RECREATION IS FOR EVERYONE!!!The Accessible Recreation ActivitiesProgram (ARAP) has been providingrecreational activities for those withphysical and/or developmental disabili-ties for the past 20 years. Followingthrough with Redwood City’s ideals, ourprimary goal at ARAP is to enable indi-viduals to have meaningful, productive, and most importantly fun recreationalexperiences.ARAP participants range from age 14and up and are typically mildly inde-pendent. For all our participants,we offer an opportunity to work on physical, social and lifeskills in a fun, safe and comforting environment. We thriveto create an environment in which all can succeed. CurrentARAP programs include bi-monthly theatre trips, art, drama, and fitness classes along with a wide range of otherspecial events.

In addition to ARAP, Redwood City also offers anInclusion Program in which people with disabilities can

With today’s technology, the world is, indeed, asmall place. The Sandpiper Enrichment Programbrings multi-cultural experiences to children of

Belmont-Redwood Shores, without them having to board aplane. As part of the It’s a Small World Celebration, childrenand parents came together July 14 to celebrate Bastille Day,the National day of France.

All in attendance enjoyed the gracious hospitality of the HotelSofitel, from the beautiful location to the French pastries.Didier de La Ferrière, General Manager, was on hand to wel-come the guests. Another key sponsor, Paul Cotton, AssistantVice President, Bank of America, also joined in the festivities.

The children were exposed to the French language and Frenchphrases by instructor Nathalie Fabri. In addition to teachingFrench, Nathalie is also an artist and creator of the children’smagazine, Broccoli Blue (www.broccoliblue.com). DevenSledge, Academy Director and Executive Director from the

The children (and adults) had fun learning how tonavigate through a three course place setting (use silverwarefrom the outside to inside), the proper way for passing food (tothe right), and leaving the table (exiting on the left side of thechair). This event was organized by the SandpiperEnrichment Program whose mission is to provide multi-cul-tural experiences through art, language, martial arts and sci-ence. The new school site was recommended to the School Districtby a unanimous vote of the ten Redwood Shores residentsappointed to the New Shores School Advisory Committee bythe School Board. The Committee considered an originalslate of over 50 sites and spent many meetings listening topublic comments regarding sites. The Committee conductedextensive research and consideration regarding such factorsas accessibility, adequate size, impact on existing parks andopen space in Redwood Shores, and environmental and Statestandards for school construction.

“This is such exciting news and even more exciting to thinkwe are really going to make this dream of a new school areality in the near future,” stated Nellie Hungerford,Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations for theSchool District. “I cannot express how grateful I am for allthe hours of dedicated service the Committee has put forthon this project. It is such an honor to work with parents whoare so dedicated to the children of their community. I cele-brate your success and ongoing commitment to this wonderful project.” The new school in Redwood Shores will

alleviate the over-enrollment and overcrowding problemsfaced at Sandpiper Elementary School, the only school inRedwood Shores. Sandpiper was designed for 450 stu-dents but 620 children are registered for Sandpiper forthis Fall 2007. Due to the lack of capacity at Sandpiper, all 120 of Sandpiper’s registered kindergartners willattend kindergarten at Nesbit Elementary School inBelmont. The School District has also added a 960square foot portable to Sandpiper that will accommodate20 children. A recent enrollment study by the SchoolDistrict concluded that by 2016, there will be approxi-mately 800 school age children in Redwood Shores.

In November 2005, 68% of Redwood Shores votersissued a resounding mandate passing a $25 million bondmeasure to pay for the land acquisition and constructioncosts in the Redwood Shores area for the purpose ofbuilding a new school. The bond measure only needed55% voter approval to pass, demonstrating the commit-ment by the Shores community to neighborhood schoolsand quality education.
