Mischievous Loki, Sif and her Golden Hair

When reading the story get the girls to say and do the following actions. Have a run through of them before so they know, you can even split into groups and have each group say one thing so itʼs less for them to remember.

Thor - Loud angry noises like thunder, e.g shout and stomp feet Hair - “Swish swish” and shake hair slowly from side to side to show it off. Loki - Giggle and mischievously tap fingers together (making triangle shape)Odin - “Father of all” in deep voiceDwarfs - “Clink clinkʼ Make actions as though forging/hitting metalGold - “Wow” whispered and wiggling fingers in an arch shape.

There are many Viking Gods and Goddesses and I shall tell you a story about some them but before I begin I shall introduce them to you. First we have Thor, the God of war! He was a loud and angry God, with his hammer to command the thunder. Now, despite Thorʼs anger and thirst for war he had a soft side, a lovey-dovey side when it came to his wife Sif. She was the goddess of the Harvest and she was very beautiful with long, flowing, golden hair. Another God in this story is Loki, known as the trickster God. He was so full of trickery he tricked his way into becoming a God! FInally last but not least we have Odin. The main God, who knows everything that goes on thanks to his 2 crows who report back to him everyday. They all live in Asgard, the land of the Gods and now that you know who they are I shall begin a story that started on what seemed like any other day...

Now, as you know Sifʼs hair was long, her hair almost reached the ground. It took a lot of looking after, it was thick and flowed all around her. She had washed her hair and combed her hair, Sif never had a bad hair day. She lay down on the grass her hair shining brightly in the sun as she waited for it to dry and waited for Thor to come home. Suddenly she began to feel sleepy, her eyes started closing, she couldnʼt stay awake any longer and she fell into a deep sleep.

Loki watched... Loki waited... Loki had a mischievous plan! He knew how much Thor loved that golden hair, and how proud Sif was of it, he smiled a wicked smile. This was his chance to cause havoc and take something from Thor, not just anything, but Thorʼs greatest treasure. He creeped slowly up to Sif who was still sleeping, took out his scissors and began to chop, snip and cut at Sifʼs beautiful golden hair. When he had finished Sifʼs head was bare, there was not one tiny single hair!

After a while Sif awoke from her slumber. She felt cold but the sun was still shining, she lifted her head.. it felt very light. She panicked. She reached up to feel her hair, but yes, thatʼs right, there was nothing there!! She ran inside and checked to see if it was really true, when she saw she sobbed and sobbed, making it rain in the corn fields and the other Gods wondering what was happening with Sif.

Thor had been away from Asgard, he was looking forward to seeing Sif, but when he got home she was not there. He called her, no answer, he went in search of her she couldnʼt be far. Still he could not find her, he decided to go back home and wait, that was when he heard his name Thor, whispered. Sif sobbed from the shadows, ʻHusband do not look at me, I have to leave Asgard, leave the Gods and Goddesses and go to live with the Dwarfs, I am as ugly as them now”.

Thor was confused. He asked “What has happened, what has changed so much?” Sif sobbed in despair and said, “I have lost every single hair on my head, the beautiful golden hair, that you loved. Now it is gone you will not love me anymore and I do not want the dwellers of Asgard to look at me”. She stepped forward and removed her veil. Thor grew in anger. “Who did this to you?” he demanded, Sif sobbed and shook her hair-less head. His anger grew into a rage, the men of the earth felt it shake with thunder. He shouted “I am Thor, the strongest God in Asgard! I will make sure all the Gods use their powers they have and you will again have your golden hair!” With that he took Sif by the hand and they went to the house of the Gods and Goddesses.

Thor boomed through the door, a veiled Sif followed close behind. Although they could not see Sif had no hair, it was Thorʼs anger that made them know something was wrong. He began to tell them, explaining what had happened when slowly whispers started among the Gods, there was only one name on their lips...Loki.

Thor turned to Odin, “you see” he shouted. “None other than Loki would do such a shameful thing in Asgard. He is hiding, but I will find him and kill him!” ʻNo, you will not” commanded Odin “No dweller in Asgard will kill another. I shall summon him here, he has to answer and I will make him restore Sifʼs golden hair, you forget he is cunning and able to do many things”. WIth that Odinʼs call was heard throughout all of Asgard and Loki had no choice but to go to the the House of the Gods and Goddesses.

He entered and saw Thorʼs rage, he turned to Odin, whose face was stern, he said “There is something you have to do Loki, find a way to restore Sifʼs beautiful golden hair. “I canʼt grow hair! How can I do that on her bald head” Loki joked. No one laughed. “you have wronged Thor and Sif, you need to make it right, do not hide from your actions”. Odin said solemnly. Loki looked at Odin, then at Thor. He knew he had no choice, he would have to find a way to restore Sifʼs golden hair. “I shall go do as you have commanded” he said, and with that he left Asgard.

Now Loki had often caused trouble in Asgard and fell out with many of the Gods and Goddesses, but this time he had to find a solution. So Loki went under the earth. A place no mortal could go because it was right to the center of the earth where it is molten hot, and the place where the dwarfs dwelled, because he was God of fire he had no trouble visiting them, he had been there before and they were quite friendly to him, but this time however he would need to use all his trickery skills.

Down down down he went, until he came to the place where the Dwarfs were forging their metals. They were master smiths, and could make anything from the metals and minerals they found. Loki watched, Loki waited... He was taking note of the things they were making. One was a spear, the other a boat, Loki had an idea.

The dwarfs listened as he charmed them, the dwarfs basked in Lokiʼs praise. He promised them things only dwellers of Asgard could give, things dwarfs longed for. He tricked them into thinking one day they would come to own all of Asgard and they were dreamy of all his promises. Dwarfs were not very good at resisting flattery, praise and false promises and he knew this so it was then Loki asked “have you got a bar of gold you can hammer and turn into threads so fine they look like the hair of Sif, Thorʼs wife? Only you dwarfs are the only creatures who could have the skill to do such a thing, ahh here is some gold, hammer is into those fine threads and all the Gods will be jealous of your fine work”. The dwarfs were flattered, of course they could do such a thing, after all dwarfs are the most skilled forgers they thought, with that they got to work, hammering and beating the gold bar. They had beaten it into gold threads, but it was not enough. Sifʼs hair was fine, so fine they needed to work harder, so they continued to beat the gold threads until they were equally fine as Sifʼs. Loki held the gold threads of hair. “This is good he said, but I need it made into a cap” So the dwarfs worked more days and more nights, weaving stitching and sewing until they had the perfect gold hair. Loki held it up, it glimmered brightly in the sun, the gold threads flowed to the ground. The gold thread were so fine, the gold threads were so light. “This” said Loki “is perfect! You really are master forgers.” He made them more promises making the dreamy look in dwarfs eyes come back. He charmed them, asking “will you give me the spear and boat and the gold hair in exchange for the heavens and earth?” The dwarfs drunk on his promises willingly gave him all he asked for despite the earth already belonging to them and the heavens were not Lokiʼs to give to them.

After his trickery Loki returned to Asgard. He walked into the house of the Gods and Goddesses and all those who dwelled in Asgard were waiting and watching for his return. Odin gave Loki an even sterner look than before. Thorʼs eyes were full of rage. It did not phase him, instead Loki skipped up to Sif with smiles, “off with your veil Sif” he said with a wave of his hand. She started to sob as she stood there with no hair, in front of all of Asgard. Loki took the wonderful cap of gold hair and placed it on Sifʼs head. The gold hair fell down over her shoulders, the gold shining bright and soft and she smiled with joy as she ran her fingers through her new hair. All the Gods and Goddesses including Thor and Odin joined in Sifʼs joy, seeing her head was full of beautiful gold hair, looking just like it flowed from her roots, making her cheeks rosy and eyes glitter.

So there you have it, the story of the mischievous Loki, angry Thor, wise Odin and Sif who lost and regained her gold hair thanks to the hard work of gullible dwarfs.

Thors Marshmallow Hammer!Needed:Lollysticks, marshmallows, grey food colouring paste, icing sugar, silver edible ball decorations. or

Lollysticks, chocolate (to be melted), decorative chocolate curls and silver balls (optional)

Mix icing using Grey food colouring paste. Make sure the icing is mixed thick and not very runny otherwise it will run down off the marshmallow.

Take a marshmallow and a pop stick.

Dip the pop stick in the icing and push it into the marshmallow.

Dip the marshmallow into the icing and twirl it around coving all the sides and using a spoon to lift it onto the stick end.

Hold it up and twirl it slowly so any extra icing can just run off.

Next take the silver balls and do a pattern of your choice or dip the end on the top of the marshmallow.

Next pop them in the fridge to set.

Once set after 10/15 mins the are ready to be eaten

Alternatively

In the same process, use melted chocolate and chocolate curls (optional) to make a wooden hammer.

Make a Helmet with plaitsNo we know its agreed vikings didnʼt have horns on their helmets we think they look far more fun with them!

Cut ready long strips of crepe paper for the hair and 4 horns using the template.

Here we used a silver mixing bowl from IKEA cost £2 but plastic bowls and painting them or paper-mache would work also.

First plait the crepe paper and make 2 plaits.

Stick them onto the inside at the sides using regular tape.

Next work on the horns, fold them at the rectangle, bending it slightly, then using double sided tape stick the rectangle to the base of the bowl. Do one on each side.

Next on the already stuck down rectangle from one horn stick down another folded rectangle at the back so now there are 2 horns which can be glued at the tip to strengthen the horn.

Do the same with the opposite horn. So now the horns are held in place by each other supporting them.

No you have the horns and plaits in place you can decorate the helmet anyway you wish.

Now wear it and be a viking ready for battle!

Make Viking Helmet Cupcakes

1)First thing to make is the helmets themselves. Use either plain chocolate mini teacakes or mix the grey icing in Thors hammer and cover the top of the dome with grey icing to form the base of the helmet.

2)Next taking the sweet bananas cut them in half and squeeze them near the end and stick them onto each side of the helmet. If using icing then you might need to hold them a little bit so they stay in place and set.

3)Now leave them to set on the dome and turn to the cakes.

4)Either make them from scratch or using brought ones, ice the top with butter cream icing.

5)The take the made helmet and place it on top of the cake.

6)Now all you need to do is enjoy eating them!

Troll Hunt

Giants, Trolls, Wizards Game

Split the girls into two teams. The teams gather at opposite ends of the space and decide which creature they want to be for the first round: either Giants, Wizards or Trolls. The whole team must be the same creature. When both teams have decided, they line up, facing the other team, in the middle of the room. Everyone together yells "Giants! Wizards! Trolls!" and then whatever creature their team has decided to be. For example, a team who is Giants would yell: "Giants! Wizards! Trolls! GIANTS!"

Actions for the .creatures are as folllows:

Giants: Raise arms high overhead;

Wizards: Arms in front of body as if throwing a magic spell

Trolls: Hunch down curl arms inwards.

Important part: Giants step on Trolls (i.e. Giants beat Trolls), Trolls tickle Wizards, and Wizards zap Giants. In each round, whichever team "beats" the other team must chase the losers back towards their side of the room. (For example: If one team yells "Giants!" and the other yells "Trolls!", the Giants have won (remember Giants step on Trolls). So the Giants chase the Trolls back to their side of the room.) Anyone on the losing team to be tagged before they can touch their wall of the room now belongs to the other team. In rounds where both teams end up being the same creature, consider it a tie and start over. Play the game until most of the girls are on one team.

Trading cardsEach group is given a “trade” copy as many

times as needed or add your own

Making a CD fish decoration

1) Stick down cord in a loop to hang the fish up when finished.

2) Using double sides tape stick a strip across the bottom of one CD and stick strips of tissue paper or ribbon along the line.

3) Stick other pieces of double sided tape across the tissue and place other tape around the disc and stick them together so both sides are shiny.

4) Next using the shapes (if not pre cut for girls, now cut them all out ready) get the middle fin and fold one end in half and push through the hole in the CD so it sits in the middle and stick down with tape.

5) Next take the lips, fins and tails and stick them down 1 on each side matching them up at the edges.

6) Finally stick the eye down and decorate the rest of the CD with gems or pens.

7) Hang up either in the garden or inside where the sun can shine on it and make your fish sparkle!

Need: 2 CDʼs, Template sheet below, Craft Foam, scissors, cord for hanging, double sided tape, tissue paper/ribbon.
