License Management

Introduction Licenses may be purchased from PROCAD Software as standalone or concurrent. Standalone licenses, once activated, are only accessible by one machine. Concurrent licenses exist in a pool, and may be accessed across a company’s network from any computer. The maximum number of users that may work at the same time will be equal to the number of concurrent licenses in the pool.

The installation of the software, along with the type of license purchased, will define the manner in which licenses will be managed, and the procedures that are allowed.

For more information about installation, please refer to the Installation Guide.

Configuration Options There are many configuration options available for installation. Below is a chart with some of the most common configurations:

Workstation installation

Network server #2 installation

Network server #1 installation

Configuration 1 This configuration represents a truly standalone installation. The user has a standalone license and will not be sharing data with any other users.

This configuration should be used when the software is being evaluated and for a single-user environment.

Configuration 2 This configuration represents the situation where there are multiple users that need to share data, but have standalone licenses. In this scenario, the data files must first be installed onto a network location before the individual workstations have the applications and licenses installed.

This configuration is most often used for small companies that have chosen standalone licenses but must still share data.

Configuration 3 This configuration represents the situation where it is desired to have the data and the licenses on the same network server, and only the applications reside on the workstations. In this example, the data files and licenses need to be installed on the server before the applications are installed on the individual workstations.

This configuration is most often used for small or medium companies that have concurrent or networked licenses, and prefer to keep all of the 2D DESIGNER files on one server, or when only one network server is available.

Configuration 4 This configuration represents the situation where it is desired to have the data and the licenses installed on separate servers. In this example, the data files and licenses need to be installed on the servers before the applications are installed on the individual workstations.

This configuration is most often used for small through large companies that have concurrent or networked licenses, and have multiple servers available for selection. Commonly, one server has already been designated for licenses for other applications and a second server already contains data for the drafting department.

The four configurations above are the most common installation options encountered. However, it is possible to install the applications onto a network server as well, introducing a number of new configuration possibilities.

For all installation configurations, it is important to do the portions of the installations that you wish to have reside on any network server before the individual users’ installation is completed.

License Application Options There are three License Applications that may be installed, based on the configuration chosen during the installation.

Modes of Operation

Normal Mode This mode would typically be used when the license is located locally on the user’s computer.

Server Mode This mode allows sharing of floating license with other computers running in Client mode. Server Mode also provides the functionality of license transfers between servers across the network. Note that a ‘Server’ within the context of CrypKey operating modes, does not refer to a physical server on a network. It is actually a state of operation. An end user computer on a network can be switched to Server Mode, in order to serve licenses to other clients or to transfer licenses.

Client Mode A computer operating in this mode would be able to use a floating license that is being shared by a second machine operating as a Server.

Servers with licenses are listed on the left of the screen. All Servers are listed on the right of the screen, including those that do not have a license.

To transfer a license:

1. Select the source server on the left.

2. Select the target server on the right.

3. Select the number of licenses you want to transfer.

4. Click on the Transfer button.

The transfer process will take approximately fifteen seconds, but may vary. Once the transfer process is done, the server lists refresh and you will see the computer appear in the lefthand list (if it has received its license correctly). This shows this server now has available license (s).

Some notes about license transfers There are a few things to be aware of when transferring licenses:

a. The license transfers can be used to add licenses to, or remove licenses from, an existing pool of floating licenses.

b. You can transfer a license to a computer that does not have a license.

Page 25: 2D DESIGNER License Management User Guide€¦ ·  · 2011-06-152D DESIGNER License Management User Guide License Management Page ii Trademarks ... 27 Introduction ... View license

2D DESIGNER License Management User Guide Procedures

Page 25

c. You can transfer (add) a license to a computer that has a floating license.

d. You cannot transfer a license to a computer that has a fixed license. If you try this, the transfer will fail.

e. In order for a computer to appear on the ‘Servers with Available Licenses’ list, it must have at least one floating license available, and be running in server mode.

f. You can not transfer licenses that have different authorizations. So if one server has different options enabled than the machine you are transferring from, you can not transfer the license.

The license transfer is PERMANENT, and has no expiry. PROCAD is not responsible for tracking the transfer of licenses, and will still require proof of license uninstallation in order to reissue licenses or upgrade licenses.

Please contact [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Configuring Workstations with the CLC Wizard

Introduction The Client License Configuration (CLC) wizard is used to manage license configuration of a client on a network. This configuration tool is used to define where on the network the client application should look for a license.

The utility is installed in the application folder on the client machine and allows for the following procedures:

Specify on which domains to look for a license Specify on which machines to look for a license Enable a client application to look on the network for a license.

Configuration Procedure

1. The first step is to start ClientLicenseConfig.exe. Double-click on the icon located in the 2D DESIGNER V2008 folder.

2. After you’ve started the .exe, select the license file or existing configuration file from the browse screen. The configuration file will have the extension cec.ini. However, if the computer has the folder view options set to “hide known extensions”, then all you will see is the .cec extension.

Page 28

3. Select the .cec configuration file for your application.

4. Select Open. The Client Properites screen appears, on the License Domains tab.

5. In the License Domains tab, you can specify the domains to search. You can also control the order in which they will be searched by using the Up and Dn (down) buttons. Click these buttons to adjust the position of the domains in the search queue. The order of search is top to bottom in the list.

2D DESIGNER License Management User Guide Procedures

Page 29

6. In this example, the Primary domain (the domain where the client computer is located) is searched first; if no license is found in the Primary domain, CKTEST and REDATA are searched, in that order.

7. Instead of, or in addition to searching domains, you may choose to specify the servers (License Machines) to search on for a license. If you are going to directly specify the servers (License Machine) where the license is located, select NOT_APPLICABLE. In this case NOT_APPLICABLE would be the ONLY entry in the include list.

8. You can also exclude domains from the search as shown in Figure 3.

9. Now click on the License Machines tab. In the License Machines page you can specify which computers to search for a license. While this screen populates, you will see a message that says “Initializing Data”; shortly after you will see a list of machines appear. This is a list of all the computers on the network, so it may take a while to compile.

2D DESIGNER License Management User Guide Procedures

Page 30

10. You may choose to search ALL the computers.

Note: If you have selected NOT_APPLICABLE in the License Domains page (meaning the search isn’t filtered by domain), then the ‘ALL’ option is not available and you must add the individual computers to the Include list. If you have selected some domains to search, and choose ‘ALL’, then all the computers in the selected domains will be searched. As in the License Domains page, you can also control the search order for the computers in the Include list by rearranging the order using the Up and Dn buttons.

11. Now click on the Status tab. The Status page allows you to activate the Client License Configuration wizard to look for licenses on the network using the parameters you have defined.

12. Select Enabled and the client will be ready to look on the network for a license. Selecting Disabled allows the client to use a normal license, i.e a license installed on the local computer.
