The CBI have asked senior offi-cials of Idea Cellular to explainthe companys acquisition ofSpice Telecom in 2008.The agencyquestioned Sanjeev Aga, CEO ofthe firm, in connection with the2G spectrum allocation scam. TheCBI also questioned the compa-nys CRO Pankaj Kumar.
Before the merger, both com-panies held 12 UAS licenses in sixcircles, said a senior CBI official.
In 2008, Idea Cellular picked up41.09% stake in Spice, he added.
In his report to the departmentof telecom the additional solicitorgeneral of India (ASGI), AmarjitSingh Chandhiok, said the Idea-Spice merger had violated themerger and acquisition norms. The deal had overlooked the lock-in period clause, which stipulatesthat a company cannot enter intoan agreement for merger beforethree years from the ef fective dateof being issued license.

In the second high profile assassi-nation over Pakistans controver-sial blasphemy law in less thantwo months, suspected PakistanTaliban members on Wednesdaygunned down Shahbaz Bhatti, the
federal minister in charge of mi-nority affairs. Salman Taseer, thegovernor of Punjab, was shot deadby his bodyguard in January foradvocating changes in the samelaw that impose the death penaltyfor opposing Islam.
Bhatti, the only Christian in thefederal cabinet, was aware of thethreat to his life.He had left a video-taped message with the BBCandAl-Jazeera TV station to be broad-cast in the event of his death. Bhat-ti said he was threatened by the Tal-iban and al Qaeda, but that thiswould not deter him from speakingfor oppressed and marginalisedpersecuted Christians and otherminorities in Pakistan.I will dieto defend their rights,he said.
The assassins left a letter claim-ing they represented the PakistanTaliban and they killed Bhatti be-cause he was leading a committeeset up with the objective to changethe blasphemy law. The law is partof the 1973 Constitution of Pak-
istan and is often exploited by fa-
natic Muslims to intimidate theminorities in Pakistan.
The attack took place around11.15am when Bhatti was on hisway to a cabinet meeting from hisIslamabad residence. Eyewitnessesand police sources said four men ina white Suzuki stopped his vehicle. Two of them opened fire with au-tomatic guns. Thirty bullets werefired, ten of which hit the target.
Local police sources said theminister had two police cars to es-cort him, but he refused to bringthem with him on Wednesday. In-dia has condemned Bhattis assas-sination. We condemn this das-tardly crime. Our prayers are withthe bereaved family and the peopleof Pakistan, the ministry of ex-ternal affairs said. (With AP inputs)
