – 11.00am morning tea & trade show

11.00am – 12.30pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS

DENYS LORRAINGROOM DEMO - Carding & Stripping a TerrierCarding is a profitable add-on service you can offer your customers. Any shedding breed will shed less

after carding and the coat will look shiny & healthy. In this session you will learn not to throw away worn out clipper blades and reap the benefits for you and

the customer in learning new skills!

TERI DI MARINOWorking as a team in the salon

From the opening time to closing and every minute in between, the entire salon should function as a

team. An employee is an extension of the business owner and good management assure that everybody is on the same wavelength. When an employee (or

owner) is not acting with the good of the entire salon in mind, it can wreak havoc in a day’s routine. Knowing that everybody is working together is very evident and reassures the customer that the salon is responsible and caring. Teri will touch base on

everything from first impressions and appearances to checking the pet in and out efficiently. This is a good seminar to learn to incorporate the bathing staff into

the daily routine of the salon.

GAVIN BIGGSBureaucracy Gone Mad!

Gavin presented at the 2007 AusBoard conference and the content of his session, being totally relevant

to the problems boarders experience with red tape no matter which Australian state you are in, was a huge hit and very interesting for those in attendance. Carrying on from last year Gavin is

conversant with the challenges facing Development Applications and the processes necessary to help

achieve positive outcomes. He draws on his unique work experience to produce facilities that incorporate

his clients marketing strategies, their specific site issues, weather patterns and staff productivity. His distinctive background enables him to understand

the need for designs to be practical and to integrate industry specific issues such as air flow, animal

exercise and acoustic control with efficient layout for staffing and operational efficiency with best practice management. An efficiently designed facility impacts positively on operational efficiencies and profitability.

12.30pm – 1.30pm lunch & trade show

1.30pm – 3.00pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS

DENYS LORRAINGROOM DEMO

How do you use Thinning Scissors and Blending Scissors properly? And when do

you use them?

TERI DI MARINODealing with “difficult human clients”

That “certain” client’s car pulls into the parking lot and you head for the back room, hoping someone

else will deal with them. Then you realize that this is a one-person business & you own it! You have to deal

with “that person” again! You’ve tried to explain salon policy & protocol, but they just don’t get it.

Who is harder to handle – the dog or the owner? Teri brings “client training 101” to the forefront in this seminar that is peppered with hints (and humour) on making it work while preserving your dignity as

well as sanity. This class is a good primer to help avoid client-induced burnout.

ROSIE OVERFIELDPET INDUSTRY CONSULTANT

The Right Person in the Right Role – Recruiting for Keeps

How will I know if this is the right person for the job? How will I know if this is the career for them? Will I

see the ‘real’ person I am interviewing, and if they are what I want, how do I keep them?

Effective recruitment requires careful planning and as much preparation by the employer and the

potential employee! This seminar will highlight how to effectively attract the right person for the position

on offer, conduct meaningful interviews with clear required outcomes, integrate new staff members successfully into the company culture and deliver effective induction and career pathing programs.

3.00pm – 3.30pm afternoon tea & trade show

3.30pm – 5.00pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS

DENYS LORRAIN TECHNIQUES FOR DIFFICULT DOGS

Calming ways & solutions for both you and the animal!

TERI DI MARINOWhat’s in those bubbles?

(Shampoos, Conditioners & Sprays)Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride. These are very frightening words that actually can do us all some good. Teri takes a groomers eye view at

the stuff we use every day in a language we can all understand. Do we really know what’s in the stuff

we use? Do we know how and why they work? Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are the most

expendable items salons work with and the more we know about the contents of these products, the better we will be at selecting a product that’s right

for our situation. (By the way...our scary words above are “techno-speak” for Vitamin E, Vitamin D and

simple table salt, often found in grooming products)

GEOFF GOLOVSKY BVScTHE BOARDING ANIMAL

Canine Cough & vaccinations –Are they 100% effective??

Anxiety associated issues and how best to reduce anxiety in animals away from home PLUS first aid for cats & dogs. Also the diabetic animal, low fat

diets, spot signs of illness before it is too late, older pets & sanitation.

WedneSdAY 30th JulY8.30am REGISTRATION & TRADE SHOW

9.00am – 12.30pm SHANNON HEGGEM CKO, CMG & Certifier, NCMG ARE YOU MAXIMISING YOUR PET CARE FACILITY ‘S EARNING POTENTIAL???

Making Your Facility Work For You- Two years ago, Shannon decided that she needed to make some changes with her kennel business; she was tired of staffing issues, payroll, and the like. So, she turned her business upside down, and changed it to work FOR HER. So she now operates a high-end luxury kennel, as a hobby only. And this

kennel isn’t like anything you’ve ever heard of! Shannon runs this highly-profitable kennel without any employees, no scheduled office hours (it is all self-service), and even no exit baths! In this life-changing seminar, Shannon will share her unique and effective strategies that she utilized to turn her once out-of-control big kennel into an

even more profitable smaller kennel, with fewer dogs, less advertising, fewer headaches, and more income! Don’t miss it!Common Marketing Mistakes, Misbeliefs, and Misadventures- What is marketing and why is it important? Effective and fun marketing strategies that work! Shannon

will teach you how to create compelling informational tools that will not only attract new pet owners but also educate and inform existing clients. She will show you tips on how to accentuate your facility’s uniqueness and specialized services. She will share strategies that will help you to evaluate and fine-tune your existing marketing

materials and brand image for maximum effectiveness. And, learn how to master the language of marketing: exit bath vs. soothing hydrotherapy treatment... She will even share her secrets on how to maximize unconventional opportunities to market your pet care facility, as well!

Why a Boarding Kennel Must Have A Great Website- An attractive, well-planned website can boost facility earnings in many ways. In this seminar, Shannon will present vital and essential web information, such as: Hiring the perfect employee by contacting a competent web designer, turning your website into an informative marketing

tool for potential clients, motivating your clients to make repeated visits to your website, etc.

9.00am – 10.30am CONCURRENT SESSIONS

DENYS LORRAINON THE POODLE –EUROPEAN STYLE!

Denys, being born and raised in France should know the French Poodle... and he does. In Europe, this breed is much advanced in styling. Here, the trim

has evolved slowly. European styling is much more angled and elegant. But technique is technique, regardless of the clip. You will not want to miss

Denys as he grooms a Poodle.... in European style. Learn from one of the best. See how he sets the lines and achieves a beautiful scissor finish. And learn a new way to groom Poodles with flair!

TERI DI MARINOBather/Brusher Part 1

Tools of the trade & how to use themHow do you choose the right tool for the right job? From brushes and nail clippers to muzzles and

grooming loops, Teri covers the equipment basics in the first of the day’s bather/brusher series. Products and equipment necessary for our job will be highlighted and their correct uses studied, all in an effort to make our work easier, help the pet be more comfortable and help make the finished groom the true work of art

it is. Safe handling and humane restraint is emphasized.

ASK DENNIS!!An open forum dedicated to grooming tips, techniques - in fact anything you want to

know and hear from an international expert!!

TERI DI MARINOBather/Brusher Part 2

Dematting...It’s not what it used to be.Everyone has his or her own technique for dematting the neglected pet. For some, it is shaving the dog down and then entering the pelt in a mat contest! For others, it’s the time consuming, “hair-splitting”

experience that is destined to take its toll on the pet, the groomer or, most often, both. Teri will examine the most common and effective products, tools and techniques for dealing with the demat dilemma without

getting all tangled up in a tight spot.

12.30pm – 1.30pm lunch & trade show

1.30pm - 3.00pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS

GEOFF GOLOVSKY BVScFIRST AID FOR GROOMERS –

Back by popular demand!Following on from the hugely popular & successful

first aid session at AusGroom in 2007 Geoff will today present topics that he didn’t get to cover last year such

as epileptic fits, clipper rash, hot spots, panic attacks toxicity, herbal remedies – do they work? The ear - to

pluck or not to pluck, stress. What about cats???

Bather/Brusher part 3Getting the most out of your bathing and

drying time.Bathing and properly drying a pet is one of the

most underestimated aspects of our jobs. More than simply wetting and rinsing, proper bathing and

drying techniques can make or break a groom. So far in today’s bather/brusher course, we’ve evaluated

and prepared the pet’s skin & coat and selected a shampoo regime to correct or complement it. Now,

our ability to properly apply these products and thoroughly clean and dry the pet will have a direct influence on the finished groom. We will focus on time and water saving techniques it this section.

DENYS LORRAINOVERSEAS GROOM TRENDS

What happening overseas? What are the latest styles and new fashion add ons?

TERI DI MARINOCamouflage grooming – Hiding faults in “less than perfect” pets

As much as we all love our dogs, we must realize there are no perfect pets. Understanding correct canine structure and the beast beneath the hair will increase our ability to deal with certain difficulties we may

encounter in our grooming.Teri will show how to achieve the edge that makes your grooming just a bit better than the salon down the street. Knowing proper body construction of the dog helps make the grooming job easier and the finished groom look better. Make crooked legs appear straight, long bodies appear shorter and short necks appear

longer. Give the owner the “Show dog” appearance they’ve always wanted.

10.30am – 11.00am morning tea & trade show

11.00am – 12.30pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS

DENYS LORRAINCLIPPING & STRIPPING A VERY POPULAR

BREED

TERI DI MARINOGeriatrics and Paediatrics

The old and the young! Years may separate them, but they are similar in so many ways. Their owners are impatient and want them finished quickly. They all want to go home…NOW… and bark incessantly in an effort to tell you that. They refuse to stand still. They have “accidents” in your salon. You love them dearly but you have to muster up an extraordinary amount of patience to deal with them. The big difference is that one is willing and able to learn to become a well-behaved customer. The other is in the twilight of his life but needs to be groomed in the meantime. Teri will discuss how we can deal with these pets and their owners as they go from the cradle to the crotchety. She will examine handling techniques to help puppies learn that grooming can be fun while training

their new owners. Then she will examine the anxiety often associated with the older pet and help you recognize and deal with health related problems and the owner’s denial of their pets’ age and condition.

12.30pm – 1.30pm lunch & trade show

1.30pm – 3.00pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS

DENYS LORRAIN SNAP ONS ARE TIME SAVERSDo you fumble around with your snap on combs? Are the results you get less than satisfying? Do they fall off your clipper, leaving a big bald spot? Denys will show you how to save time on hand scissoring! These are

easy tools that you can’t afford to be without!

TERI DI MARINOMarketing your grooming business

Do you have the tools to help make your business a success? Have you often wondered why your

advertising efforts appear to be falling on deaf ears or blind eyes? How do you attract the clientele you want?

Teri will go into detail on how you can get the most out of your marketing budget by covering how to best present yourself and your business from business cards

and brochures to defining your target market

Netherlands, England and especially America. He has participated many times in Intergroom where he had many gold medals and also won the International Groomer of the Year and Oster Invitational Tournament Of Champions in 1997. Shannon heggem Most 9 year old little girls with dolls or worry about boy germs. But not Shannon Heggem. She was too busy operating a dog grooming business that she had started on her own in her parents’ backyard. Even at age nine Shannon recognized the power of marketing when she ordered a rubber address stamp and “stamped” out her first business cards. But this was just the beginning for this born entrepreneur. Shannon has always been a business visionary. After university at age 23, Shannon returned to her rural Montana hometown where she opened a hugely successful luxury pet resort and spa. Recognizing the growth potential for high-end pet services, Shannon then established a consulting practice to help other pet care providers design and market this brand-new niche concept throughout North America.

Always focused on her own education, Shannon earned the title of first Certified Master Groomer in the state of Montana in 2000. Then, upon completing another three year testing process, she was awarded the honoured title of ABKA’s Certified Kennel Operator. Shannon is one of only four people world-wide to hold both of these pet industry titles! She is also a National Certified Master Groomer through NDGAA, and is a certifier for International Professional Groomers, Inc.

A Turning Point At age 29, Shannon didn’t allow a nearly–fatal Rottweiler attack to slow down her momentum. Determined to overcome the misfortune, Shannon used her extensive recuperation time to brainstorm her next business move. She focused her efforts on expanding her consulting services by developing an international pet career vocational school, the Fast Track Institute of Pet Careers.

Despite her traumatic ordeal, Shannon decided to share her story of survival as well as her marketing expertise with the mainstream. As an international speaker and consultant, she is dedicated to motivating others to succeed beyond their own experiences, both professionally and personally. Shannon is able to offer her expertise and spirit of survivorship with humour and realism, leaving her audiences refreshed, informed, and always inspired!

debra templar One of Australia’s leading retailing experts, Debra Templar just hates bad customer service and stupid business practices. So… she’s on a mission to change them.

She doesn’t just want to improve how we do business for the customer’s sake but also that we, as business owners, sell more stuff, make lots more profit, and love our businesses back to life!

Debra’s tools for change are business seminars, training sessions, keynote presentations and books. Her technique is to challenge, tease, cajole – in fact force - us to look at how we do business by asking us to jump the counter and view our systems, our processes, our policies and our beliefs from our customers’ point of view. She then applies her considerable skills and experience to show us ways to be better at what we do (often better than we thought we could be…).

Gavin biggs Gavin has worked within the pet care industry from an early age (with his family who have owned Hanrob for over 25 years) and has developed a strong knowledge of the specialised needs of Boarding Kennels and Animal Care Facilities. Since leaving school, Gavin has worked within the construction industry for over 17 years, generating an extensive project management portfolio managing small to large scale projects both in Sydney and Brisbane. In his last role Gavin worked for a large International Company in the position of QLD State Manager. Gavin has a Masters Degree in Business and Technology from the University of NSW. This unique working history enables Gavin to specialise in the design and construction of pet care facilities across the Asia Pacific region.

Geoff Golovsky has been a vet for 9 years and have worked in Mixed Animal Practice on the South Coast of New South Wales and in Thailand (in conjunction with AUSAID). For the last 6 years I have been exclusively a Small Animal Veterinarian in Sydney and London. I have recently gained my Memberships to the Small Animal Surgery Chapter of the Australian College of Veterinary Surgeons and I am currently studying for further post graduate surgery qualifications in the UK (via correspondence). I also do some teaching of vet students at Sydney University. Geoff also presented a first aid session at AusGroom in 2007 and was a huge hit with the delegates. Geoff is back by popular demand!!
