MAXIMIZING SUSTAINABLEMASONRY SOLUTIONSWednesday, September 29, 2010Speaker: Scott Conwell, IMIMasonry materials are known for their beautyand performance values that often yield immediate and measurable results toward sustainability. This seminar will identify the specific contributions that masonry makes in the area of Sustainable Sites, Energy &Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, IndoorEnvironmental Quality and Innovation & Design which can address up to 52 points inLEED v3 (also known as LEED 2009) certifiedprojects. The program will also address the new requirements in LEED v3 and how they differ from those in LEED v2.2.

2009 IBCUPDATE: FIRE &SMOKEPROVISIONSFOR WALLSWednesday, October 27, 2010Speaker: William W. Stewart, Code Doctor Bill Stewart, our resident “code doctor”, takes a look at the fire and smoke provisions of the2009 International Building Code. Diagnoses toinclude key code changes to exterior walls, firewalls, fire barriers, shafts, fire partitions, andsmoke barriers and partitions. The doctor willalso prescribe how the code changes relate tomasonry wall design. Patients will be referreddirectly to the code so if you have a copy of the 2009 IBC bring it with you!

DIRECT DESIGN HANDBOOK BY EXAMPLE Wednesday, January 26, 2011 Speaker: Jason Thompson, NCMA The Direct Design Handbook for MasonryStructures has now been published by TheMasonry Society. This tabular design method, based on the strength design procedures of TMS 402-08, streamlines the design, specifica-tion and detailing process for masonry struc-tures. Using the handbook, Jason Thompson will completely design a one story reinforcedconcrete masonry building during the seminar.

SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH RENOVATION Wednesday, March 30, 2011Speaker: Andrew Raimist, Raimist Design What could be more “sustainable” than a masonry building experiencing two or three different uses during its lifetime? Join AndrewRaimist for a survey of local projects whereeven utilitarian existing masonry buildingshave been turned into unique contemporaryspaces through the thoughtful use of space, structure, natural light and ventilation.

Very green indeed! The discussion will high-light how well current sustainability conceptsdid or did not work for each project.

TMS 402/602: 2008 AND BEYONDWednesday, April 27, 2011Speaker: J. Gregg Borchelt, BIAWhen a local jurisdiction adopts the 2009International Building Code, the required documents for designing and specifying structural and veneer masonry will becomethe 2008 TMS 402 and 602 (formerly ACI 530

and 530.1). Join Gregg Borchelt for an overview of the key code changes from the previously referenced TMS 402/602-05 and a look ahead at some of the important additions and revisions coming in the 2011 version.

Ittner, FAIA (1864-1936).Son of a St. Louis bricklayer, Ittner is creditedwith the design of approximately 500 schoolsnationwide and is considered by some as the mostinfluential man in school architecture in theUnited States. Many of his design trends, such as the extensive use of natural lighting, still ringtrue today. Join Carolyn Green, in conjunctionwith the current firm of Wm B. STRUCTURAL MASONRY “20 QUESTIONS”Wednesday, September 22, 2010Speaker: John Harris, CASCOStructural engineers design masonry walls tocomply with the requirements of the buildingcode for life safety and “structural” service-ability. However, the design of single wytheconcrete masonry walls is influenced by many non-structural considerations such asmovement joints, thermal performance, costefficiency, constructability, etc. Join John Harris for a lively round of “20 Questions”exploring these important design considera-tions. Audience participation expected!

STRUCTURAL MASONRY DESIGNSOFTWARE VERSION 5.0Wednesday, October 20, 2010Speaker: Darrell McMillian, MISLVersion 5.0 of this handy design tool, originallydeveloped by the National Concrete MasonryAssociation, is now available. The latest versionupdates the software to the 2009 IBC and 2008TMS 402/602. Join Darrell McMillian for anoverview of the software exploring its capabili-ties and uses.

HYBRID MASONRY Wednesday, November 10, 2010Speaker: David Biggs, Biggs Consulting Join David Biggs for a discussion of how reinforced concrete masonry infill can beused as a primary structural element in framed buildings to create a hybrid masonry system

which eliminates conflicts with framed bracing, makes the frame more economical, and provides structural redundancy to resistprogressive collapse. David will also highlightstructural software currently available to assist with hybrid masonry design.

ASTM C 1586 QUALITYASSURANCE OF MORTARSWednesday, March 23, 2011Speaker: Darrell McMillian, MISLMortar is an important part of a reinforced concrete masonry wall, but does it warrant the intense quality assurance focus it oftenreceives? How can the engineer know if themasonry mortar is adequate? Is compressiontesting of fresh field mortar samples a good indicator? Join Darrell McMillian for an overview of ASTM C 1586 which was written to give guidance on properly specifying and evaluating masonry mortars.
