Pitched cold roofs should crossventilate. The equivalent of a 10mmgap running continuously the fulllength of both eaves is usual. Onpitches above 35° where the spansexceed 10m consider also higher-level (equivalent 5mm) additionalventilation as defined in BS5250.

Single slope (monopitch) roofs maybe ventilated (equivalent 10mm) ateaves and (equivalent 5mm) atroof/wall intersection or thereabouts.Always ensure every ventilation routeis cross balanced - with entry andexit routes.

Where the insulation follows the roofslope observe the increased aperturerequirement at eaves and the needto maintain a free air space abovethe sloping ceiling. The ventilationlevel at the top of the roof is 5mm.

In cold roof situations where the roofpitch is below 15° cross ventilate using(equivalent 25mm) rated products. On spans exceeding 10m observeApproved Document F2 guideline byincreasing ventilation x 0.6% of roof(plan) area.

One-Way Aspirating Underlay may beused in cold and warm roofs to providethe requisite level of ventilation as analternative method of compliance.Ensure any need to cross-batten iscarried out if applicable. Productinstructions provide guidelines.

Suspended floors generally require aminimum of a 150mm void under andbalanced cross ventilation. Theequivalent of 1500mm2 airflow for eachmetre run of wall is usual or 500mm2

for every square metre of floor area –whichever is the greater. Pipes of notless than 100mm diameter may service airflow to voids formed bycompartment or sleeper walls. In suchcircumstances select the compatibleconnections to appropriate straight orcranked telescopic wall ventilatorsdetailed in this product guide.

Roof Space Ventilation

We welcome you to the range ofbuilding envelope ventilationproducts by Cavity Trays Ltd.

Ventilation to negate the effects ofcondensation in roofs, walls andfloors is necessary to comply withthe requirements of the BuildingRegulations and British Standards.Careful selection of products isalways recommended to optimiseventilation levels and performance.

Roof Wall or Floor is highlightedat the top of every product listing

indicating where the product maybe used.

At the bottom of every productentry are simple illustrationsproviding a general guide to thelevels of compliant ventilationunder the current BuildingRegulations. Examples of all suchillustrations are shown below.

Construction standards vary andso do product standards. Alwayscheck compliance and suitabilityprior to using a product.

Product type codes within each section are listed in alphabeticalorder. In some instances, products are then grouped by function.Example: Under W the Type W caviweep is then followed byother types of weep.

Cavibrick Sleeves

useThe cavibrick is a highperformance ventilator which maybe used instead of a conventionalair-brick.

introductionManufactured to brick dimensions, the cavibrick promotes a high airthroughput, via a front louvredgrille. The louvres are proportionedto maximise performance whilstcontouring the air to challengethrough-draughts. The louvres arealso spaced to comply with thelatest BS requirements but havebeen staggered to offer also aninsect resistant screen which isnot offered on some standardairbricks.

The cavibrick incorporates awater dam back to prevent rainpenetration and crossflow

separators. Moulded in a range of colours, the cavibrick may beused singularly, or in multiples. The cavibrick is fully compatiblewith our range of telescopic andstraight sleeves.

data• BS polypropylene, in terracotta,

slate, beige, brown, white andblack.

• Approx. size 220mm x 60mmx 70mm.

• Free airflow up to 7,500mm2

per cavibrick.• May be used singularly or

clipped together to create 150 x 225 and 225 x 225mmsized airbrick assemblies.

• Packed in boxes containing50no.

• Smaller quantities available.• Attachments available – see

useSleeve attachments to provideventilation to specific areas.

introductionA range of straight sleeves toaccommodate one, two or threecavibricks. (High throughputcavibricks are designed to beused singularly or can be lockedtogether to form larger brick-sizedventilating units.)

When connected to a cavibrickthe combined length is sufficientto accommodate all popularcavity wall widths. The threestandard straight sleeves are:75mm x 225mm, 150mm x225mm and 225mm x 225mm.

We recommend sleeves areprotected with a cavitray wherethey pass through the cavity, tocomply with NHBC/best practice.(See Sleeve and Duct Cavitrays.)

introductionWhere it is proposed to provideventilation to a remote room, under floor area or void, arectangular to round convertersleeve is available to permit theuse of standard 100mm nominalplastic soil pipe.

The cavibrick promotes excellentair throughput that can beconveyed using standard pipe if

so required. We recommendsleeves are protected with acavitray where they pass throughthe cavity, to comply withNHBC/best practice. (See Sleeve and Duct Cavitrays.)

usePreformed trays to protect sleevesand ducts where they pass througha cavity wall.

introductionWhere a straight or crankedsleeve/duct passes through acavity, measures should be takento ensure penetrating watercannot use the upper surface ofthe sleeve/duct as a means toreach the inside skin. Use of apreformed cavitray prevents waterbridging and promotes complianceof the Building Regulations.

The requirement to provide suchprotection is highlighted in thelatest British Standard 5628-3:2001, which specifically refers toducts and pipes. Recommended foruse with Type TAV, straight, andrectangular to round converters.

useProvides cranked air-duct routefrom cavibrick to area at differentlevel.

introductionThe Telescopic AdjustableVentilator extends or contractslike a telescope. It extends to amaximum of five brick courses. It is designed to accommodatethe high performance cavibrick,or may alternatively be used with a conventional air-brick. Airflowcan be directed to a specific areaof the structure, at a differentlevel. Where a greater variationis required beyond five courses,an intermediate sleeve isavailable to extend the range.

The Type TAV offers anunobstructed airflow route to

promote best practice. Anaccompanying DPC cavitray isalso available to order, to providedamp proofing integrity asdefined within the BuildingRegulations.

useTo extend Type TAV crankedsleeve to create a greater distancebetween inlet and outlet level.

introductionWhere airflow is required for aspecific area at lower level via acavity wall, a cranked sleeve isemployed with a cavibrick. The (cranked) Type TAVTelescopic Adjustable Ventilator is used for such purposes andprovides a five brick coursesmaximum difference betweeninlet and outlet levels.

Where a greater verticaldifference is necessary, an

extension sleeve is available.Vertical sleeves are available intwo standard lengths, with speciallengths available to order.

Sleeves can also be supplied toextend the Type TAV horizontally.Specify clearly if required socorrectly dimensioned section issupplied. See next entry if youwish to connect pipe to Type TAV.

data• Black polypropylene.• Lengths 300mm and 450mm.• Special lengths to order.• Packed in boxes containing

10no.• Smaller quantities available.

In instances where it is desirableto horizontally extend the lowerTAV aperture inwardly (toaccommodate an unusual innerskin dimension or feature), anappropriate horizontal 600mm

long extension sleeve is available. For distances exceeding 600mmhorizontally, we recommend useof a Type TAV to RoundConnector that permits use ofnominal 100mm plastic pipe.

Type CV

useTo provide airflow in and out ofroof space via the soffit board. Suitable for introduction intoexisting soffit boards to fulfilairflow requirements. Also suitable for new buildapplications.

introductionThe CSRV differs from thestandard CSV as it has a deepbody that protrudes up into thesoffit box. The airflow aperturesare positioned around the sides of the deep body ventilator ratherthan through the top. Thisarrangement results in a fargreater airflow rating perventilator. Thus a lesser number

are required to fulfil the statutoryairflow levels.

The Type CSRV can be used onmost pitches of roof (appropriatelyspaced) and self-secures whenpushed into a 70mm circular hole.Always ensure airflow via a soffitventilator can reach the parts ofthe roof intended.

data• BS polypropylene• Size 70/90 x 40• Colours: white, brown and

Type ECF

usePermits entry of air via eaves.

introductionThe eaves roll-out ventilator ismanufactured in PVCU. The crosscorrugations permit this product tobe supplied in long rolls which arethen uncoiled on site across thetrusses in the appropriate position.Nails are then used to secure theroll in position.

The result is an evenly spaced airroute along the eaves, providingventilation in accordance with theBuilding Regulation requirements.Type EROV is available in two sizes:

EROV300 is 300mm wide.EROV400 is 400mm wide.

data• Material PVCU, lightweight rigid.• Colour black.• Standard 6 metre rolls.• Free airflow 25,000 -

useTo provide ventilating infill whilstpreventing entry of birds undercontoured roof finishes.

introductionThe eaves comb filler ismanufactured from polypropylene

in one metre easy to handlelengths. The supple teeth of thecomb flex to accommodate thecontours of the tile or sheet. Such flexibility eliminates the needof purpose-made profiles to suiteach style of roof finish. Thus theECF suits a very wide range ofprofiles. When fixed to the top offascia, the ECF teeth slope forward,to splay and take up the gap whichwould otherwise be open.

useOne-Way (Maximum) is an aspiratingroofing underlay for non-ventilatedpitched roof systems. The ‘Maximum’suffix qualifies this is the heaviestaspirating underlay available. The performance is very similar toOne-Way (Heavy Duty), but thethermally bonded structure isthickened. One-Way (Maximum)provides the strongest possibleprotection and the highest possibleresistance against tearing and ripping.

introductionOne-Way (Maximum) is suitablefor use in all warm and cold-pitched roof applications. Moisturevapour generated within a propertycan safely ventilate through One-Way (Maximum). The aspiratingbenefit is capable of venting overfive times the moisture generatedwithin a typical house. Thus thisproduct can be used to satisfy theprotection, ventilation and vapouraspirating qualities demanded bythe Building Regulations andprovides an alternative to the use ofconventional ventilation productsand methods.

generalThis material has been tested tomeet/contribute to the

requirements of BuildingRegulations (England and Wales)2000, C4 , Regulation 7. BuildingStandards (Scotland) Regulations1990 , Regulation 10, B2.1, B2.2,G3.1. Building Regulations(Northern Ireland) B2 and C4.One-Way aspirating underlay mayalso be used as a supported orunsupported underlay in tiled andslated roofs constructed inaccordance with BS 5534. Hardedge Strip 1500

useProvides robust support andreinforcing of roofing felt at eaves.

introductionUnderlay felt should dischargewater into the eaves gutter. Thisrequirement is often flawed, andpooling of water is experiencedwithin the sagging felt area, situated behind the fascia board. The Hardedge anti-pooling stripaddresses this aspect.

The Hardedge anti-pooling strip isa rigid preformed polypropyleneprofile, which is positioned ateaves level prior to the laying ofthe roofing underlay felt. Itprovides support of the underlayfelt which is positioned and laid inthe conventional manner. The underlay felt is preventedfrom sagging betweenrafters/tilting fillets, thusaddressing the pooling problem.
