This makes FMS a premier institute which not only con- nects students to the real world of opportuni- ties, but also a place for self knowledge and self enhancement. This is manifested in terms of a new ‘practicum’-oriented peda- gogy placing students with mar- quee companies. Ninety per cent of its faculty are teaching abroad (and at IIMs). The institute has the best research records nation- ally and 40% of its students are getting international exposure in the course of their education at IMT, including internships. The institute has been featured in every major ranking.IMT was ranked third in Outlook India's ranking of private B-Schools, the Economic Times ranked IMT seventh overall and fifth as per the perception of cor- porates in 2011; IMT was also awarded the highest-possible A*** (a triple-star) rating by CRISIL. IMT Ghaziabad has consistently been in the most-respected Top 10 rankings in In- dia for several years now. With its entry into the CNBC Top 10 in 2013, IMT breaks into yet another prestigious ranking. IMT was ranked ninth by Business India and Businessworld respectively in 2012. Earlier this year, Dr Bibek Banerjee, Director of IMT Ghaziabad, received the AIMS International Oustanding B-School Director of the Year Award from the Director of IIM Bangalore. Speaking about the award, Dr Banerjee said, “Globalisation, technology and the environmen- tal crisis are combining to pose unprecedented and complex chal- lenges to our society. They are also throwing up incredible opportu- nities. But as Albert Einstein said, ‘The same knowledge that creat- ed our present-day problems can- not be expected to show ways of solving them’.We have to step out of all boxes. This explains IMT’s reinvention agenda: to be ready for the future before it appears-if possible, to help shape it rather than being surprised when it drops in.” A PhD from Purdue and Pro- fessor of Marketing at the IIM Ahmedabad prior to his appointment at IMT Ghaziabad, Dr Banerjee’s mantra for building a future- ready B-School is in- vesting in top-class faculty, undertaking incisive research and adopting contempo- rary teaching meth- ods. He has also pi- loted strategic inter- national collaborations and part- nerships for IMT with GEM France for its prestigious Doctor- ate in Business Administration (DBA) degree, a specialised MBA on Service Management with ISS Hamburg, and another with Kellogg in the area of Rural Busi- ness Innovation. The institute guided by its Director has launched a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program jointly with Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM), France, a global leader in man- agement education. “This first-of- its-kind degree program in India will give the executive talent in In- dia an opportunity to leverage their rich and deep experience at work to obtain a globally- renowned doctoral degree with- out having to leave their jobs in In- dia,” says Dr Banerjee. The IMT- GEM joint DBA is one of the six such programs in the world to be accredited by AMBA (Association of MBAs). The DBA is a unique research- based, issue-driven qualification offered across India and France and focuses on the broad areas of management of technology, or- ganisational design and innova- tion, mixing academic rigour and relevant business practices. This three-year program is structured to facilitate part-time study so that students can combine ongoing ca- reers with their doctoral research, incorporate the same in their man- agerial practice and attain the highest possible level of business qualification. This program is divided into two stages wherein the first stage stu- dents learn research methodolo- gy and data analysis techniques whereas the second consists pri- marily of individual research, un- der the supervision of a fully-qual- ified professor with broad range of expertise and international rep- utation in technology, innovation and change management. GLOBALISATION, TECHNOLOGY AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS ARE COMBINING TO POSE UNPRECEDENTED AND COMPLEX CHALLENGES TO OUR SOCIETY >> DR BIBEK BANERJEE, DIRECTOR OF IMT GHAZIABAD W hile compiling the Top 50 B-School Survey 2013, the key challenge was to differentiate the rankings published by The Times Group versus the rankings published elsewhere. It was agreed upon to include key stakeholders in the survey for it to be broad-based and reflect the opinions of the different stake- holder segments. Primarily, the Top 50 B-School Survey involved two components: Perceptual and Fact-based surveys. REFINING THE NUMBER GAME Perceptual Survey: A structured ques- tionnaire was administered in face-to-face interviews or over the emails to four key stakeholder segments: current attendees, MBA aspirants, alumni and recruiters. All in all, a target of 2,161 respondents was achieved across eight cities: Delhi, Lucknow, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Patna, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The respondents were asked to rate the B-Schools based on seven parameters: quality of students, quality of faculty, qual- ity of academic inputs (method of teach- ing, number of lecture hours per subject in a term, total number of credits/ papers needed to be cleared to get the degree, total number of dropouts per batch), qual- ity of physical infrastructure (hostel accommodation, laptops/PCs for students, books/online catalogues in the library, Wireless Internet facility, subscription to foreign journals/online databases, extra- curricular facilities), value placed by the market on a student, international initia- tives and engagement initiatives (man- agement development programs conduct- ed, alumni meets undertaken across cities, number of books and articles in journals published by permanent faculty in an academic year, industry conferences/ seminars organised, total revenue gener- ated from consultancy assignments/ incubation cells/ projects undertaken). The information collected highlighted the importance of the seven parameters using a 100-point chip sum game. Further, it provided the ranking of the respondent’s top 10 B-Schools on each of the seven parameters (for example: Rank 1 for the top B-School and Rank 10 for the 10 th B-School). Significantly,to avoid the possibility of a biased opinion, a respondent’s alma-mater was excluded from the rankings in the case of attendees, alumni and recruiters. The Perceptual Survey Rankings include only those B-Schools from which at least two batch- es have passed out (institutes that are operational since 2008 or earlier). This alsoserves to iron out specific issuesthat might arise from the studentcomposition by training studentsin foreign languages and aidingtheir communication through lan-guage training offered through theLanguage Laboratory to give themgreater confidence.

A unique step undertaken has

been the autonomous campus-basede-empowered MBA (eMBA) coursethat MET launched in the late ’90s,bringing together the e-commerceand management streams in an at-tempt to ensure corporate success. Moreover, being ahead of its time, the course has saved the industrythe efforts of training students inthe area of e-business that has beengradually but definitely replacingtraditional working systems. Inkeeping with the times, MET hasadded the digital marketing streamsto make the course more viable toindustry requirements.

Another need of the industry thatMET has fulfilled is in the sunrisesectors of banking and insurance.Given the need for trained profes-sionals to replace general employ-ees that were earlier absorbed bythe insurance industry, MET offersstudents specific training in the ar-eas of core banking and insurance,to serve the increasing need of adeveloping country for informedprofessionals in this area. TRUE GRIT: MET MBAMET LEAGUE OF COLLEGES: MENTORING SHARP PROFESSIONALSAND ENTREPRENEURS FOR CORPORATE LEADERSHIP SINCE 1989

Today’s economic condi-tions globally have put in-dustries on a cautiouspath. CEOs all over the

globe are feeling increasingly chal-lenged by the complexities of theenvironment as they find their or-ganisations ill-equipped to copewith situations that are new, volatile and uncertain. Hence, companies are wary about the wayforward. The leaders of tomorrowwill have to possess innovativemindsets that look beyond the ob-vious, creative ‘out-of-the-box’ideas and a fire in the belly to turnthem into sustainable solutionsfor the benefit of the society, theorganisation and the individual.

Welingkar’s lead in reinventingmanagement education by offer-ing an AICTE approved two-yearfull-time PGDM-Business Designprogram, with ‘Design Thinking’and ‘Innovation’ at its core, wasdriven by the need to place ourgraduates in a commanding posi-tion in the contemporary corpo-rate world.

‘Design thinking’ is now a com-mon thread that runs through eachof Welingkar's AICTE approvedtwo-year full-time PGDM programslike e-Biz, Business Design, Fam-ily-Managed Business, Retail,Healthcare, and the recently in-troduced Rural Management asthis promises to be an effective toolon managing today's as well as to-morrow’s complexities. A designthinker sees constraints not as lim-itations but as opportunities forcreating unique solutions by vi-sualising unseen objects that meetreal world needs. Design thinkingis optimistic, constructive, and ex-periential and is targeted directlyto the end user's facility, benefitand delight. It is a 180-degree in-version of the top down approach.

This approach has been mani-fested in the programs and peda-gogy at Welingkar.

Reaching the bottom of thepyramid – the program way

Renowned Management Guru, the late Dr. C. K. Prahalad proph-esied that fortune lies at the bot-tom of the pyramid. As the out-reach of education, rising incomelevels and subsequent aspirationlevels enabled by advancement inI&CT develops the rural sector asa viable vibrant market, the dearthof business managers who under-stand the pulse of the rural sectorand can provide insights about thisemerging market to the companieshas emerged as a yawning gap. This has created a big demand inthe corporate sector for human re-source that specialise in this area.Banks, telecom, insurance, FMCG,micro-credit and IT companies, struggle to find managers welltrained managers in the areas offinance, marketing, operations, lo-gistics, IT, human resource and in-novation, who will understand andempathise with the rural settingsin India's vast hinterland.

This opportunity prompted Wel-ingkar to launch its AICTE ap-proved two-year full-time PGDMcourses on Rural Management(Emerging Economy) offeringthe students not only the latest syl-labus in core management, butalso on innovation and opportu-nity creation in the emerging mar-kets. The program prepares thestudent to work in any industrysector of their choice with pre-mium knowledge about the ruralsector, facilitated by on-field ruralprojects and research experiencethrough rural internship.

The newly initiated PGDMHealthcare Management pro-gram is yet another programbased on the same philosophy.

The course in Healthcare Man-agement is designed to meet theever-increasing demand in thegrowing economy of India. A man-agement graduate who studies

only general functional areas suchas marketing, production, financewill need to develop an apprecia-tion of the healthcare domain tocontribute meaningfully to thissector. Similarly, a health scienceprofessional lacks knowledge andapplication of management prin-ciples. The healthcare sector is get-ting more and more organised andhas created a need for a large num-ber of trained professionals in thisburgeoning service industry.

This course can be adapted byfreshers, supervisors, junior-lev-el executives and middle levelmanagers, as well as medical doc-tors, nursing home/ diagnosticcenter owners, who wish tostrengthen their managementskills and application in peoplemanagement, finance, operation, communication and other areasin the healthcare sector.

UNIQUE OUTCOMES NEED NEWPEDAGOGY:

Welingkar's cutting-edge peda-gogy and content delivery mecha-nism have given birth to uniqueconcepts like ‘Integrative Manag-er’ wherein multi-disciplinary con-cepts are taught through teamteaching to nurture ‘T-shaped’ pro-fessionals of the future who havethe depth of domain knowledgeand the width of overall perspec-tive and sensitivity to the organi-sation and community. Under theGlobal Citizen Leadership Programstudents work on real-life issuesrelated to rural, healthcare, inno-vation, social issues, HR, urban is-sues, infrastructure, process andsystems & IT and energy, amongothers. The program is being de-livered by Leadership beyondBoundaries, a global initiative bythe Centre for Creative Leadership'(CCL), a premier educational in-stitution in the world focused ex-clusively on democratizing lead-ership development.

This and more is what theWeSchool environment is about.

We welcome you to explore theWorld of Welingkar (WOW) and toparticipate in the selection processfor 2013-15, all you need to do is fillout a Common application formwhich allows you to apply to allthe nine PGDM programs acrossour campuses at Mumbai and Ben-galuru.

ABOUT OUR UNIQUE PROFILEBASED SELECTION PROCESS

Welingkar's profile-based selec-tion process assigns significantvalue to previous academic per-formance, extracurricular activi-ties, application form essay ques-tions, work experience, GDPI, cre-ativity test and psychometric testalong with written test percentiles. This facilitates an aspirant's ad-mission to Welingkar's prestigioustwo-year full-time PGDM courses. These are a wide range of new, fu-ture-ready careers that make aswitch from the conventional pack-age-dominated choices to flexibleoptions that contribute to overallquality of life.

we make you tomorrow-ready today

Management education has be-come mired in mundane plati-tudes. This has reduced the capa-

bility of business school graduates to un-derstand and appreciate the concerns ofthe society at large and lessened efficacyof enterprises that employ these gradu-ates, to address the broader societal is-sues. It is critical to infuse oxygen into B-Schools to change this situation. For-mer Chairman of the University GrantsCommission (UGC), Dr Arun Nigavekar, has recently emphasised the need to shun the old curriculum in management

education and prepare CEOs by directingthem to set goals and develop the neces-sary skills to pursue them. Many havepointed out that B-Schools are not ade-quately sensitive to the problems andchallenges of the society at large, whichhas a direct bearing on goal setting.

The Design approach could helpreach and transform the lives of‘more people’

Design thinking, a tried-and-tested in-strument, is laterally and holistically in-novative in its approach and equips themanager to overcome these hurdles andmove closer to the solution. The distinc-tive traits of Design Thinking are that itdemands inquiry into accepted notions,multi-sensory perception, cross domainapplication and prototyping.

This can be illustrated with the help oflive examples. Ronak Gandhi, 2010-12 atWelingkar Institute of Management De-velopment and Research(WeSchool) ,brought home laurels from the Global So-cial Entrepreneurship Competition(GSEC) held at Seattle, USA. A global

social venture competition for interdisci-plinary innovations with commercial via-bility, aimed at reducing poverty in devel-oping countries. Ronak shared her ideasfor 'Srujna,' a project to create sustainablelivelihood for marginalised sections ofthe society. A pilot project was successful-ly undertaken for imparting vocationaltraining in jewellery-making to a group of30 women who were rescued victims ofhuman trafficking. Their team emergedvictorious among applicants from 49countries and also received recognitionfrom the prestigious Indian organisations

like IIM C, NSDC, CII, among others.Similarly, another example is Breson

Wind Turbines, an entrepreneurial initia-tive by Bhupesh Sharma, was nominatedfor TATA FIRST DOT, a nationwide con-test of start-ups, conducted by the Nation-al Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). Bre-son has been making quite a dent in windpower generation within the urban spaceby offering a solution that allows low-costpower generation within the congested en-virons of urban and suburban areas, witha sustainable design that remains produc-tive even when the wind speed is low. TheBreson model represents not only what weneed here and now, but also, what keepsour tomorrow clean, safe and healthy.

Both these examples are about the abili-ty to work on innovative ideas that makean impact of a large number of people atthe Bottom of the Pyramid or a margin-alised population. This approach has thepotential to design the future and B-School students with this skill can ex-pect to play a significant role in thisprocess.

Just a month ago, in January 2013,Amit reported for his first day ofwork at the Indian head office of aglobal electronics giant. Nervous,

hesitant and worried whether he couldhandle the challenges of what lay ahead,Amit quietly took his place in the plush,well-furnished training room, alongsidefour other new recruits, waiting for the in-duction session to start.

The silent tension in the room was pal-pable as they waited. Suddenly, the doorwhooshed open, and a familiar face en-tered the room, immediately bringing a bitof relief to the nervous group. “Hey guys, your reporting manager will be coming ina few minutes…don’t worry, okay! I am go-ing to be right by your side for the next sixmonths!” said Prof. Dutta to his group ofstudents. “Guys, this is a terrific opportu-nity, and I’ve mapped out your job profiles

together with your manager, and its goingto be a real learning experience for you!”

And so began Amit’s ‘iConnect Core’six-month internship experience, as part ofthe ITM PGDM iConnect 2012 program. Inboardrooms and training rooms across In-dia, over 700 ITM PGDM iConnect studentshave begun their six-month internship atcompanies such as Volkswagen, Godrej,Aditya Birla Group, Taj Hotels, Pidilite andmore. In fact, over 20 Pre-Placement Offers(PPOs) have already been made just 30days into the internship.

“These are no ordinary internships,”says Dr. P.V. Ramana, Chairperson of theITM Group of Institutions. “These are notlike your typical two-month summer in-ternships, these are not part-time jobs;each internship company is carefully se-lected, the work profiles are clearly definedto include specific learning outcomes, re-search objectives and real ‘get-your-hands-dirty’ work experiences.”

More importantly, a faculty guide is em-bedded right alongside the student in theinternship. The faculty guide visits the in-ternship company on a monthly schedule, spends quality time with the intern andhis manager, to teach and guide the internright where he is working, and to ensurethe job requirements and expectations ofthe company are being satisfied. “It’s likehaving a batting coach by my side, givingme advice on my form and posture, how toplay shots I’ve never attempted,” beamsAmit, who in just two months has madehis first quarterly-sales forecast report andpresented it to his team – something hehad never done before!

The PGDM iConnect Core internship isthe center-piece of the radically different, totally redesigned PGDM program at allITM Business School campuses. “When wesay ‘Radically different’, we really mean it!We have completely redesigned the PGDMprogram, literally from the first sessionright up to convocation. We’ve left nothinguntouched in developing the most uniquepost-graduate business program any B-school offers in India, and perhaps in theworld,” says Nitin Putcha, VP –Operationsat ITM.

The ITM PGDM iConnect program cameout of a pressing need to respond to thefeedback that the industry has given usabout their expectations of business grad-uates. While the ITM PGDM program hasbeen well accepted by employers for over20 years, the requirements of businesshave changed dramatically in the last fiveyears.

The worlds of business and technologyhave converged, and the complexity andvolatility of the business environment de-mands that aspiring managers be able toproduce results on Day-one. Employershave told us, “There is no more time formanagement trainee programs, no moretime to give a fresh MBA graduate thespace to learn the ropes of thebusiness…we need Day-One Productivity! Can you deliver that?”

This realisation sparked off a profounddiscussion within ITM. “We needed to lookat the implication of this environmentalshift and its effect on how we teach andcoach aspiring managers. To ensure thatour response to the industry would be a

serious, game-changing effort,I personally assembled and leda high-level research teamover 14 months. We conductedextensive ‘open-ended’ discussions withover a 100 CEOs and business heads acrossIndia. We wanted to tap into their thoughtsand critical ideas in an unfiltered, un-prompted manner,” says Dr. P.V. Ramana,Chairperson of ITM Group.

The crucial discoveries made were infour areas: Day-One Productivity, Attitudi-

nal Change, Real-world work-skills and in-depth functional knowledge. The researchteam then went into ideation-mode, tocome up with a model of business educa-tion that could really, seriously addressthese four areas. The result of this ideationis the ITM PGDM iConnect program, launched in June 2012.

WHAT IS ICONNECT?

The ITM PGDM iConnect program hasbeen redesigned to deliver updated, streamlined industry-relevant curriculum,in an interactive and activity focusedmethod. Doing away with the usual two-month summer internship, the ITM PGDMfeatures a six-month internship, whichwill provide immersive industry experi-ence, with continuous on-site faculty sup-port, employer feedback and tangible skilldevelopment. In addition, the program fea-tures a concurrent NGO project.

Realising that students from differentbackgrounds and development levels cometogether at ITM, and need different typesof training and support in non-academicareas, the iConnect program features a

two-year 'Insight Sessions' track which de-livers continuous interventions in profes-sional and personal growth. “The InsightSessions focus on building the essentialwork-skills of the students all through thetwo years, making them immensely em-ployable and confident of their capabili-ties,” says Prof. RSS Mani, VP–Institution-al Development.

In addition, throughout the two-yearprogram, students are prepared for theirfuture employment through a set of inten-sive ‘Career Management Sessions’, whichfocus on getting ready for the all-importantplacement process. “Most B-Schools justmanage to squeeze in some last-minute ‘in-terview skills’ and resume writing work-shops before placement season. We re-alised that this was just not enough, andthat this is a major development require-ment for our students,” says Dr. P.V.Ramana.

iConnect is the term that is coined forthis never-before at-tempted idea, of reallyconnecting the individ-ual, industry and the in-stitute in a way that en-hances the experiencefor all stakeholders.

ITM Group offers theAICTE-approved ITMPGDM iConnect pro-gram at its campuses inBengaluru, Chennai,Mumbai, Navi Mumbai,Warangal and Hyder-abad. The ITM PGDMiConnect 2013-15 will of-fer specialisations inMarketing and DigitalMedia, HRM, Finance, SCM and Logistics,Information Technology and Pharma Man-agement, with the choice of specialisationsvarying by campus.

ITM-Global Leadership Centre is a ‘B-School for specialists’ that offers spe-cialised PGDM iConnect programs in International Business, Human Resourcesand Retail Management, at the campusesin Navi Mumbai and Chennai. ITM-Insti-

tute of Financial Markets offers India’sfirst and most respected specialisedPGDM: Financial Markets program, at theNavi Mumbai campus.

Its newest specialisation program, Digi-tal Media Marketing, is the hottest newfield for marketers in India, and ITM hasworked closely with industry leaders andmarketing gurus to develop a full-scalePGDM program that will produce fully-trained digital marketing professionals, with in-depth knowledge of social media, digital and mobile marketing and onlinemedia strategy. With the iConnect Coredigital media internship, and training byexperts from the industry, this programcan be a career defining experience for stu-dents.

ITM PGDM programs enjoy a 100%placement track record at all its campuses, with many alumni reaching top levels oftheir professions in their respective indus-tries in a very short period of time. “Many

of our alumni have pro-gressed very rapidly in theircareers, with some of theyounger alumni reaching lev-els of Vice-President and Di-rector in as short a period asseven years,” says an elatedDr. Ramana.

Over the last two decades,ITM has launched the careersof thousands of business pro-fessionals in India and theworld over. With seven highlyranked B-schools in opera-tion over two decades, theITM Group of Institutions istruly an industry leader inmanagement education.

B-school trends come and go,but one innovative trend thathas gained a foothold in the

MBA field is the creation of special-ized MBA/PGDM programs. The choice between a specialisedMBA/PGDM or a mainstream pro-gram depends a lot on the speciali-sations offered and the track recordof the B-school. Also important isthe extent of industry-linkage- aspecialised program that just offersmore courses and topics in the fieldis just doing lip-service to the con-cept.
