Cremation: New Vatican issued Norms. On Tuesday, October 25th the Congregation For The Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) the Vatican official teaching office with the approval of Pope Francis and published by his orders, issued its instruction on cremation, Ad resurgendum cum Christo (“To Rise With Christ”). While much in the document restates official church teaching regarding the choice of cremation, it does explicitly address some common practices with specific directives. Below are the directives. As always, you are free to visit with me for further explanation.

1. “The conservation (reservation) of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence (taking them home) is not permitted. 2. “The ashes may not be divided among various family members.” (The practice of dividing all or part of the cremains into small

containers for distribution to family members.) 3. “It is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way.” 4. (The ashes of the departed also) “may not be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects. 5. “The ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases in a church or area, which

has been set aside for this purpose, and so dedicated by the competent ecclesial authority” (a columbarium would be an example of an acceptable place of burial.)

“From earliest times, Christians have desired that the faithful departed become the objects of the Christian community’s prayers and re-membrance. Their tombs have become places of prayer, remembrance and reflection. The faithful departed remain part of the Church who believes ‘in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified (doctrine of Purgatory) and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church.”

In today’s second reading, Saint Paul offers encouragement to the Christian community and prays that the Lord instill encourage-ment in their hearts. There is nothing worse than discouragement to drain people spiritually and emotionally. Yet, at times, it is much easier to lose patience with others and offer critical and discouraging words. We are “our brothers’ (and sisters’) keepers.” We are stewards of our relationships with others. Offering encour-agement is essential to the exercise of that stewardship. Saint Paul understood that God worked through him just as God works through us to encourage others. How often do we ask the Lord for encouragement? How often do we look for opportunities to affirm, strengthen and encourage others in our daily lives?

STUDENT TUITION ORGANIZATION What’s this STO all about? It’s about supporting Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Dubuque and making the most out of your charitable contribution. If you file an Iowa Income Tax Return, your contributions to the Our Faith School Tuition Organiza-tion (STO) qualify for a 65% tax credit. That means for every $100 you donate, you receive an Iowa income tax credit of $65, which reduces your Iowa tax liability by $65. Thus, a $1000 contribution reduces your Iowa tax liability by a whopping $650 AND the entire amount of your gift qualifies for federal deductibility. Visit www.ourfaithsto.org, or call the Archdiocese of Dubuque at 800-876-3546 ext.219 or 307 to learn more.

IRA Charitable Rollover Now Permanent: Congress and President Obama have reauthorized and made permanent the IRA charitable rollover. Anyone 70 1/2 or older can make a charitable gift up to $100,000 directly from his/her IRA to any approved nonprofit organization including all Archdiocesan parishes, schools, Our Faith STO, Catholic Charities, The Catho-lic Foundation or any other archdiocesan ministry. The gift will qualify for the donor’s required minimum distribution and he/she will not have to pay federal income tax on the amount given directly from his/her IRA to charity. For more information, contact your IRA administrator or tax advisor.

STEPHEN MINISTRY Balance: Stability produced by even distribution of weight or forces. Our lives are delicately balanced. A small shift in one area of life can set us off balance. A major change can send us spinning out of control. Stephen Ministers can help when life gets out of balance. They listen and care and, most importantly, bring the stability of Jesus' love and grace into people's lives. If your life or that of someone you know has shifted out of balance, consider Stephen Ministry. Call Anne Schmitt (515-291-8257) or Deacon Alan Christy (515-231-8099).
