ABOUT THE CITY

Split is the second largest city in Croatia, located on the Adriatic coast in the central Dalmatia, on the

Split peninsula. It is surrounded by mountains in the north and by a string of islands in the south

which, together with the beautiful blue sea, make a magnificent frame around Split. The city is

known for its climatic benefits (it has 2700 hours of sun a year), magical shades of the Marjan forest

in the west part of the peninsula, and miles of seaside walkways.

The Diocletian’s Palace (under UNESCO’s protection since 1979), situated in the city centre, dates

from the 4th century and it is a unique site worldwide. The citizens still treasure traditional customs,

leaving a pleasant and world-known feeling of welcome with their unique Mediterranean charm and

delicious autochthonous cuisine. Split, a city with almost 200.000 inhabitants, is one of the most

important tourist destinations in Croatia and a significant cultural centre.

The central point for downtown walks is a beautiful and famous waterfront called Riva.

Climate Split has a Mediterranean climate with hot, moderately dry summers and mild, wet winters (snow is

very rare). July is the hottest month, with an average high temperature around 30°C. January is the

coldest month, with an average low temperature around 5°C. During October average temperature is

above 20°C with about 197 mean monthly sunshine hours.

Currency The Croatian currency is kuna (HRK, local abbreviation is KN) and 1 euro is worth approximately 7.6

kunas. The currency can be exchanged in numerous change offices. The credit cards are widely

accepted. However, tickets for local public transport (city buses) in Split can be paid by cash only!

VENUE

The meeting will take place at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and

Naval Architecture - FESB Split). FESB building is a part of Split university campus and is located at

Ruđera Boškovića 32, Split. The joint WG meeting will take place in the large amphitheater A100,

HOW TO GET TO SPLIT

By car The fastest and easiest way to get to Split by car is by using the A1 highway, which is part of

international routes E65 and E71. You can also use D1 state road (no tolls, but slower). When you're

approaching Split on A1, look for the exit Dugopolje and follow the signs that will direct you to Split.

Note: There's a plenty of free parking space at the venue (FESB).

By plane Split Airport (Zračna luka Split, code: SPU) is located 25 kilometers northwest from City of Split. It is

connected to the Split main bus terminal (Autobusni kolodvor Split, situated in the city center), by

shuttle bus. Bus ticket fare is 30 HRK ≈ 4 € for one direction. The time table and other useful

information regarding shuttle transportation can be found at

http://www.plesoprijevoz.hr/ttable?vr=st.

The taxi fare Airport<->Split is approx. 250 HRK ≈ 30 €. Please be aware of COST reimbursement

restrictions concerning taxi transport!

By ferry Split ferry port is the largest passenger port in Croatia. Ferry lines connect Split with the rest of

Croatia like Dubrovnik, Rijeka and the islands, as well as with Italy: Ancona (daily) and Pescara. Split

ferry port is easily accessible by all kinds of transportation - both the train station and the main bus

terminal are located in the port area.

LOCAL TRANSPORT ROUTES (maps are given on the last page)

By local bus Bus tickets are sold by bus driver or in kiosks (located at major bus stops) and cost 11 HRK - cash only,

HRK only. Tickets are valid for 45 minutes and can be used in any city bus that circulates through the

city of Split.

OUTBOUND DIRECTION: DOWNTOWN → FESB

1. Use the bus no. 18 or no. 11, either from their first stop HNK, or from the second stop Tržnica

(outbound buses are on the west side of the street).

2. Both buses pass by FESB on Matice Hrvatske street. You should exit at the bus stop situated below

the pedestrian bridge (5th bus stop counting from Tržnica, or 6th stop counting from HNK). If in

doubt, ask for “Campus” or “FESB” (if asking locals, don't pronounce FESB as abbreviation, but as a

word).

COST EMF-MED Split, 2-3 October 2014

INBOUND DIRECTION: FESB → DOWNTOWN

1. From FESB walk back towards the pedestrian bridge, but before crossing it, turn right towards west

and find your way down to the bus road (Matice Hrvatske).

2. Walking along the sidewalk, you will find the bus stop 200 m to the west of the bridge.

3. Take the bus no. 18 or no. 11 and exit on Tržnica or HNK (you cannot miss HNK since this is the last

stop).

MAIN BUS TERMINAL (AIRPORT SHUTTLE) → FESB (and viceversa)

(e.g. if you are connecting directly from the airport to FESB, and viceversa)

1. You can walk from the main bus terminal (Autobusni kolodvor Split), in the northbound direction

about 450m to Tržnica, where you can take the bus no. 18 or no. 11 in the outbound direction (as

described before). Viceversa: coming from FESB by bus, exit at Tržnica and walk 450m to the main

bus terminal.

2. If you want to avoid this walking, you can take the bus no. 2, 9, 10 or 15 for just 1 stop from the

main bus terminal to Tržnica, but to catch this bus, you have to walk about 150m in the southbound

direction. Viceversa: coming from FESB by bus, exit at Tržnica, cross the street to the west side, there

take the bus no. 2, 9, 10 or 15 for just 1 stop, then walk back about 150m to the main bus terminal.

By taxi You can find taxis at several locations in the city center, e.g. at the main bus terminal. Taxi fare to

FESB should cost approximately 80-100 HRK. Please be aware of COST reimbursement restrictions

concerning taxi transport!

SOCIAL EVENTS

Welcome reception with catering/buffet dinner in the Cellars of the Diocletian's

Palace, including a short tour of the Cellars.

The Cellars (Podrumi) are located as a substructure below the Diocletian’s apartment in the southern

quarter of the Palace. By converting the palace into the city of Split, most of the residential complex

was demolished but the ground floor halls were perfectly preserved. In the early Middle Ages a part

of the complex was inhabited, and in one of the halls wine and oil were produced. Today the Cellars

are accessible through the Brass Gate of the Palace (from Riva), or through a staircase from the

Peristyle. The Western part of the basement has been preserved in its entirety and is almost

completely accessible for sightseeing. The Eastern part has collapsed during Middle Age but has been

excavated and a large part is also accessible.

Gathering point: west wing of the Cellars. Find the Cellars southern entrance situated on Riva (the

famous waterfront promenade). Enter from Riva, immediately turn left and enter to the west wing

through the large metal gate.

Tour of Diocletian Palace and Split city center

(approximate duration 1.5 - 2h)

Diocletian's Palace (Dioklecijanova Palača) is an ancient palace built by the Roman emperor

Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century. Today it forms the center of the city of Split. While it is

referred to as a "palace" because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the

term can be misleading as the structure is massive and more resembles a large fortress: whereof

about half was for Diocletian's personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison. Diocletian

built the massive palace in preparation for his retirement on 1 May 305 AD. It lies in a bay on the

south side of a short peninsula running out from the Dalmatian coast, four miles from Salona, the

capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia.

Gathering point: Trg Gaje Bulata square, in front of the Split National Theatre (the immediate vicinity

of the bus stop HNK).

Split City Museum – free entrance

The City Museum of Split (Muzej grada Splita) is located in the northeastern part of Diocletian's

palace, within the complex of medieval buildings at whose center is the Gothic palace of the Papalic

family designed and built by the native master Juraj of Dalmatia and his stonecarvers and builders

circle. The palace is beautifully executed and well preserved: courtyard with its richly decorated

portal, loggia, the first floor hall with its lavish four-light, two-light and one-light windows and with

the well preserved wooden ceiling. The Renaissance building with a fine window decoration

completes the ensemble of the courtyard. Inside, the permanent museum exhibition relates a

segment from the history of the city, the period when Split was an autonomous city commune (12th-

14th centuries).

The city statute, seal and coins and the Romanesque sculpture from the belfry of the cathedral stand

out among the exhibits. Within the period of Venetian rule (15th- 16th centuries), a central place is

given to the Marulic's literary circle. Mention should also be made of Libro d'Oro, Gothic-Renaissance

coffers. In the armoury are exhibited the weapons from the 15th to the 18th centuries, used for the

defence of Split.

Address: Papalićeva 1, Split
