LEAVING FOR THE HOLIDAYS? If you are planning on leaving the area to visit friends and family during the holiday, pleasestopbyourofficeandfilloutanextended absence form. This will let Lincoln know where you will be and your care takers information in case of an emergency. You never know what could happen while you are away. Give yourself the peace of mind knowing your home will be cared for.
HOLIDAY DECORATIONS It is always fun to get into the spirit of the season by setting up festive decorations! Please keep in mind the safety rules for all base housing to ensure an enjoyable season for everyone: Make sure all lights hung outside the home are weather proof. Be sure to not overload outlets with too many plugs and extension cords. Be sure to always use surge protectors. Please review the guidelines in your combat center orders. Decorationsareonlyallowedtobeonfrom1800-2200Ensure candles are not left unattended or that your tree is not placed near any sources of heat. Please keep in mind when placing your decorations that it is against Combat Center Orders to climb on your rooftops.
TRASH AND RECYCLING Waste management and recycling are extremely important in housing to avoid pests and sanitation issues. To receive the best trash service possible, please be sure to follow the base guidelines.
All trash and recycle bins must be put out on the curb no later than 0600 on your designated trash day and must be returned to its designated area no later than
1800 that same day. Recycle bins must contain recyclable items only. Waste management will not empty your recycle bin if solid waste has been added. The trash in your bin must be bagged. If not, your bin will be skipped creating an unsanitary and unsightly mess for your community, especially with the desert wind storms we often experience. If you have just moved in and have boxes, please flatten and place them in between your recycle and trash bins. This will ensure they get picked up on your trash day. Excess trash may not be placed in the boxes for pickup. Any excess trash or bulk items must be secured and placed next to your trash bin on your designated trash day to be picked up. If possible, please bag the larger items.
• In the winter, set your thermostat at 60 degrees Fahrenheit when you are sleeping or away. Set the thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit when you are at home. This will save 10 percent or more on your heating bills every winter.
• The sun’s energy can have a noticeable effect on the temperature in your home, especially from windows facing south and west. Keep window shades and drapes open during winter months to let in the sun’s radiant heat.
• Don’t depend on thermostat settings; go by your own comfort. Keep the temperature where you are comfortable wearing a light sweater.
• When the house is cold, don’t “overset” the thermostat for temperature recovery. The house won’t heat any faster.
• Use ceiling fans to circulate warm air - reversible ceiling fans are best, as they can circulate warm air without passing a breeze over your skin.
• Lowering the thermostat by just one degree Fahrenheit can reduce energy use by 3 percent.
• If you are going out of town for the holidays, please unplug your decorative lights and unplug any appliances you are not using. TVs and clocks are really the only things that need to remain plugged in.

• Use real dishes and flatware, instead of serving food on paper or Styrofoam at holiday parties. If there aren’t enough to go around, use recycled paper products, or use plastic plates and cups, which can be washed and used over and over again. Cheap cloth napkins are also a great alternative and a bit fancier. Choose darker colors when buying for staining. This can become a year round ritual saving you green and living green.
• Send an e-card with a photo of your family and a holiday wish, or an e-vite if you are hosting a party, instead of wasting paper (and stamps!) on traditional greeting cards.
• Reduce wrapping by making it part of the present. Put gifts in a basket, terra cotta garden pot, or woven bag. Use ribbon to tie a bow on larger presents.
• Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, Americans throw away a million EXTRA tons [900,000 metric tons] of garbage each week, including holiday wrapping and packaging.
• If every family reused just 2 feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet.
• According to one U.S. Department of Energy study, if everyone replaced their conventional holiday light strings with LEDs, at least two billion kilowatt-hours of electricity could be saved in a month. The savings would be enough to power 200,000 homes for a year.
