2. BEHAVIOURChildren and young people are influenced by the people they come into contact with on a regular basis and they often seek attention from those around them. If they only attract attention when their behaviour is negative, then that is what will be reinforced and repeated. It is therefore vital that children and young people receive attention, praise and encouragement when they demonstrate positive behaviour patterns, which in turn will be reinforced.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
It is an integral part of your role as an early years worker to be promoting positive behaviour patterns. You will need to show that you have a clear understanding of how you can support and contribute to positive behaviour in children and young people.
Task 1
List the policies and procedures of your setting relating to behaviour and provide a short account of how they contribute to promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour.

EVIDENCE GATHERING
In this activity you will identify an area of your work that will capture evidence of your own role in promoting positive behaviour. Your assessor will help you to identify suitable items of evidence.
You need to gather evidence of activity within areas of your work to demonstrate:
a) That you can apply agreed strategies for dealing with inappropriate behaviour.
Suggested evidence may include:
• witness statements• diary entries • observation records.

PROFESSIONAL DISCUSSION
Your assessor will conduct a professional discussion with you, which will capture evidence necessary to prove your level of knowledge and understanding of supporting positive behaviour.
Below are some topic areas you will need to consider when preparing for the professional discussion with your assessor.
• The importance of being consistent and fair.• How to deal with children who think they have been treated
unfairly.• How policies and procedures help support staff in dealing with
behavioural issues.
Your assessor will plan the content of your professional discussion and will advise you to help you to prepare beforehand. The professional discussion may cover more than this section of your Assessment Workbook.
Discussion process
The discussion process will offer you the opportunity to show how you have a consistent and fair approach to managing behaviour in line with the setting’s policies and procedures.
To prepare for your professional discussion, you should think about the following.
• Why settings have policies and procedures linked to behaviour.• How you can ensure that children do not feel unfairly treated.• Who you might refer worrying or severe behavioural issues to.• Why it is important to ensure all children are supported,
especially when another child’s behaviour has an impact on them.
