7

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability gives consideration to three primary principles: Social, Environmental, and Economic

The intersection is know as the “Triple Bottom Line”

Page 8: 3 final focus on the future tom tracy

8

What is Sustainability?

Satisfy social and economic needs, both present and future, and the responsible use of natural resources, all while maintaining or improving the well-being of the environment.

Page 9: 3 final focus on the future tom tracy

9

A project which satisfies the needed movement of people and goods while reducing negative impacts to the community, environment and natural resources.

Or, going one step further

A project which satisfies the needed movement of people and goods while IMPROVING the community and RESTORING the environment and natural resources.

What is a Sustainable Transportation Project?

Page 10: 3 final focus on the future tom tracy

10

What is a Sustainable Transportation Project?

It’s NOT Just Streetcars, Brick Crosswalks and Street Furnishings!

Sustainability is Measurable!

Page 11: 3 final focus on the future tom tracy

11

Sustainability is measured through rating or certification systems

Rating systems have been developed at the national, state and local levels

The rating systems have been developed by academia, government and private entities

The rating systems provide very good guidance about what to DO to incorporate sustainable concepts

For FHWA, a sustainable approach to highways considers:

– Access (not just mobility)– Movement of people and goods (not just

vehicles)– Provision of transportation choices, such as safe

and comfortable routes for walking, bicycling, and transit

The Rating Systems - INVEST

Page 15: 3 final focus on the future tom tracy

15

For FHWA, a sustainable approach to highways considers:

– Efficient use of funding– Incentives for construction quality– Regional air quality and climate change– Environmental management systems, among

other considerations

The Rating Systems – Greenroads®

Visit: www.greenroads.org

The Greenroads® Rating System challenges Project Teams to go above and beyond minimum environmental, social and economic practices with an independent, third-party review.

It is administered by the 501c3 nonprofit organization, Greenroads International.
