April 3, 2016 Second Sunday of Easter—Sunday of Divine Mercy

As Thomas believed because he saw the risen Jesus, so too were many brought to faith through the various signs and wonders wrought by the apostles.

They proclaimed as Lord “the one rejected by the builders”, “the First and the Last of the One who lives”.

THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION

Monday April 4, 2016

The feast of the Annunciation, now recog-nized as a solemnity, was first celebrated in the fourth or fifth century. Its central focus is the Incar-nation: God has become one of us. It is a celebration of the actual Incarnation of Jesus Christ. From all eternity God had decided that the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity should become human. Now, as Luke 1:26-38 tells us, the decision is being realized. Mary has an important role to play in God’s plan. Imagine yourself in Mary’s place, asked to say “yes” to a divine plan so vast, so profound and so seemingly impossible that you cannot compre-hend it. “How can this be?’ she asks, bewildered. She is rooted in the faith of her ancestors, and yet now an angel has appeared in the midst of everyday life extending a startling invitation. “You have found favor with God,” the angel says, “and you will conceive and bear His Son.” It is Mary above all others who can teach us what it means to live by faith, and how to respond when God’s providence disrupts the daily course of our lives, overturning its rhythms and expectations. Despite her fears and uncertainty over how this promise could be fulfilled, she still answered : “Yes” .

Her response changed the world forever!

The God-Man embraces all humanity, indeed all creation, to bring it to God in one great act of love. Because human beings have rejected God, Je-sus will accept a life of suffering and an agonizing death:

“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

ABOUT THIS SPECIAL SUNDAY …..

From the diary of a young Polish nun, a special devotion began spreading throughout the world in the 1930s. The message is nothing new, but is a reminder of what the Church has always taught through scripture and tradition:

that God is merciful and forgiving and that we, too, must show mercy and forgiveness.

But in the Divine Mercy devotion, the mes-sage takes on a powerful new focus, calling people to a deeper understanding that God’s love is unlimited and available to everyone — especially the greatest sinners. The message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the writings of St. Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedi-ence to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God’s mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun to spread.

Why is there a Sunday designated as Divine Mercy?

On the Second Sunday of Easter in the Jubilee Year 2000, at the Mass for the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska, Pope John Paul II proclaimed to the world that “from now on through-out the Church this Sunday will be called Divine Mercy Sunday”. Pope John Paul had actively promoted the message of St. Faustina and also developed a scriptur-al and doctrinal basis for our faith in the mercy of God.

By linking the revealed truth about God’s mercy to one of the most solemn Sundays after Easter itself, he illumined the fact that the liturgy already proclaimed the divine mercy. For centuries in liturgy the Church has proclaimed the mercy of God through the Word of God and the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ.

The message of mercy is that God loves us — all of us —no matter how great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy.

It is a message we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC.

A — Ask for His Mercy. B — Be merciful. C— Completely trust in Jesus.

April 3, 2016 Second Sunday of Easter—Sunday of Divine Mercy Sunday Scripture Reflections

Reading 1 Acts 5:12-16

During the Easter season, the first reading each Sunday is taken from the Acts of the Apostles. This book of the New Testament is like no other. It gives us a beautiful description of the early Church community as it grew. Filled with the Spirit of the risen Christ, the disciples brought the healing love of Jesus to those in need. In doing this, they carried on his mission. Just like the early Church, we are called to carry on the mission of Jesus. We can do this only when we grow in the knowledge and experience of the risen Christ in our lives. Reading 2 Revelations 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19 Today's reading sounds a little different, doesn't it? It is filled with special symbols that were used to bring hope to the early Christians during a time of per-secution. When we hear the words of the reading, we are filled with the hope of Easter, too. Jesus tells us, "Do not be afraid." Christ has conquered death. He is truly "the one who lives" forever. Gospel John 20:19-31 John's account of that first Easter night is filled with drama. Jesus appears through locked doors and gives his disciples his peace. He gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit and communicates God's power of forgiveness. Thomas, who misses out on this experience of Jesus, refuses to believe unless he can touch Jesus' wounds. A week later he has a chance to do just that! Thomas exclaims, "My Lord and my God!" And Jesus tells us how "blest" are we who have believed in his resurrection without having seen his risen body.

Domingo Escritura Reflexions
