HOLY GHOST

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK —DECEMBER 17, 2017
Rectory Open House Last Week: Thank you to those who
came. I’m happy to share my love for Christmas and
decorating. More people also had the opportunity to view the
magnificent new olive-wood Nativity set that will soon be
displayed in our magnificent church at St. Stanislaus. We
picked up a few more donations as well. Thank you. This is
very helpful as we still owe about $5,000. (Remember: the
money we send is helping support 41 Christian families in
Bethlehem. Your donation also is recorded on your Church
giving.) A special “thank you” to Kathy Pederson and Jean
Rath from St. Mary’s, who, in this season of giving, were not
too busy to volunteer to assist in preparing and serving
refreshments for the open house and cleaning up after. God
bless you.
Centennial Ornaments at Holy Ghost: Get them while they
are still available. They make great Christmas gifts. Thank
you also to Deacon Tom Schulte and the Centennial Committee
for all the time invested so far to make this a memorable
observance.
Advent Confessions at St. Stan’s & Holy Ghost: Remember
there will be three priests available at St. Stanislaus this
afternoon, Sunday, December 17, at 1pm to hear confessions.
If the lines dwindle I will remain until 2 pm in the reconciliation
room. I am also available in the reconciliation room at St.
Stan’s before daily Masses on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays or by appointment. I will schedule extra times for
confessions at St. Stan’s include: Thurs., Dec. 21, 5 – 6 p.m.;
Fri., Dec. 22 and Sat., Dec. 23, 11 a.m. until noon (unless there
is a funeral either day). Only the front door of the church will
be unlocked during those extra times.
Christmas Masses: Since Christmas falls on a Monday this
year please read this carefully and plan accordingly.
The Masses for the 4
th
Sunday of Advent, Sun., Dec. 24 are
at the usual weekend times in both parishes.
The anticipated Masses for Christmas are on Sunday at 4
p.m. at Holy Ghost and 5 p.m. at St. Stan’s. There will be
Midnight Mass at St. Stan’s and at 10 a.m. Christmas
morning.
At Holy Ghost the Masses are at the usual time, 7:30 & 10
a.m. ATTENDING MASS AT 4 P.M. OR 5 P.M. ON SUNDAY
AFTERNOON ONLY SATISFY THE OBLIGATION FOR
CHRISTMAS. There are no “two-fers” (that means you
cannot fulfill TWO obligations by attending ONE Mass).
Attendance is required for BOTH the 4
th
Sunday of Advent
AND Christmas.
Reconciliation FAQs
1. Why do I have to confess my sins to a priest?
That’s the way Jesus set it up on Easter Sunday evening. He
told his apostles that just as God the Father had sent him —
and God the Father sent him to save us from our sins — so he
was sending them.
He breathed on them the power of the Holy Spirit, giving
them God’s power to forgive sins, since no one can forgive
sins but God alone. He told them that whatever sins they
forgive are forgiven and whatever sins they retain are
retained (Jn 20:21-23; Mk 2:7). Since the apostles were
unable to read minds, the only way that they would know
which to forgive and which to retain is if people told them
their sins. Jesus thus established the essential structure of the
sacrament of confession. Just as he uses priests to give us his
Body and Blood at Mass so he uses them to give us His mercy
in Penance.
2. Why do people vary in calling it the Sacrament of
Penance, Confession or Reconciliation?
The names emphasize different aspects of the sacrament.
· Penance refers to our repentance, sorrow and
resolution to amend our life with God’s help.
· Confession refers to the act by which we tell our sins
to the priest.
Reconciliation refers to the goal of the celebration by
which the sinner is reconciled to God and the Church
(see CCC 1423-1424).
The ritual for the sacrament is called the Rite of Penance, but
is fitting to refer to it with any of these titles. In fact, the
Catechism refers to it also as “the Sacrament of Conversion”
and the “Sacrament of Forgiveness.”

COMMUNITY NEWS / REFLECTION
The Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Omaha
invites those who have experienced the death of a loved one
to join us Wednesday, December 20th at 6:00PM in Holy
Angels Mausoleum at resurrection Cemetery. We will pray for
your peace and healing as we prepare for the coming of the
Christ Child.
Come leave your prayer petitions on the Christmas tree of
remembrance and hope. Your petitions will be offered in
prayer all of Advent and presented silently at the January 8th
Memorial Mass in Holy angels Mausoleum. After this Mass
these petitions will be buried on the cemetery grounds.
For further information please contact Deacon Jim tardy at
402-391-3711 or by email at [email protected].
Word of Life: “He is always with us. Jesus promised this when
he gave the disciples the same mission he gives to each of us:
Go. … Walk with each other. Do not be afraid to embrace
God’s gift of life. Whatever storms or trials we face, we are
not alone. He is with us.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life
Activities 2017-18 Respect Life Reflection,

A special choir practice will be held to prepare for the 5pm
Christmas Mass and for the Midnight Mass. This practice will
be held on Monday December 18 at 6:30pm in the choir loft.
Please enter through the north doors. We will sing traditional
Polish carols, in Polish (with phonetic pronunciation) with English
translations. In the Polish tradition, Midnight Mass is called the
“Mass of the Shepherds”, as the shepherds were the first to
hear the angels and see the baby Jesus. All singers are
welcome to this practice, and to sing with the choir at these
Christmas Masses.

Volunteer needed to Help Feed the Poor
The Holy Family Food Re-Distribution Program is in need of a
volunteer to drive one of our cargo vans and collect donated
food from area grocery stores. We need assistance on either
Monday or Thursday mornings. Please contact Deacon Al
Aulner at 402-669-1714 for details. This is a great way to
assist the poor in our community.
This is the last week to order Scrip to have in time for
Christmas. Flyers can be found on the table in the back
of church. Scrip is a great way to get some of those
gifts you need and help out Holy Ghost at the same time. Any
questions please contact the rectory.

HOLY GHOST NEWS (PG. 2)
ADVENT ANGELS ARE DUE THIS
WEEKEND. (WE WILL BE SORTING THEM
AFTER 10 MASS). THANK YOU FOR
YOUR STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE AND
YOUR GIFT OF CHRIST’S LOVE.
We would like to clarify about the Pre-
Ordering and Pre-Paying for the Cinnamon
Rolls. You DO NOT need to pre-order to
purchase the cinnamon rolls, we are
offering this option to those who would like
to order a large number of our rolls. If we
know you would like 6 or 12 or 18 rolls
we can have them ready for you to just
pick up after your specified Sunday Mass. If
you normally attend Saturday evening
Mass, you could order and pick up the rolls
the next day as we will continue to bake,
frost and sell individual rolls starting on
January 21, 2018.
If you would like to order 6 or more
rolls TO GO, we would like you to pre-
order and pre-pay for these. We would
have them ready for you to pick up after
the Mass you specify, thus no waiting in
line. They freeze well frosted or unfrosted.
We will be baking the rolls, frosting,
and selling them after the 7:30am and
10am Masses on our regularly scheduled
Cinnamon Roll Sundays of Jan. 21, Feb.
18, Mar. 18, and April 15, 2018.
Check out the order form flyer in the
bulletin or pick up an extra form in the
holder in the back of church. Any
questions, please feel free to contact the
Cinnamon Roll Sunday Crew or by calling
Marita at 402-677-2310 (please leave a
message if she doesn't answer.)
On the tables in the back of church you
will find many prayer cards, educational
items, and religious literature. All items
back there are free for anyone to take.
Please stop back and take a look!
Let us also remember in our prayers those who in care centers, homebound or need healing:
The following members of our Parish, or loved ones of our Parishioners are now or recently have been in the hospital. May our Lord grant them a speedy
recovery and return them to their families in perfect health:
Please also pray for our loved ones who are currently serving our Country:
