2D Project PromptTRANSCRIPT
Intro to Visual Art & Culture Imatani 2D Project Create a 2-‐dimensional work inspired by the seminar content thus far. It can be in any medium or combination of media covered in class through Week 7, including silkscreening. No size requirements or restrictions, however, it should demonstrate labor consistent with at least 2 weeks of work time, including sketches and revisions. Thus far, we have covered several themes both in our reading of Practices of Looking as well as other assigned texts. Is there a particular concept that has stood out to you? Perplexed you? Inspired you? Agitated you? If it stays with you, this is often a good thing to try and tackle as a subject. It means that it has staying power and is worthy of trying to better understand through the process of making. Our goal is to visually translate our thoughts even if our understanding is incomplete. Getting started: Often times the most intriguing projects start with questions. For example, in the case of appropriation, we have studied how the topic is complicated when we think about honoring the subjects that are depicted in documentary photography such as was the case with the Sandinista rebel. Are there limits to appropriation? Is there a code of ethics of appropriation or image making that we should uphold? Are the standards different for artists or in the name of art than the popular media? When do we honor authorship or rights to an image and when do we not? Once we have determined the ideas that we want to try and tackle in our project, often the next step is determining what is the best medium or combination of media to use to help us communicate those ideas or tap into them. For example, in the case of appropriation again, how might an image be complicated by painting it versus making posters of it or reproducing free silkscreen prints? If you choose to start with a specific medium or technique as a jumping off point for your project, it will still need to investigate ideas posed by seminar content as evidenced either by the work itself, or through supplemental sketches, dialog with instructor, etc. Project is due: 10/28 (at the start of class)
