Architecture and Fine Arts Library and Museum Complex of the Philippines: Integrating Sustainable Traditional Modern Design Building

Solutions for Dynamic Adequate Space

I. Introduction

A. Background of the Study:

Architecture is the reflection of one’s country. It’s culture, tradition and also its heritage.

Everything started from our “ninuno” or ancestral, they are the one who introduced us to

cave (architecture) and petroglyphs (fine arts). Until now Architecture and Fine Arts are

nourishing the culture and tradition of the Philippines. One of most known Architect said “I’ve

been designing Filipino because interpreting Filipino design is beautiful and can stand at par

with other world-class designs.” –Mañosa, this is what Philippine Architecture, not just able

to stand up but to stand out among world class designs. Filipinos are world renowned for

making great artworks that’s why many Filipino students want to take up Architecture and

Fine Arts for them to show their talent and also to recognize Philippine Architecture around

the world. But there are certain problems to that, most of reference for architecture and fine

arts are lacking like books and other reading materials that makes it harder to study. Also

there are insufficient guide and learning for the Philippine Architecture, how did it really

started, scale models of structures through periods, materials that were used within the

structure, and the evolution of technologies. Giving them a glance about the past,

experiencing it, and giving them more reliable sources will make them to know what

Philippine Architecture and Fine Arts is.

B. Statement of the Problem:

Filipinos are known for their naturally born artistry. They are born with talents and

intelligence that can compete and keep pace to other races. But can they still able do it if

they are adopting other races designs? There are different library in every city and one of

the largest is the National Library in Manila, there are architectural and fine arts references

but it’ll be much easier for students or artists to find references where they can both relax,

experience, study and move freely according to their interest. While having own museum for

Philippine architecture can let the artists and other people to experience and appreciate it

live. The combination of library and museum in the Philippines are can be counted by the

fingers in your hand, as I’ve researched it was only the Presidential Library & Museum and

Lopez Library & Museum. In both matters the problems were lack of references,

experiencing it live, good place to study, knowledge, and preserving the Philippine

Architecture and Fine Arts. Combining it one place will make it easier for artists and other

users to gather more information.

Page 2: 2nd Wave Proposals

The slogan for this proposed project is “BE PART of everything that you READ”

C. Justification of the Study:

Maybe having the National Library for architectural references and National

Museum for history are enough for minimal knowledge and maybe having library in

universities are enough for those students but how about those who are not studying,

those who are searching for more reference, or those who want to have their own

relax and private spaces. As I stated earlier universities have their own libraries for

references but state universities sometimes have lack of it and they can’t enter inside

private universities. This Architecture Library and Museum Complex will be for public

use. It will have commercial spaces like bookstore, souvenir shops, and food stalls.

There will be an open space where they can freely study, read or relax. This

proposed project will prioritize the needs of the users; it’ll accommodate large

number of books and also technologies that will certainly help the students,

professionals and visitors.

It’ll also have studios where the students and the professionals can practice their

talents and do their work freely, peaceful, and harmonious. There will be a connector

that will lead to the museum. The museum will present and preserve all the evolution

and kinds of architecture that happen in every period, it’ll be personally for

architecture and fine arts history only. The spaces of the museum will be the one to

do story-telling of the periods. The site will be at Quezon City along Diliman since it

was near and accessible to architecture and fine arts firms and also to the leading

architecture and fine arts universities. Many said that traditional and modern are

contrast with each other, but times of that many said that the hybrid of those two

designs will make sustainable and can last for a long time because of the flow of

structure through abstraction, distillation and geometries. This project will preserve

the traditional design of Philippine architecture with the mix of modern to keep pace

to the present time. With the accountability of this two kind of architecture will able to

design population which is projected over 20 years.

II. Significance of the Study:

The purpose of this study is to have a personal library and museum of

architecture and fine arts where the design projection will allow serving the future

needs of its population of users.

Objectives:

To establish a sustainable structure for efficient use of spaces for a

lifetime usage.

To serve as the main place for Architecture and Fine Arts references,

study and relaxation area and preservation of Philippine Architecture and

Fine Arts

To give more knowledge, enhance skills and experience of Philippine

Architecture and Fine Arts

Water Transportation Hub with Commercial strip in Honda Bay, Palawan: Application of Tropical Sustainable Climate Change Resilient Design

Building Solutions

I. Introduction

A. Background of the Study:

Palawan is an archipelago of 1,780 islands. It was located at the western part of

the Philippines. It is acknowledge as the “Last Ecological Frontier” and “Biospheric

Reserve” because of its rich natural resources, vast forests and deep blue sea with the

healthiest coral reefs that make tourists to always come back. From refined beaches to

marvelously pristine natural wonders to historical sites will able to give a once a lifetime

experience that makes the Philippines as a leading tourism destination in Asia. One of

the most known bays in Palawan is the Honda Bay. The bay is used for both commercial

and subsistence fisheries and recreation area. Honda bay is known for its island hopping

tour that causes for messy place of boats. Eventually because of the increasing

population there are possibilities that it’ll be a cruise ship destination. This study will

cover up how will it sustain the design population of water transports and users and what

are the systems and design solutions that can make the structure a climate change

resilient. It’ll be a tropically inclined design to commemorate the scenic of Palawan as

vacation refuge destination.

B. Statement of the Problem:

Palawan is an island province that is located in Region 4. Palawan is composed

of the long and narrow Palawan Island that is surrounded by smaller islands. It has rocky

coves, islets and clearly white sandy beaches. It has exotic wildlife, fishing villages and

UNESCO world heritages. Honda bay is comprised of several islets that makes it as the

destination for island hopping where all water transport can be seen everywhere which it

makes a messy parking place for boats. As time goes by many tourist are coming in the

Philippines which makes the economy of tourism to be higher than usual. It is said that

there are lack of commercialism and also least developed destination among other

islands of the Philippines. Tourists come here to experience the true adventure in nature,

to see and feel the marvelous wonders of Philippines. Palawan’s slogan is to make

human and nature to co-exist and have a balance and harmonious relationship. Having

this kind of environment and aim to develop and promote tourism, more tourists and

investments will prosper in Palawan. Palawan environmental has been surveying the

coastline of Palawan which has the potential of Cruise Ship destination. This Water

Transportation Hub will able to accommodate the fast rising population of tourists and

the design population of water transports. It’ll able to withstand and keep pace to

upcoming changes, not just environmentally but also climate changes.

Page 5: 2nd Wave Proposals

The building will reflect to its environment that will give the sense of place thus

the design will be tropically and strategically inclined by nature, sustainable and passive

and climate change resilience design solutions. It will showcase the world class

experience, uttermost quality service, and warm hospitable above personality.

The slogan for this project is “The adventure of your own last frontier”

C. Justification of the Study:

As stated earlier the main problem in Honda Bay, Palawan is that there are no

specific or certain place for the accommodation of water transports, the owners of the

water transports park anywhere they wanted to. This Water Transportation Hub will

accommodate and organize the parking of the boats and other water transportation. It’ll

be not just for accommodation of boats but also for the drivers, tourists, staffs, and for

commercialism. It’ll have shops and amenities that will be enjoyed by the patrons.

According to Palawan environmental they will have to designate a site development plan

for its future use to International Cruise Line Mandates. This project will able to

accommodate the future destination of cruise ship. It’ll also have observation decks and

exhibition hall. The structure will be using systems like sea-cooling systems which is

integrated to ensure the sustainability of the project. There will be also cabins for guests

and visitors. It’ll be not just for accommodation and commercial use but also it’ll the

symbolic centerpiece of Palawan. It’ll prioritize the marvelous beauty of coastlines and

its nautical heritage. . It’ll be environmentally, socially & economically sustainable.

Preserving the landscapes and seascapes will be one of the considerations. The

structures in the development will have design strategies and solutions that will able to

withstand through changes of the climate. Strategically the design solutions will be for

climate change for the comfort of the users.

II. Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to have a permanent place for the accommodation of

the users and to apply the design solutions and technology for a tropical sustainable and

climate change resilient structure.

Objectives:

To promote conservation of nature

To have a permanent and organize place or accommodation for water

transports and its users

To establish a tropical pioneer world-class design that will promote the

dazzling beauty of Palawan and Philippines

Seaport Development and Recreational Complex in Catanauan, Quezon: Integrating TREE (Tropical, Resilient, Environmental & Efficient)

Design Strategies & Solutions

I. Introduction

A. Background of the Study:

Catanauan, Quezon is a first class municipality in the province of Quezon.

According to its geography, it’s hilly, rolling and mountainous with isolated flat lands.

Also according to census 2010, it has a population of 65,705. Catanauan are rich for its

deep marvelous sea and green vast of rice fields. Most of the businesses and work of

the people there are about fishing. The bodies of water are their source of food and

money. One of the missions of the municipality is to implement projects and services

that will able to progress the livelihood of the community. But because of illegal dynamite

fishing, the seaport of Catanauan was destroyed. Seaport is a location on coast where

ships and other water transports docks. It’s also the place where the landing and

distributing of fish. Ports are more to commercial usage but it can be also a recreational

area. But since it was destroyed, as of now the sea wall is the one that they have been

using for water transports docking area and place for trading fishes. The water along the

sea wall has a strong current that as of now, the current of the water is keep on

destroying the sea walls’ structure. This study will able to help the community of

Catanauan, Quezon through developing a seaport that will able to accommodate their

needs and demands. It’ll draw to future progression of the municipality and it’ll be the

one to bespeak the rich character of Catanauan, Quezon.

B. Statement of the Problem

As stated earlier Catanauan Quezon had a seaport before but because of illegal

dynamite fishing it was destroyed and now only columns were can be seen. It was just a

fishing area and the home of “talaba” which are as big as “platito”. That’s the reason why

the people of Catanauan are using the seawall as the main place for transaction of

fishes and also the dock of the water transports. It might not be the best place for that

because of the strong current of the water and also the structure is not stable or

withstand for a lifetime. They don’t have recreational facilities or other amenities for

relaxation. And according to geography, Catanauan is adjacent to Marinduque which

leads to some water transportation from Catanauan to Marinduque or Marinduque to

Catanauan. These problems will be the cutting edge for developing a new seaport that

will able to help and accommodate the needs of the community. It’ll bring back the life

that they have used to be and will increase and improve their economy for the

betterment of the future.

Its “sense of place” will be the one that will reflect to the design of the

development. The Catanauan’s distinctive character will be the main design that will not

Page 8: 2nd Wave Proposals

just attract local tourists but also international. It’ll be tropically inclined and will be

accountable to sustainable design by considering other factors like climate, population

density and accessibility.

The slogan for this development is “The economic gateway of Catanauan,

Quezon”.

C. Justification of the Study

As stated earlier the main problem is they don’t have permanent and table

seaport so this project will develop a new seaport where it’ll accommodate both water

transports and fishing industry of the community. It’ll have safety and security features

where there’ll be a space for coastal guards and communication facilities for them. It’ll

have enough accommodation for the users where they’ll have comfortable and relaxing

ambiance. The commercial area will be segregated for it’ll not have conflict to the

activities and noises. It’ll have sustainable spaces for a lifetime usage and can shifts in

global shipping patterns, climate changes, changes in design and size of water

transports, and the projected users over the years. The seaport will have a civic center

where the users can use it as a recreational area and also for relaxation and waiting

area. The recreational complex will also commemorate and preserve the nature, history

and heritage of Catanauan, Quezon. The port will be balancing the environmental and

community benefits to ensure financial sustainability. The structure will allow the users to

engage the dynamic experiences like the weather of the day, the time, and season. Its

design will be tropically inclined, resilient, environmental and efficient for its lifetime

usage.

II. Significance of the Study:

The purpose of this study is to have a permanent sustainable seaport for the

accommodation of the users, water transportation and fishing industry of Catanauan.

Objectives:

To establish a TREE design that will withstand and a lifetime usage for the

community of Catanauan

To preserve and promote the culture, heritage, nature of Catanauan for future

demands to International tourists.

To have a permanent seaport for accommodation of fishing industry and

water transportation.
